Fact of the matter, is that SFIV is a big fucking deal. They've been hyping it up for a while now. I don't know about you guys, but I'd be mad as hell if someone leaked it and then everyone reposted it. Yeah, would've come out in a few days, but it's still leaked, and it's taken a little bit away from the megaton that it was going to be for 1UP and EGM. You guys are saying they're picking on the little blog, but they're well within their rights. And it's not like Kotaku or Joystiq or anyone else helped by blowing up the leak.

about talking to Ziff Davis to get the "full story"? This guy did not get
the information from an "anonymous source." He's a freelancer for EGM Brazil
who finally admitted to them that he did not have a source, but rather,
stole the information from our servers (we have IP logs for this). He used
his working relationship with EGM Brazil, stole a password, and took
information from our story and posted it up before we could.

If one of Kotaku's freelancers stole a password to steal a scoop, would that
be cool? I'd be OK with it if, indeed, he had a source that leaked the
information (I stood up for Kotaku for that very act in last year's Sony
debacle). But that's not what's happened. What he did was just outright
illegal, irresponsible, and is not what journalists are supposed to do.

It's clear that this was probably going to be a big exclusive for EGM that took months to plan and that was probably going to push many issues and even subscriptions but this act put that in jeopardy. I feel for this guy but at the same time Ziff has to enforce this otherwise these legal means of protecting ones information are moot.

I seriously cannot understand how people see this as anything similar to CNet's recent fiasco. They're nothing alike but this article clearly taking the "little guy's" side seems to be painting it in that manner. I just find the idea that everyone should be free to do what they want while establishments have to answer to the law a bit like anarchy and that's why I alluded to it as such. I'm adult enough to realize that I am responsible for my own action and should be prepared for the consequences of those actions when they are spelled clearly (since unlike most legal issues, embargoes are pretty clear with I.P.). Other adults should be held to the same standards and that's how things work.

No worries, I'm not angry. I don't think though that you should paint everyone in your opinion because clearly there mixed impressions of this development. Sentiments expressed on this board are a minor cross section. Laws that protect I.P. would not be here unless people believed in them. Exactly! He made no agreement about showing/not showing the pictures. So he was well within his rights to show them. Where the problem is is the guy who leaked them...HE mostly likely DOES have an NDA with Ziff Davis, and broke the agreement by sending the pics to a third party.

Also, when was the last time you saw Kotaku do a 12 page spread on a guy like Ralph Baer? EGM did it, though. That's what print media's good at. Blogs are good at, well, being blogs. They bring timely info, but not much depth. (No offense, Kotaku eds, it's just the nature of the beast.)

Sites like 1Up and IGN and Gamespot are more like a print mag, but they're still pretty sloppy because they're all trying to outdo each other on speed, and they really don't have any compelling feature stories either. It's all just news, reviews and previews. (1Up does occasionally have some good stuff, and Gamespot used to.)

Not to mention, yes, you can read a magazine while sitting on the bowl, or riding the subway. Someday we'll all have e-readers that'll download the latest 1Up updates every morning, but that's still probably 10 years away.

Yes, there will come a time when print is well and truly dead, but we ain't there yet.

As for this story, let me second the "boo!" on Ziff Davis.

I think it's disgusting that they are doing this. It's not like the government can go after the Washington Post after they posted information leaked to them via Deepthroat, so this company shouldn't be able to go after he leaked information to them about the Watergate scandal.

And the information isn't stolen like they claim, rather it was GIVEN to him. You can't blame the press for posting information they have when they have signed nothing stating they won't be posting it.

Frankly I hope EGM sales ARE hurt. Not because he posted the screens, but because they are trying to throw their weight around and control the free press.

Seriously, it's about tim,e pelple realize that if they didnt make any fuss, people would be in doubt, thus not considering it to be 100% true. When they pull this sort of action, its is obvisouly 100 legit, and even if they take it down... who cares? I have them on my games blog as well! Im doint more good then bad to Capcom!
