Tho it wasn't people that were fired, but the 1up show, has done some sort of tribute to Luke and John after they left.

Keep in mind, it wasn't a person who actually worked with Jeff that fired him. It was a cnet suit, so that's probably why this "tribute" was able to be made, otherwise it would be pretty uncomfortable around the workplace.

You know, it's kind of stunning to see the reaction to this post... during the initial "Gerstmanngate" reaction I felt pretty good about the outpouring - who wouldn't be upset to see integrity compromised and a reviewer fired for doing his job? I assumed that was what this was actually about. But from some of the comments here, it seems like some people just like to sling mud at GameSpot. Real mature, guys.

I've followed Gamespot since it was first build until days after Jeff is gone. They are not just "employees" per se. These guys have formed a very strong bond like a family. Not being able to see and work with Jeff after 11 years of being together is like having a huge vacuum in their life.

What people don't understand is that kind of job (soley based on a website journalism) really did not exist 15 years ago when these guys met...

So fast forward to today these guys made it through many video game system ups and downs the dot com crash and even online multimedia technology.

From conversations from some dudes in '97 at say at Arby's about the PS1 and the new things happening on the this new internet to wow we got these cool game based e-journalism jobs at C|NET to today having your job send you to Japan to cover the 2007 Tokyo Game show.

Had to be one helluva ride-a gaming geeks dream come true.

10 years is a Looooong lifetime in internet journalism and game reporting at the same place especially loooong.

Sometimes you have to make hard decisions (look at the one Crecente made this year from Rocky)and sometimes they are made for you. I was a genuine titled Webmaster(remember when they used to use that title) for a local TV station and when the web bubble burst in 2001 I was out.

I am still in this field but it is not what is was (it's better)and I have been blessed to find a much better situation and also discovered that staying there with my friends albeit safe would have held back my potential.

However this VideoWake was done from a purely emotional point of view. Just to make themselves feel better.

I just listened to the head of 1UP as a guest on crankygeeks.com podcast show drop his name and comment on this situation.

Jeff is a "Rockstar" now if he can back up his current popularity with verifiable talent he will land on his feet.

I wish I would have had the opportunity this guy has when things went dark for me.

After hearing the interesting rant by "gamespot" earlier and then it being confirmed by one of the staff makes me think that as long as John Larson is heading gamespot, advertiser's input will always apply pressure on gamespot and its staff.

If you haven't seen the "gamespot" post on valleywag you should, its not CNET's fault, its not Gamespot's editorial fault, it's John Larson fault.

His idea of "synergery" between advertising and editioral teams flashes in the face of journalistic integrity and clearly that idea needs to go.

There's nothing "heartless" about not thinking a guy losing his job is worth some sort of online "tribute". Thousands of other people lose their jobs every day. Where are their tributes? (And why should they all deserve them?)

It would be heartless if the guy really had died and we were all saying this. But he didn't. He's sitting at home right now drinking a beer and playing some games while he lives off his severance. He's a well known guy in the industry; somebody will hire him. He's got nothing to worry about. There's nothing worthy of a tribute here.

I think the guys at GameSpot are nearly in tears because of the situation with fan's response to this whole thing. They feel like their credibility is going down the tubes, and who can blame them. It does suck to see "GameSpot sucks!" written a 100,000 times in forums on the web, you know, when you work for GameSpot. So I'd say that their emotional response is even more so related to the toilet of credibility GameSpot finds itself in right now, more so than as a response to the treatment of their co-worker Jeff.

I think this tribute would be fit better if Gerstmann had left the company on his own rather than being fired and locked out of the building. I'm sure the guys in the video all feel genuine but those who seem to be doing damage control probably forced the tribute to be made to begin with.
