@bluecell: Sweet thanks for posting that! Although seeing those prices converted to Canadian makes me not very excited anymore. Almost $10 to rent a new release high-def? I'm sure that's more expensive than the U.S version and because of the exchange rate that is just ridiculous. So we get it late and pay more (assuming I'm right about the price, I cant find the U.S prices). No thanks MS. The new divx player and aXXo will work just fine.

Actually I'm going to go back on my earlier comment about price as I didn't realize UK-folk were paying 4.50 -> 6.75e for a rental from Blockbuster in HD or regular SD. It's about 5.50e in Ireland for HD / SD so the only real competition is the subscription services.
It's difficult to tell from this vantage point whether the service will consume the minds of earth men or merely enslave them. One thing is for certain: there is no stopping it; the marketplace will soon be here. And I for one welcome our new rental overlords and would like to remind them that as a trusted kotakuite I can be useful in rounding up others to toil in their underground points caves.

@NunianVonFuch: Not everyone has a rental store near them plus there's the hassle of travelling to the store, having to return the next day and no guarantee that the movie I want will even be there. There are things where having the physical product is better value, but when that physical product is only mine for a short period of time during which it's my responsibility to move it between locations then the virtual product is much better suited for the purpose.

@Rectangle: Yeah, but it's going to be a long time getting to the point where you can watch it uninterrupted. I've spent most of the day trying to get Psychonauts and I doubt I'll have any decent amount of time with it before tomorrow. When it comes to movies, I imagine I'll be sticking to quicker SD downloads.

And if you went with the rental, you probably wouldn't get it in HD, either. If you only want a standard def DVD, go with the standard def movie download for cheaper.

You can start watching a movie while you are still downloading it. Once you get to a certain point in the download, you are ok to watch the whole thing without interruption.

I second that sad emoticon. And from the looks of it they think they already have launched it in Canada. This was in the press release:
"With this launch, Xbox LIVE Marketplace becomes the first video on demand service to be available in six countries - US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France and Germany."

Last I checked we are still being shafted.

@StupidDufus: @FanDam: You can easily get the convenience for less with Amazon's 3.99 a month deal or Screenclick's 7.99e for us Irish folk. Both of them post the dvds to you for free and you just pop it in the post to return.
My point is you're paying extra for getting it direct to your Xbox rather than less even though there's no store employees to pay or middlemen at all.

@NunianVonFuch: That, to me, is more convenient. No need to drive/walk to the store to get it and return it, more of a chance that the disc is not scratched/unplayable, etc. Mind you, this is for rentals, not purchases. I still want physical media when I buy stuff.
