I was in my apartment building's elevator and I saw that the married couple next to me had just bought Wii Fit, which I didn't know was out yet. I asked them how much it was, and they told me it was 5200NT, which is about $160 USD. Seeing that $80 is retail, daaaammmmnnnn. Also just checked Play-Asia, and it's the same(high) price there.

I think this will probably sell well even though it's niche. I would imagine it seems like an extension of Wii Sports for the fitness stuff and adding the casual/lifestyle aspect to games.

Nintendo's totally going apeshit with the genre bending lately too, has anybody noticed? Brain trainer, vision trainer, face trainer, Wii Fit, and I know there's something else I'm missing too.

Oddly enough, I was browsing through the nakano stores late this afternoon and the wiifit was widely available. Had I even had the tiniest desire to get the wiifit, I would have had no issue at all obtaining one. Point is, while I think it probably sold great, here in one of the most crowded wards of tokyo it was readily available. So either they produced a lot, or.....its not selling nearly as well as people think.

People who make those bids on Yahoo Auctions are plain lazy. When I was out shopping today I stopped by a Tsutaya and they had a ton of Wii Fit still waiting to be sold. People need to look beyond the traditional gaming outlets to get their fix before turning to overpriced auctions.

They dropped several months ago to somewhere around 20k, and now have been steadily rising approaching the launch of WiiFit. Granted, some of that might have to do with SMG, but regardless, sales have been on the increase for almost two months now... CHECK YOUR FACTS PLEASE! Last time they were this high was late August/early September.

As has already been said, Yodobashi Camera sells a lot more than just cameras. They (and Bic Camera) are two of the biggest electronics chains in Japan. Games, appliances, stereos, TVs, computers, luggage, toys and yes, even cameras, can all be bought there.

I live in Japan and have access not only to the Wii Fit, but also to the Wii which is in constant supply at any video game shop I go to. I don't have a Wii and have zero interest in the Wii fit. My whole apartment is the size of my living room back home in Chicago. I don't have room to use this thing.
Anyway, I think it'll do well with the endless hordes of women here who have Wiis and are constantly on "daieto" (diet) despite being thin. 'Cute' rules in Japan and exercising with a Wii is...cute.

I'll guess around 70K for the first week. After that it will depend on whether or not it's any good. Given Nintendo's track record, I'll assume it's at least pretty good, so it should sell steadily for a long, long time.

A new era in gaming though? ^^; It's just an extension of the "training" games that have done so well on the DS. Hardly revolutionary, but if the product is actually fun and/or useful, it will sell.

I don't track the housewife market that well, but I bet it'll be a flop from the standpoint people think it'll do well. Expect slow sales unless all those homemaking CMs payout. It's just another gimmick -- but Nintendo thrives on gimmicks. Also I say the Wii tanks in 2008 as the gimmick doesn't hold up in the 'sit-down' console market as well as portables.

@Heliophage: You would probably be expected to kneel on the board for that, which would conveniently place my eyes back in the viewable range for my reap projection TV.
Here's a question: Does the board plug into a wiimote, or does it talk directly to the Wii? Because Bluetooth has a 7 object limit, right? So 4-player anything that uses both the wiimote and the balance board wouldn't work in the latter case.

I really don't know what to think when it comes to Wii Fit.

It seems to me that a part the problem is trying to get other developers to make software for it. Another thing is that this is a pretty expensive peripheral and it seems like most of Nintendo's gaming peripherals turn out to good, but only used for one thing and that's it and then it just fades out of existence.

I think it would perhaps be a cool idea for developers to make Wii Fit games as Wii ware titles so that development will be inexpensive, the cost will be affordable and players have immediate access to downloading and playing them unless of course memory storage space is a problem.

@keiichimorisato: Rumble Pack did pretty well for Nintendo in the N64 days, but you didn't need it for anything. If people make games that can be played without the board but are better with it, it stands a better chance as a standalone. If they never decide to sell it standalone, there probably won't be many games that use it, but it won't need there to be.

Hmm, part of the success of the Wii is due to the relative low-cost of the console. WiiFit is $80 and isn't even a game, so we're in unknown territory. It will be interesting to see if 3rd parties give any support for the controller for actual games.

Look. Wii sales have not exactly been on fire lately; that's a fact. And it's not like people don't know this game is coming out. As the game has approached, Wii sales have continued dropping from the 80-100k/week range to the 50k/week range. That doesn't show a whole lot of enthusiasm for Nintendo's upcoming titles.

Dragon Quest IV will continue to be the #1 game next week.

My guess it is it will sell about the same as Mario Paint did for the SNES. I had the game, and it went for $70-ish if I recall. Its a very similar concept and target audience in my mind, coming with a mouse and hard pad. I have NO idea what the actual sales numbers were on Paint, but I wager it was pretty good considering the popularity of the SNES at the time.

I kinda thought about picking this up today (shops open in about an hour or so), but it just seems too limited. Yourself Fitness for PS2 (and PC) strikes me as a much better option for using a gaming system to lose weight.

YF gets you moving around much more and burning a lot of calories. A few adjustments to my eating habits and YF 6 days a week (30-minute workouts) got me to drop 10 kilos (22 pounds) in 67 days. I don't think Wii Fit can deliver those kinds of results.

(All that said, I'm sure it'll sell heaps. Yodobashi Camera already has it listed with the "sorry, we don't have any more" icon on their site.)

I think marketing is key here. If it is advertised as a game, it might do okay. If it is marketed as a way to get fit or stay healthy, it might pull in people that don't buy games normally. Then it could be huge.

I can't really see it catching on much. probably around 50k at most. I don't think most casuals would see it as a must buy.

I bet 100 KP that it'll do better than Galaxy's first week, unfortunately.

I facepalmed harder at E3 for Wii Fit than I did for Genji 2. The worst thing about it is that I know it'll do well, regardless of every feeling in my body that this is the first of many 'gimmicks' that bring my Wii fears to light.

I suppose that's the price we pay for other people having different opinions from me. I blame you all.

@Torgen: At the time, it was also one of only two games worth buying on the Wii. Now that there are 5 games worth buying on the Wii, Wii Fit has some major competition.

That's a pretty good point even if you don't count obesity - I'm skinny as a pole too, but also about 25 cm taller and 20 Kg heavier than the average Japanese male. You'd hope they would take a pretty good range of weights into account, but every time I try to fit into some sort of vehicle, I'm reminded how design is definitely biased towards averages. ;P

I'd say with the Wii base it's going to sell pretty well. The question is, is it any good? And like others said, it kind of fits into Japan to try games like this, but if it's popular there chances are it will be popular everywhere.

@DigitalHero: Remember that in Japan Wii Sports wasn't a pack-in and the Wii wasn't any cheaper than the foreign versions that came with it included. It sold 2M+ there as a standalone game.
