Several factors are probably responsible for this:
1. The prices are now on par with the 360, so now people don't feel quite as gouged.
2. There are more good exclusives on the console now than just Resistance, as well as quite a few good non-exclusives.
3. Halo 3 released months ago. Last year, Gears of War rode in and made most people realize that the 360 simply had a better library.
4. The most important part of all is maybe that everyone who wanted a PS3 got one when it released two weeks prior to Black Friday last year, and then everyone stopped buying when they realized it was a STUPID FUCKING DECISION.
At the time.

To summarize: Last year they dealt with lack of demand, lack of good games, boatloads of bad press, new insanity by the week from Kaz and Kutaragi, developers crying foul about Sony not supporting their efforts, the expense of Blu-Ray, and the 360 having pretty much everything the PS3 wished it had. This year, they don't have anything like that holding them back.
The fact that the sales increase was ONLY 245% is what worries me. No actual solid numbers while presenting a percentage?
Do you think some kid can get 20% on a math quiz, then get 50% on the next quiz and get away with telling his dad "it was a 250% increase over my last grade!"
It's still a fucking "F". An increase like that in comparison to last year mustn't be that impressive, or else they'd give us numbers. I hate PR spins.

Wrong. The Wii, graphically, is not more powerful than the Xbox. The Xbox has a higher polygonal count that the Wii, and is also capable of HD visuals (720p), while the Wii calls it a day at SD (480p). Interestingly enough, 480p is the same resolution as the PSP.

And I didn't forget that the 360 has been out for 2 years. MS was planning on launching the 360 around the same time as the PS3. It is just that Sony ended up being a year late. Great news for Microsoft since they basically have a 1 year sales lead on the PS3, and their console is still selling better than the PS3.

In fact, there hasn't been a single month when the PS3 has sold more units than the 360.

You are mixing shipped and sold numbers and you are including November for the PS3, but excluding it for the 360. You're worse at manipulating statistics than Sony is, and that's saying a lot.

MS had not sold 10M consoles by December '06.

Up to this point (November 06 to November 07, including the PS3 launch), Sony has sold 6.1M consoles to the entire world.

From November last year to November this year, MS sold 6.4M consoles.

And to date, the 360 has sold over 13M consoles. Essentially, that is more than double the PS3's base, and the 360 has out-sold the PS3 consistently for the year that the PS3 has been out.

Okay, so if that were true (which it is not) then the graphical equivalent to the Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive if you prefer) could be released tomorrow, and you could say it's a "next-gen" console.

This was started by the PlayStation (which played audio CDs and some video CDs), and has been progressing ever since.

I'm not suggesting that the Wii should be able to playback Blu-Ray discs or HD-DVDs, but Nintendo intentionally omitted any means of DVD playback on the Wii, a feature that would have been little to no cost to the manufacturer and easily implemented. More than a few developers have declared that they refuse to produce games for the Wii because they do not consider it a "next-gen" console. These are developers saying this, not consumers.

Of course, the Wii does have a truly "next-gen" (read: gimmicky) control scheme, and it also plays GameCube games, which are also "next-gen" games by your logic. It also displays multi-color video and stereo sound, both features that would be considered "next-gen" by the elderly people.

My question is two fold:

1. When connecting HDMI to the DVI port in an HDCP compliant monitor, does the adapter also need to be HDCP compliant? I am using a Dell 2407WFP-HC.

2. DVI and HDMI are essentially the same apart from the HDCP DRM and audio hookups. When running the PS3 over HDMI into DVI, will I also be able to use the composite cables for audio out?

B/C can easily be achieved via the 80 GB which is only 100.00 more. The 40GB can get b/c via software emulation just like the new 80GB models no matter how Sony or anyone else try to spin it. It's just a matter of when they will decide to add it. The additional hardware isn't necessary to achieve it. Fanboys and scared Microsoft execs would like you to believe otherwise.

Good news! It's great to hear that Sony is doing well.

I saw a ton of PS3's being sold at Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Gamestop and J&R computer world this weekend.

I happily directed someone to the pyramid of 40GB ps3's hidden ummmmm....stacked where it was difficult to readily find. I also asked the Best Buy manager to put more Spiderman Trilogy Blu Ray packs on display because it took and employee 10 mins to get me one from the back.

I gotta tell you it just seemed deliberate and a bit too coincidental that the 40gb PS3 and the Spiderman Blu Ray Trilogy were so hard to find.

I REALLY do care about BC though. The Only ps3 exclusive game that really interests me is MGS4 (and perhaps folklore which looks kinda cool) and as we all know that is not released yet. I have decided to wait and see, since we don't know when MGS4 will be released and perhaps the price of the console will drop before then, or who knows, perhaps BC will be added back into some new SKU. That all being said, BC IS important to me, because I already have a PS2, Xbox 360, and Wii connected to my TV. That takes up a fair amount of space, and the PS2 still gets regular use. Without PS3 BC I will be forced to have 4 systems around my TV which I would not have enough connections to leave them all connected to. It begins to border on ridiculous.

My GF is still playing through PoP:The Two thrones, Max Payne 2:The Fall of Max Payne, Thrillville (which she really enjoys), MGS3: Snake Eater and Psychonauts (which I recently found and purchased). Myself, I'm still playing through GOW:2 and frequently like to revisit my Favorite games for the system (MGS, MGS2, MGS3, Max Payne 1 + 2, and many more). I could feasibly use and enjoy my PS2 for at least another year. That is why BC is important to me. The unavailable 60gb model of PS3, unreliability of BC on the 80 gig, and lack of current titles that catch my interest are all reasons I will not purchase a PS3.

Until MG4 is out I'm holding off on the purchase.

In all honesty, I'm so happy to finally have Super Mario for the Wii and all those other games on the 360 that this holiday season is gonna be great anyhow. If I get a PS3 for next year, I'll hopefully be really well set up next year too.

There are still issues with the PS3 that most consumers don't know. Sony shows great demonstrations in the stores, on $3000.00 1080p Sony HDTV's. They claim support for HDMI 1.3, but few affordable HDTV's support it. They still allow games to be released that doesn't support 1080i, including two of their flagship titles, Resistance and Motorstorm. And, by this time at least, it should be obvious to even the most diehard Sony fanboy that they did NOT have a hardware scaler in the PS3 "that can be turned on with a simple firmware change", as all of the frustrated early adopters were told by Sony's customer service.

If the PS3 is anything like the 360, one has a hard time justfying buying a $60.00 game that has totally indecipherable text on an STD or ETD TV

Wal-mart uses a dynamic stockroom system which orders new items once they are barcode scanned at the register. The truth is that the Xbox360 did not manage to get many converts from last gen, it will not do much better next year, and the PS2 owners are just about ready to take the jump.
Tell me; if you have been on the Sony camp for two generations and dig their exclusive franchises (GT,MGS,R&C,J & D, Killzone) what is your most likely purchase?

The PS2 had just too many good games still for people to jump so early, I believe none of the big Sony franchises will be coming to the PS2 next year so people will be making the move much faster.
Lets see how it looks by July next year, my prediction: Wii #1, PS3 #2 and Xbox360 #3.

It's already selling as much as 360 worldwide or even better depending on which numbers you use ( total region sales ). That's even with so-so sales in the US still. I don't think it'll take long for it to surpass the 360 once the 'big four' titles come in 2008. After all the 360 has so many hardware issues on top of Microsoft ditching so many exclusives to buy some DLC for GTA4. I think SONY getting exclusive new IP from Rockstar and other houses was a better investment by far.

I don't think we're being that insensitive to this good news. Yes it is great that the PS3 is doing better, I don't think anyone here wants to see another video game system disappear like the DC did, but I think we also need to be realistic. It is good that the PS3 is dong better, but take it with a grain of salt for 3 reasons:

1. It's that time of year where all the consoles will see increases in sales.

2. They recently had a price cut which will only increase sales temporarily.

& 3. It will take much more than a 300% increase in sales for them to catch up to their competitors.

Sony is less clear. Everyone knows they were losing a screwload of cash on every one in the beginning, but their technology is newer and thus, its price drops has been dropping much more sharply. They were *probably* still losing money before the cuts, and god knows how much more they're losing after all the cuts.

Seriously, that is very good news for Sony because in addition to the sales spikes everyone experiences this time of year (which is usually close to those numbers), and the fact that they can only improve from last month's figures, it's safe to say that some of this increase is due to the price drop, a nice pair of quality first party games launched, and a descent media campaign. I think we can expect a resurgence in the Playstation brand. One that will give owners and potential buyers the confidence they need to continue to support the platform.

All the issues reported about Firmware 2.0 and similar drama is played out in the niche press and hopefully will not distract consumers for taking the plunge (I wish the 360 the same good fortune) and hopefully when the smoke clears, we will see a stronger games industry even if the rest of retail fail to meet their projections.

I'll need to buy at LEAST 4 games for Sony to turn a profit on me. Since I'm the type of consumer who only spends $60 on something I know I'm going to enjoy. As far as I reckon, the 'must have' titles on PS3 right now are:
Ratchet and Clank
Assassin's Creed (borked!)
Uncharted
Again, assuming I buy them brand new (not likely), and assuming Sony get's 100% of that, that's $180. Still at a -$20 loss.
Now, I'm probably more frugal than most. Hell, I'm POOR. If I had money, I wouldn't spend so much of my free time with my fist in the air on the Kotaku comments section. But even so, if Sony doesn't get out some more hot shit titles, and soon, this console is going the way of the Jaguar.

Well guess what, that is completely normal for a spike to occur during the Christmas season... if it didn't then you'd be getting worried... 300% isn't huge and it's completely normal.

I expect the Wii and probably the 360 will have seen bigger than 300% gains if you include Black Friday week sales... we can't analyse this using VG Chartz data yet, but according to VGChartz weekly expectations Wii has risen by 207% and PS3 has rise by 305% from early October numbers.

This sort of PR Spin is useless, talking about percentages are useless when you don't know the number they are coming from.

30,000 is 300% increase on 10,000 and that is not a very astonishing figure.

Weekly the PS3 was previously selling 30,000 so that increases them to 90,000 PW or there about's and Wii and Xbox 360 might hit up to 300,000 - 400,000 this week then it doesn't look so great any more.

God I hate Sony's PR they talk so much BS.

Guess you didn't read those recent newstories on the decline of reading in the United States. I think a lot of 40 gig ps3s will soon be returned when the reciever tries to play a ps2 game in it. When I mention the 40 gig PS3 as lacking the ability to play ps2 games people visibly shudder at that announcement and state they won't buy the 40 gig. I think Sony should have added a voice over for their commericals saying the 40 gig at 399 doesn't play ps2 games.

The system launched on November 17th. The vast majority of those consoles sold in November were sold on November 17th.

What would be the incentive to buy one on Black Friday weekend? There were no sales on them. At that time there were barely any available in stores, and they were still going for large amounts of money on ebay.

Xmas 2003 was the start of the GC's 3rd year, and the PS3 just turned one. It (GC) didn't have the stigma of an expensive game console, nor did it really lack software for the first year.

Likening both situations is rather silly all things considered. Circumstances are completely different. Things aren't mirrored every generation, otherwise the Wii wouldn't be where it is nor would the PS3 or the 360.

I was shocked, shocked at this display of competently adequate salesmanship! The guy actually walked out of the store with a PS3 without being hassled by the staff. Amazing!

I guess even the dumbasses who work at game stores have been brought around by the price drop/40GB model. This is the first time I've ever heard someone ask about a PS3 in a game store and not heard the clerk try to talk them into an Xbox 360 or Wii instead, even if they clearly don't want one or already have one. It happened to me and it's happened to everybody else I've overheard trying to buy one before this past weekend.

And spending $400 to play PS2 games doesn't make much sense. I have a core 20GB unit (with a 160GB HDD), and I still haven't packed up my PS2 because of poor audio output. The softer vid output doesn't look quite good either especially if it's upscaled.

i believe it says it on the back of the box, in small print. it should say it on the front of the box in large print.

there are gonna be some angry kids who get a ps3 this christmas and put in their ps2 titles and they don't work.

everyone seems to think that 'everyone' in the world knows that the 40gb ps3 doesn't work with ps2 titles. i guarantee you that 80% of the buying parents do not know this. but shortly will after christmas morning.

If it INCREASED 100%, that would mean it doubled because it increased by the amount it was, total. Now, obviously, if we capped it at 100%, and last month you sold 100 consoles, what would you do if the next month you sold 201 consoles? It'd be a 101% increase.

Increasing 300% means it quadrupled.

The PS3 is selling far less than the Wii when the numbers tally at the end of the year, and it will probably remain that way. Black Friday sales based on a recent price cut are not telling of overall performance.

Indeed. Sony's issues with PS3 will only make them a better competitor too. I also would to say that Insomniac and Naughty Dog were pivotal for this holiday. If Sony fumbled this holiday it would be basically over good thing it didn't happen yet. The good new marketing campaign helps too.

ok, well they don't say 'new game' in the ad, but i don't see any ads for year old games for the other consoles running in the magazines. if any decent titles were released and the console was doing well, this ad would have been shelved 6 months ago.

you don't see gears of war ads for the 360 (ok you do for the pc).
