Hello All,

We wanted to drop in and let every one know about our new strummer solution for the Rock Band Guitars. We have tried to make it as Installation friendly as possible. No wires need to be cut. Currently it is compatible with Generation 1, 3, and 3.1 Strum Bar Hardware. But Generation 2 and 4 are not far behind. See our site OR email us for questions regarding compatibility. Generation 1 is the one which everyone has been returning the most. Our solution clicks big and loud just like the old guitars because it uses the same switches. We think those little click switches have proven their endurance. Plus we believe Rock Band should be cranked to the point where you just hear a faint click anyway

The Kit is very non invasive and can be un-installed just as easy. With this upgrade ALL mush goes out the door and the Strum Bar returns to center just as good as the old guitars. Please give us a look.

Tremendous backlog of replacement orders!!! You'll be better off throwing the junk back in the box and taking it back to the store for exchange. Let the BestBuy's and Wal-Marts deal with EA. When you open an incident ticket at [support.ea.com] they will beg you for a credit card for immediate processing and shipment. Once the ticket is submitted you WILL quickly receive a UPS tracking number which makes you think it's on its way. But look closely, the UPS notice will state that billing info has been received. That's when the waiting starts!

Here's the response I received from EA Support:
"I have checked the status of your replacement "Billing Info. Received" and it appears that it is still in the process. I apologize for the delay, and I assure you that we are doing everything we can to get replacement orders processed and shipped out as quickly as possible. Beyond that, we do not have the ability to provide any more detailed information with regards to the status of the shipping."

If you still have the box you're better off returning to the store for quick and immediate replacement!

qztwds

I've developed a replacement for the switch mechanism of the strum bar of the Rock Band guitars. I'm currently looking for a few beta testers - so if you have a broken guitar, or just want to improve the feel of the strum bar, let me know by dropping me a line at guitar@bytearts.com.

There is no charge involved -- but you will need to install the replacement yourself (takes about 30 minutes) and provide feedback to us.

BTW, by my calculations, the original switches in the guitar will typically fail after 50-100 songs ! (Depending on how hard you use it). Overall the guitar is pretty well designed and built, but the original strum bar switch is really sub-standard.

ByteArts

He went to his mother's for a few days and when he came back he was begging to play. We kept getting booed off the stage. It was horrible. Yes, we finally figured it out that the down strum was not registering!!! We are soooooo disappointed! Now what?

Lemanski

ok people... mine started double stumming last night after 5 days of play and I did the ole pop it open trick and what I found was a screw holding the two switches for the strum bar.. examined it a minute and turned the screws a bit tighter which you can tell is a loose switch. put it back together and played 7 hours with no problems. be careful of an oddball peice of plastic on the outer edge that is just there.with no purpose. put it back right before reassembly.. they must be afraid to tighten the screws too much and stripping them cause both my switches were loose. really easy fix for an adult.

yourused

vv I just checked the 10K, it's a church's fund raiser project. Amazing how some people can't read past the first three lines of anything :)

But about Rock Band:
The Mic software is fine, but hard for people who can actually sing because well most of those people have their own singing voice which is the opposite of what you need for Rock Band, try singing like Ozzy not yourself :)

The Guitars:
My PS3 version works fine but my friend's stopped after the second day. Yeah EA is taking care of it, but honestly I'm at the point where I have to say F*ck EA. It's as if they want to rush as many products as they can with no quality control, what a shame.

The Drums:
BEST PART of the game. I dabble on a real set and I have to say, on expert, it feels about as real as you can get for a game. Great idea and nice feel.

duhduh

We got our game Dec. 27th, and today Dec. 29th the guitar has been giving us problems, not letting us strum down, and sometimes not even up. When whe found out that all the other guitars we got for Christmas wont work for the Rock Band we've decided to send it back, it's a waste for us, I love Rock Band the first two days of playing, but now we don't like it, we're better off with our Guitar Hero

ilovemikey3

I have got a problem with my Guitar as well. I was playing with the wife last night and she was complaining that she kept missing the notes, I was on the drums at the time. So I grabbed the guitar and tried to play a song solo. I started playing and noticed that when you strum down the paddle sticks in the downward position but when you strum up it spring back down to the neutral position. I am going to contact EA warranty and see if I can get a new one. It's a bummer since my wife went through a lot of trouble to get it for me. I have a PS2 but the PS3 bundled hardware is compatible with a PS2.

Aybabtu

I know what you're saying, but these things are problems! They are, really. We bought Rock Band, and it is super awesome, but you cannot fault someone for being freaking pissed that their guitar controller breaks the FIRST DAY. and with gentle use too, because I take fantastic care of everything I own, so shut up! Guess what else? Our 360 that we bought on launch day fucked up too! And I WATCHED one die (RROD) right in front of me two weeks ago as well. Big deal, but it has been documented, to the point that Microsoft will STILL fix them, so you know they're not gonna take the hit on that unless there really is a problem.

And yes, I had a Super Nintendo that plugged on for years, but my NES got a little touchy. It worked most of the time though.

before i came home from college a group of us purchased rock band. We were really excited (360 version) and since i am able to play Guitar Hero on expert and can manage most songs I decided to use the new guitar and i was really really exicted. Well after one night of play (from 6pm until like 1-2am) the down strum started messing up. I assumed it was because i was tired. Next day strum still was not working. I was still passing the songs but my multiplier was not ever more than x2. Then it completely stopped working (down and up strums.) We got the guitar replaced and the replacement became faulty after only 3-4 hours of play. We have not replaced the guitar yet but we plan on buying a second GH2 controller for the 360. When I got home i was thrilled to find that my parents had purchased rock band for the PS3 for my christmas. I immediately opended it and started playing with my brother. The guitar for the PS3 lasted 2 days. Now it is faulty and I am getting my replacement within 2-3 buisness days. No problems with the drum or the mic yet and hopefully there will not be any. I thought at first maybe the new feel of the guitar was what was throwing me off but im sorry... someone who can pass Green Grass and High Tides with 90% on a GH2 controller should not get less than 80% on medium on Creep. Obviously there is a problem and I know I take care of my stuff because my PS2 (bought it when it originally came out) STILL works as well as my 2 guitars for GH1 for PS2 and my PS3 guitar for GHIII. The problem is the guitar... not the gamer.

uncwtgood

On top of that, 2 hours into playing I got the three red rings of death on my xbox. Talk about the most disappointind night ever. I was looking to make some money out of this and want to start mass producing it if people are finding problems with their bass pedal lacking good reinforcment. i was thinking about selling the diamond reinforcment with 6 bolts for $15 dollars not including shipping.

@AgainstOne: The problem with this is that it voids the warranty. I'm used to modding controllers (Beatmania IIDX? Yeah...) but when I can actually deal with the company that makes said controller, I'd love to have it fixed/replaced.

Luckily, I've been beating the hell out of these drums for almost a week now and my only complaint is that I suck at bass pedal (doesn't feel shit's worth like a real bass pedal, not enough kick back.) My brother though, has been having a hell of a time, now only able to up-pick.

On that note though, I payed a visit to EA's warranty replacement site earlier today and I will be receiving a new controller in two days, the only hitch is that they are taking a safety deposit, which I will be refunded. Hopefully they fixed the connector on this, and if not- I'll know with-in a week. Worst case scenario, I break down and buy Guitar Hero 3 for the 360, something I've been avoiding means I have two controllers for the PS2. This separation of Harmonix from Read Octane/Activision has been both bad and good, in that order from those companies :P (I don't like EA, but EA most certianly has more money to throw around at something like this than Activision does.)

Ichigo Style

@samuraisul:
A now 36 page (and counting) thread at the official Rock Band site says you're wrong.

A lot of people (me included) are pretty gentle with the controllers. I just use my thumb to downstrum on it and I don't thrash at all. The controller is of poor quality.

It says something when the same story seems to come from everyone: You get a good several hours out of it, maybe 6-10, and then the strum bar stops working correctly. Either double-registering or not registering notes. It's obvious that it's not an issue of not being "used to it yet," as most people aren't complaining about the strum bar sucking right out of the box.

Huckleberry

I got to say that I thought I was not in the "internet complaining pool" as people have been labled however my guitar slowly stopped regestering the downstrum. I tried it a couple of times and the probelm got progressively worse. A somepoint I had finished a song as was pressing down to try to highlight choose another song and the thing had completely stopped working as it wouldn't register at all so before people start saying i just suck at the game think about it, it would not register in the main menu...maybe I suck at main menuing, I don't know. I raved about the guitar before the game came out and wanted to play with it really bad so its not like I am a hater, I love this game and fortunately for me both my x-plores work with the game or I would have been seriously bummed out and pissed. Seriously I know people are touchy about people dissing things they want but I don't play my guitar underwater or smash it at the end of a set. I play it with care . For all the people that think we are just the "internet complaining pool" I hope your controllers fail. Its retarded to dismiss the people out there who are having issues. I have 4 freinds who all bought assasins creed for PS3 and they had a blast talking aobut all the freezes and glitches they had and I have some other friend who have it on PS3 who had the game freeze only once. Just couse you didn't get the problem doesn't mean it doesn't exist. My 360 RROD'ed and when I tried to get it fixed microsoft said that since I had the system plugged to a surge protector. That was before the company admited to high failure rates. Were we complain then or was it a real problem. Scratched halo disc anyone? I like my 360, I like halo 3, and I like RB but my like for these probucts is not going to make me turn a blind eye to the problems face by me and or other people. If these problems make yo uhave the product more power to you. If you overcome the hurdles and still like what you bought then thats great. Just wish people would stop dising others for their misfortune.

Genra

Well the party went really well anyway. Someone brought another fender that hadn't broken yet so that was good. Pretty much everyone agreed this is exactly the party game the 360 needed desperately to compete with the Wii... and most thought it was the best party game ever... and several thought it was the best game ever. A few total non-gamers said to the effect "this is the only video game I have ever liked... and it was a ton of fun".

theskeels

My fender went bust after a few hours like so many others. i tried using compressed air like they recommend on the EA site which sort of worked for a bit (didn't screw me up quite as much) but after another hour or so, the downstrokes were worthless again.
im currently waiting on my replacement, which claims to be super fast, 2-day air shipping so it should arrive early next week (we'll see about that!).
anyway, i went back to my les paul GH3 controller and I realized i like it better anyway. if only they would put those solo fret buttons on the les pauls, they would be PERFECT.
no trouble with the mic or drums... well, none caused by the hardware anyway (sigh).

BruzeWayne

Guitar down strum is boned. Acted up after about 2 hours or play. We switched to the Xplorer and there has been no problem.

Drums. I have good rhythm. I can play the drums. There are points where it just quits on you. Mostly the red head. Yellow SOMETIMES, but mostly red. At first I thought I was just not getting it, but there it was showing up again and again during a perfect session and then it quits for like 5 or 6 hits.

So I actually took apart the guitar and found out the issue. Unlike the Guitar Hero guitars that use a "clicky spring" that recoils the switch to neutral position for the strummer, the Rock Band one uses four tiny little sponges, two for the switch and two for the additional ones to make it "springier".

Problem is, these sponges aren't actually glued down and can be moved easily. Playing it after a while makes keeps the sponge compressed and not recoil, resulting in the double strum (which is just the switch being kept down) or non responsiveness.

Hopefully I'll figure out if there's a homebrew solution that involves using something stronger than a sponge...

asangurai

Sure enough..sure makes it hard to play the game. And to the guy who claims we are all playing it rough, i dont. Just crappy design. Anyone else play the band tour and notice you play the same songs over and over and over and over..I think we played Sabatoge about 35 times in an hour of playing. Borring.

Piblo

I was half-way waiting for this. My strumbar gave out after about six songs--I can hear something moving around in the casing, so I figure a tab or something gave on the strummer mechanism. With modern manufacturing these things happen, so I'm not going to kick anyone in the nuts over it.

It helps that EA is 2-day shipping me a replacement for completely frees just on my statement that the strummer doesn't work, so I'll cope, really I will. I have my Xplorer anyway, so it's not a complete loss.

Mine just had a similar problem. I had to strum it almost the way down in order to get to register (the upstrums were still fine).

I fixed it though. I opened up the back of the guitar and saw the sensor for it. All it is are these 2 tweezer-like metal prongs that contact each other. THere are two of these, one for downstrum and one for upstrum. Just by strumming, i can see that the downstrum required more travel in order to get the tweezer sensors to close together. I just used a very small piece of M3 stick-it paper (the part w/ the adhesive), folded over once, and jammed it behind a prong. This makes the prong closer together for the downstrum making it more sensitive so that it takes much less travel for it to sense the strum. This fix brought it back to its original sensitivity. If you want more sensitivitiy, you can use 4 layers of paper (fold the paper twice) to make the prongs super close to each other.

mkygod

@Aragashi: Went through your exact same situation, on 2 different Best Buys. However, one of them did not work at all.

My guitar seems to work fine for now, but the strum is a whole lot harder to hit than any of the GH guitars. I even had to go down a level on some songs, 'cause I just couldn't hit some of the notes as easily as I used too.

Just on this topic, so many people have been reporting problems / design flaws on their guitars. I really don't think it's something that unusual anymore. Guitars feel cheap and uncomfortable, and they don't even work on Best Buy when they've been out for a few days, and the GH units work great and they've been out for weeks. What gives?

This really sucks, as we had to pay a lot of money for this, and not all of us have extra guitars.

Oh good, I thought I was just crazy. This started happening on my guitar a few hours into playing. It's odd, because the first thing I noticed when I picked up the guitar, was how flimsy the neck felt. It seems like it wouldn't take much to accidentally snap. I did remark on how solid the base of the guitar seemed tohugh, so it's ironic that it's that piece I had the problem with. I love the fact that the strum bar doesn't have that awful clicking noise, but I don't like the fact that it broke a few hours into use.

I just brought my copy to a party. Played the hell out of the game for about 4 hours and everything functioned perfectly. We're also talking about a lot of drunk kids who don't normally play rhythm games, so to say that they were hitting 90% on all three instruments, is a testament to how good the game is in a social setting. Also, because they were drunk, it should be considerably harder to strum the guitar in time and correctly -- but they managed. I've had no downstrum issues as of yet, my room mate claims something is wrong, but it hasn't affected me.

I love this game so far and it is 100% better than GHIII in my opinion. I actually get bored playing GH with friends, but Rock Band is fresh and the social aspect of it is amazing.

Doomstink

I tested the guitar and the drums, but not the microphone yet because it's 1:00 am and my family is sleeping. I found that the strum bar on the new guitar is pretty weak. It feels like it could fail at any minute. During In Bloom and Maps on Expert difficulty (all I've done so far), I found that the strum bar seemed to miss notes here and there that I almost know for certain would've been hits if I were using my GH 2 controller.

About the drums, I was hitting them really softy because it's late and I didn't want to wake anyone up, but they seemed to hit maybe half the time. Which I guess could be expected with how gentle I was being. I'm not worried about the functionality of the drums, but I am worried about the noise. I took a few practice strokes to see how they'd respond to a fuller force, and they responded great, but it seemed quite loud to me. Nobody in the apartment woke up, though, so I guess during the day, when I can turn the sound in the game up and rock out, it may not be noticeable to anyone outside my room.

But the controller... I'm very disappointed. I was really looking forward to having a second guitar, but this isn't much of an improvement over the original GH 2 guitar for 360. The whammy bar seems better, and I like the placement of the select & start buttons better, the whole thing looks MUCH better, and I like the addition of the higher buttons on the neck. But the strum bar doesn't seem durable or fully responsive (which is VERY important, unfortunately), and the vertical tilt sensor seems to want the guitar ALL THE WAY UP, where it was more lenient with the other controller. I'll have to try the microphone later.

baked ham

I had two main problems.

1. Pretty minor. The orange fret would randomly light up once in a while.

@ Exo:

It's been a day and people's guitars are breaking in a very specific manner.

One day.

Even if you've been doing nothing but wailing on your plastic guitar for 24 hours, it's unexcusable. We are talking about a controller that people are going to wail on. People have been wailing on other plastic guitars for years now with no problems. Harmonix/EA should have built it to withstand a reasonable amount of punishment. If they didn't, they deserve the backlash they receive. If their QA on their instruments was poor and a lot of defective parts got through, they deserve the backlash they receive. It looks like they rushed Rock Band for Christmas, and now they're going to pay, both in terms of PR and in terms of replacement instruments.

I have an equally long list of old electronics that still work, and I don't buy the line that these people are just abusing their electronics. I'm currently in the process of getting my manufacturer-provided replacement MP3 player replaced because the replacement they sent me for my original broken player was broken as well. It's a Creative Zen, by the way. Don't tell me that I broke my Zen before I even got it. And it's not just one guy saying that his guitar is busted. Read the link.

This personally does not surprise me. I was totally psych'ed for Rock Band until I played the guitar at Best Buy. Cheap and shoddy. I also remember that the drums disappeared after a day of being on display. I think I know why now. I would blame EA, but from everything I've read, EA doesn't have that much of a say in the game, they just publish it.

thenino85

Unfortunately in this case my guitar is busted too. After about 6 hours it started double strumming on every down strum. I like the GH3 controller better anyway, but now I don't have a guitar for my bassist...

CrunchBite

Check out my comment history, I freaking called this. EA + ANYTHING = incredible disaster. If EA bought Bungie, Halo 4 would be the worst game of the year. This game really needed to just be Guitar Hero 4: Rock Band so that it wouldn't have to become such a colossal commercial failure. Seriously, the Toys r Us I went to pick up Trauma Center today said they had received ONE copy of the 360 game.

If you are in that short of a supply, LAUNCH WHEN YOU HAVE ENOUGH FUCKING UNITS. I hope this problem isn't for PS3 owners too though, I hear they don't have any other option...

usfslacker

I noticed, at three separate Best Buys, that the down strum on the guitars was wonky. On one of them, it wouldn't even register anymore and on the other two it'd only sometimes register and you could never hold it down for long notes. I was told numerous times that this was because they sent out early gear to get all the demo kiosks up.

And so, like the dutiful consumer that I am, I went and picked up Rock Band on launch day. But I wasn't able to open it up that night and now I'm glad as can be that I didn't. I just got back from Best Buy, where I returned my unopened Rock Band bundle. They still had three palettes worth of the bundles there.

Deviation59

I've seen plenty of reports that probably tend towards either a minor design flaw, or a batch with a construction flaw. In either case, if someone has been able to do a gut transplant between a PS2 and 360 Guitar Hero controller, someone on the internets will find a simple fix involving a toothpick and a dab of hot glue or something.

Jazhuis

There have been brave souls who have opened the guitar to find that the switches for the paddle is connected by hot glue. I finessed the guitar after feeling how sensitive it is but after about 6 hours total play it did start having issues. If you slam the paddle a lot it'll go in an hour but in the end the paddle will begin to fail regardless of how strenuous the use.

I wanted the Fender to work out soooo much but once the paddle failed I slapped in the Les Paul and the scores went right up. Its sad but Harmonix needed Red Octane on that guitar controller. You shouldn't have to handle a controller like a piece of fine china. It really needed some more durability tests.

DasKonstruct

I haven't had any problems with the drums after 2 days of solid play, and the guitar strum did occasional "double strums" here and there, but the problem went away. The strum feels completely different than the ones on the guitar hero I and II controllers, this new one feels like you can just slap your thumb against it and it works fine. If you try to strum down extra hard it might cause the double strums, just try slapping it more lightly and see if the problem goes away. Overall, I love the new guitar because you don't hear that loud-as-hell click sound every time you strum.

Ed_209
