Even given the attempt to get a low CERO rating, that should be done by removing the content from the actual factual Japanese copy of the game, not censoring the US version on any Japanese machine.

And just to go off on a tangent, how low are they going for here, in terms of CERO rating? Call of Duty 3 has a C rating with shooting people, Virtua Fighter 5 has a B with punching people. Uncharted would likely get a B or a C. It's not as violent as Ninja Gaiden to get a D. And even if it did get a D, many games like Resident Evil 4 were huge sellers with a D rating.

To explain in an example, let's take this game. You buy Uncharted. You want to play it, and you also want your kid to play it. You don't want the kid to see the blood, so what do you do? Nothing. Say a Sony out there makes the ability to select the age group for a user (similar to 360s parental control thingie). Now under this concept, games would not be prohibited to play, but they would allow the user account to access things appropriate to the age group. So my account, being full-access, would have blood and things, and my son's account would blend out blood and some other things.

I realize that a lot of comments would come which would say "sure, but parents won't know how to use that feature and/or children could circumvent it." Sure, it happens today too. This concept just enables companies to sell more games because the rating system would not be game based, but user based over a console.

Also, the Japanese + English and whatever detection isn't on the firmware, it's more of the hardware itself. I can install an American firmware if I wanted too, but if certain functions were only meant for USA, it won't be on Japanese PS3 and visa versa. I've tried it long time ago when JP got Edy payment option, but JP firmware did nothing to the US PS3 to add the Edy.

As for the software, it doesn't matter if you get the JP one or US one, they are the exact same game 1 for 1, only difference is packaging (at least for this game and R&C for a recent one).

Yeah, the Godfather is quite old, too, but many, many Americans (and Italians, I'm sure) have heard of it. Also, I have lived here for almost a year and a half now, I know enough Japanese to know that Scroll isn't a Japanese word and that Ninja is pronounced Knee-n-ja(as in john). I showed my friend a clip from Youtube and he had never seen it.
I know both are old, but they are still my favorites. I gave Naruto and Dragon Ball z a try, but they are lame. Color me Red, White, and Blue, but I like the old fashioned, ultra-gory Anime.

I got mad when I read the title of this post and then when I watched the video I realized my Japanese PS3 had censored Uncharted and I didn't even notice. Not only that, but I played through Resistance twice and didn't notice a thing about missing blood. Also, my Japanese friend watched "Afro Samurai" with me and asked if it was American. I said I thought so because Samuel L. Jackson is the voice. He said, "It must be. It's too violent for Japanese." Turns out it was made by Japanese dudes. He has also never heard of "Akira" or "Ninja Scroll", but loves Gundam. (Gundam Musou sucks, btw)

Few Japanese people are likely to want to import Uncharted from the US. The Japanese version is being released at the start of December, a scant few weeks after the North American release, with a few Japanese translation, unlike some of the EA Japanese PS3 releases which are stuck over there as is.

So the most likely people to be running a US copy of Uncharted on a Japanese PS3 are a) people who bought a Japanese PS3 but live in North America or b) Westerners living in Japan who might get a copy as a present or wish to spend the extra money to import.

Why should these two groups get an edited version of Uncharted? When I lived in Japan I had a local copy of Resistance. I didn't know anything was edited out of it, but I consider that fair enough if I was prepared to buy the Japanese copy of the game. However, if you are not living in Japan and buy a game from an uncensored country, while you living in said country, you should be able to have access to the uncensored game. The game and machine shouldn't have a conference and decide that I'm not allowed.

I love idea of region-free gaming but things like this and the region-locked Uncharted demo fiasco take the sheen off, and make it seem like Sony is trying to play fast and loose with what they meant by a region free console. It seems like further pokes in the eye for international owners who travel and early adopters. If I hadn't supported the machine since its launch day, I could have saved a lot of money and avoided issues such as these.

Perhaps this is similar to how Ratchet has those goofy big black eyebrows, glassy eyes and green pants if you play it on Japanese hardware, except this was actually required by CERO (Japan's version of ESRB) in order to get some certain rating.

Ehh, and when I say "refuse blood outright", I don't mean, refuse it in every game where it detects "blood", that would be stupid - I mean, they put shit in the firmware just to change these two or three aspects of Uncharted specifically, so no matter what version of Uncharted you load, your firmware is telling it which options to run with.

So when you load it, it either replaces or runs a secondary string of code in place for the blood elements.

But that's just ass talk really, I naturally have no idea how this occurs.
