@Polluted: uh shenmue was PLANNED for the saturn, theres videos of it, and at times, you couldnt even tell it was a saturn game. i think the saturn may have been the hardest console to program for from what ive read. but that video and some other things prove to me that the the playstation was no better at 3d, just easier to get it to do what you wanted. same goes with ps3, its better than 360, but 360 is easier to "talk" into makin pretty games by the programmers, but i think it was far worse with the saturn.

shouryuuken

It's a master system tune remixed with the NES chip and other stuff. Not entirely sure.. ask the composer.

However the SMS chip sounded great in the right hands. I recommend listening to Golvellius, Power Strike 2, Wonder Boy 3 and The Flash to hear what Could be done with the chip.

alianger

Alright, hello everyone. I just signed in here to tell you that this video was made by me, alone. SMSPower has nothing to do with the making of it. I've mailed people here about it, but they're not doing anything about it, so I'm going to take the video down and add a title to it. You can still find it under the same name on Youtube.

Let's hope this site bothers to check their sources in the future.

@TheIrishNinja:

I played it ways back, and again when it was released for the GBA. It was impressive when I was younger but it does not stand the test of time, which to me is a major requisite of it something being one of the greatest of anything, especially a genre that gets better with each passing year.

And I don't really see how it was one of the most influential RPGs. I remember already being familiar with the dungeon style from playing first-person dungeon crawlers on various computers, and the overworld stuff isn't too different from Dragon Warrior. Aside from mixing the two kinds of RPGs and putting some sci-fi in, I don't really see anything new it brought to the table.

Chintz

I also grew up with the Master System. I was young, so I'd always die on the same levels...I wonder how I'd do now...

The only game I ever beat for the system, I can't remember the name of, maybe someone could help me out. You were a red duck who ran around punching things with a huge white fist, which you could power up for a bigger hit. There were also guns laying about that you could pick up for a short time.

I will always know Alex Kidd as "Alex the Kid" as my cousin and I called it. Very frustrating game. We'd blow through every level until the castle where we'd die and have to start the game over. I will always remember the trick where you run away from the first ghost with a spoon on his nose so that when you break the final block it's a free man instead of another ghost.

Space Harrier was fun, but never held my attention long.

Shinobi was my favourite, but I don't know I ever passed the boss in the video. The one with all the guys in chairs pushing you into an electric wall.

Another game, which I believe is called Spy Hunter (located at around 3:57 in the video) I played for years, literally YEARS before I realized you needed a second controller plugged in to access the menu/inventory.

I also had Double Dragon (never passed the level where the wall pushes you into the water) a golf game and After Burner.

Bluecell

Man, I was raised on a Nintendo. My cousin had a Master System though, so I recall favorites like Wonderboy 3: The Dragon's Trap. There were also some Shmups that I don't remember the name of and probably never will know what they were. Kind of a shame, but there you go.

Personally, I loved this video. Then again, I'm a sucker for the old school. (I should play Phantasy Star...Alex Kidd was freaking awesome though.)

I'm all for the Saturn, but it had nothing on the PS1 graphically. It was great for 2d games. When you compare multi plat 3d titles between the two systems, PS1 destroys it hands down. Tomb Raider comes to mind. Or "Gex" or that "Croc" game. Shenmue was on the Dreamcast too...not the Saturn. I didn't mention the Xbox because I think the Dreamcast was pretty much a done deal by the time the Xbox came out. Obviously Xbox had the graphical chops to easily outclass anything else on the market at that time.

Polluted

Seems insulting to put NES music over the first part of this montage! That's the one technical thing the Master System didn't have the NES beat with: it's sound chip.
I was brought up with the NES, myself. I didn't even know this thing existed until a few years ago, and I just got one of my own this year...and it is indeed like some kind of strange alternate universe, heh. Every time I play, I'm left thinking, "This could have been my childhood..."

Kulor

@Polluted: actually, there are still plenty of games on the cast that i think looked better than ps2 games. i never cared for ps2s graphics, i always liked cube and xbox better.. and the fact that ps1 and 2 did better than all the competition proves that graphics doesnt mean anything. in fact the saturn was more powerful than the playstation, just a beast to program for. dont believe me? go check out video of saturn shenmue. sega just screwed up by releasing stuff before the last consoles life was up, and not supporting the previous console any longer, plus... 32x and sega cd, nuff said.

shouryuuken

I saved up for a system and was swayed to get the SMS instead of the NES after playing the SMS at a few friends houses. Zillion remains one of my all time favorite games. I think it easily rivaled Metroid on the NES. And what, no Quartet in the video? That was the only game I ever did a speed run on.

The SMS was the shiznit. I thought it was the coolest thing that not only did it take regular cartidges, but it took these little card things too. Graphics were better than the NES, hands-down. And Phantasy Star, for my money, is one of the top 3 pure role-playing games of all time. Excellent characters, stories, and graphics for its time. They need to remake Phantasy Star 1 for one of the current gen systems. I'm not an XBOX 360 fan but if they remade Phantasy Star for it I would have to buy one.

klashawnd

That was an awesome trip down memory lane! idve added Penuin Land, Gangster Town, the other Alex Kidd games, mebbe Aztec Adventure and a couple others, but they really covered most of the highlights, those were like the bargain bin titles i got when Lionel Playworld when down.
still, much love to the maker of that video.

TheIrishNinja

I loved my SMS. At the time I was a total Sega fanboy and laughed at NES gamers with their 'crappy' games like Super Mario and Link.

My time on the SMS was spent with amazing games like Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Phantasy Star, Golvellius, Double Dragon, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Hang On, Outrun, After Burner, Alien Syndrome, and R-Type. I had the Sega control stick and even had the 3D glasses and loved them for Space Harrier and Zaxxon.

The SMS wasn't my first system-- I had been gaming on computers for years before I ever picked up a control pad, but I think those were the best gaming years of my life. To date no console or computer has given me that kind of pure joy, although the Genesis and the Amiga came close...

Jonathan in Kichijoji

I always thought the Saturn was better hardware than the original PS, but much more difficult to program for with its two CPU's. Sorta mirrors this gen of consoles, with a hard to program for, underachieving system out there.

Satyagraha

@Heavyfuel:

True. I was thinking more about the Saturn and Dreamcast. The Genesis/SNES wars were different than modern console wars because most titles that came out on both systems were completely different for each one. The Genesis was underpowered, but we still had the better versions of lots of games. Jurrassic Park and Aladdin come to mind.
I loved Sega, but every time they announced that they were going to be releasing a new system early to get a leg up on the competition I cringed. They always just ended up with the least powerful system on the market. It was kind of fun being the only Sega fanboy on the block for all those years, but there was no denying that my friends' PS1's, N64's and eventually PS2's looked better than my Saturn or my Dreamcast. It should be the gameplay that counts, but if graphics didn't matter we'd still have Sega hardware. Ahh well...maybe someday.

Polluted
