Yeah... this still doesn't demean the way men are on other online sites, for instance, Myspace.

"hey girl, I like your titties. What's your number?" Sad to say but its true story.
And I've been dating him ever since.

Ridiculous, is what men are. Also I think that because they are online and not in person, men have more courage to say such things to women. In real life, there's just no way he'll get a chick go out with him by saying such things, much less sleep with him.

Senshik

yeah it's the internet so anon will bash the hell out of you if you reveal ANY weakness.. i recall one match when my friend made a gay joke at me, don't really remember what it was, i said something like "well you know me..." and all of our randomly selected teamates were all "OMG FAG OMGOMGOMG" for the rest of the match, it leads me to think that most of the gamers on xbox live are just one hive mind and think and react in the same way to the same situations.

essko

I've talked over X-Box Live a few times and haven't gotten any weird/offensive. First time was playing Puzzle Fighter for a few hours. All I got was a couple of "Good game"s and "Thanks for playing"s. Second time, I spoke over the headset with my squeaky kid while my friends were playing Halo 3 (I don't like first-person stuff). Nobody said anything weird; they just muted me.

Mia-Mo

@crazyrabbits: Chivalry has been dead for a while, actually.

I think it's a result of the gradual slutification (wow, I've just invented a new awesome word!) prevalent in society. Girls learn young that they can get attention from males by acting as sluts, and reap what they had sown later when they finally become mature enough not to fall into that and men their own age still act like dicks.

After all, why would 19-20 years olds bother being chivalrous and caring with girls their age when they can find 16 years old girls that will act like sluts for their attention?

Men will stop acting like dicks when younger girls will stop acting like sluts, it's that simple. And vice-versa. Now as to which one started the vicious cycle is a chicken-or-egg question.

Guizzy

I may be going against the grain here, but I don't lump females as any different than males over LIVE. I've run into plenty of the Females who are just as lewd, immature and rude as any of the Males.

Granted, there's probably a chip on their shoulder from all the abuse they get (and I'm privy to it frequently, as I'm usually partied up with, amongst a bunch of dudes, a "cute sounding" Soccer Mom), but don't throw that shit on me, Sister!

And if there's one line I hear from the girls, it's always this one "How old ARE you? I bet you're still playing in your parents basement, Creepy."

No, actually, I'm playing in the theater room of the home I OWN in front a TV that's probably wider than you are tall-- after having worked all day for a living I earned after attending and graduating from college.

SenorChefy

That's a pretty generalized comment. I've met several women online who are just as trashy, just as bad as the guys. It doesn't matter whether or not it's a beat-em-or-join-em situation. In fact, some of my good Live friends are women that I've met through games and they have no problems playing with the boys, which makes 'em pretty cool, if you ask me.

In any case, your statement is on the same level as, "All girls with XBL accounts weigh over a deuce." It's simply not true.

dunetiger reads kotaku, seems pleased

I don't play on live so...

But yeah, I've noticed a lot more female voices in FPSs these days, earlier in this decade, I only knew about a few members of my EQ guild being female. But back then I don't remeber any females in FPSs. PlanetSide had a few, but I'm guessing the fact that PS is also a MMO helped that a bit. In 2004 or 2005, I was shocked when I was playing Natural Selection and doing some of the best I've done (in combat mode), and the only player on my team doing better than me was a constantly giggling chick.

But I'm hearing female voices all of the time in FPSs these days. I mean, MMORPGs have had plenty of female players for some time, and a game like PlanetSide, although a FPS, isn't that far off... but when I'm playing TF2 or NS it's still a little strange... the strangest thing is apparently it's normal now. Like, on PC FPSs, I don't hear anyone say "Wow, a chick? That's novel." or whatnot anymore.

It really is a good thing, I think. It was really awkward only hearing other guys all of the time, and guys tend to be a lot more civil when it's not just boys.

Akin

Anyways, read through the responses on the asshattery, and I have to say that my favorites are the Barbie, MySpace, sandwich, and "balls" responses. I do find it weird, however, that two of the comments they get most often are, "You must be ugly," and, "You must be hot." I guess the one they lead with depends on whether they still think they have a chance or if they've been rejected often enough to have gotten the idea already. I wonder how many girl gamers masquerade as guys just to avoid having to deal with this (granted, it would mean never being able to play online games that allow voice transmissions).

Purple Dave

Also my ego is so huge I like to start flame wars about poultry. You should see me go on the farming forums.

Xbox Live is like a microcosm of the real world. It's filled mostly
with racists, homophobes, complete assholes, ignorant douchebags, and
total idiots. You're never going to affect change in the way they act
or think, so it's simply pointless to even go so far as to actually
interact with them. However, there are normal, intelligent people
interspersed throughout the general population and just like in real
life, if you happen to come across one of these sane, rational people,
don't ever let them go.

Thank goodness for Halo 3's easy-to-use mute system. Whenever I play
I set my voice communication settings to where I can only hear my party
members and teammates. That way, I don't have to hear the opposing team
call me a "faggot" repeatedly, although that doesn't prevent my team
from doing the same if my teammates happen to be arrogant dicks.
Kids(and many adults) these days..it's always "Faggot this," and
"Faggot that." Sooo lame.

Yeah, of course... everybody's asking for abusive comments just because of their name, voice, nationality, preferences, and mere presence on the Internet. Yup. /ban

Why folks think it's acceptable to go insulting perfect strangers is a mystery to me, but it predates voice chat. I've lost count of the number of offensive text chat messages I've had in online games even before I got Live. Jerks will be jerks, and only limit their jerkitude by the medium available to them and risk to their worthless hides.

Of course, "jerks will be jerks" doesn't excuse their behaviour... that's why smart networks have user feedback options, quick-kick consoles for admins, and/or ignore features. Get 'em booted or voicebant, and maybe they'll start taking "risk to their worthless hides" more to heart.

And, by the by, the career of "jerk" is an equal opportunity one... simply from the population playing online these days, the majority right now are male and young and it's worth tackling that. That doesn't excuse the rarer female jerk, but let's worry about that when we're routinely dealing with female jerks.

I wouldn't say that guys only say these sorts of things online. Personally, having worked at a video game shop, I've had guys say degrading things to me all the time. Well, the ones that had the courage to talk to me, anyway. The ones that bother me the most usually say things like, "You don't really play games, do you?" or, "You must play (insert kiddie game here)." Why is it still so unbelievable that girls play games?

The best thing I enjoy about playing online is the anonymity of it. Only my closest gaming buddies know that I'm a girl, and that's only because they'll treat me the same regardless.

angelus-errare

So she calls herself hawty then moans guys treat her in a sexually discriminatory manner? If I called myself Mr. homosexual I would certainly expect jibes. Does anybody usually advertise things that might get them stalked and then moan about it? I mean everybody knows LIVE is full of horny teens - why is anybody shocked when they act retarded? It's not right for them to do so but why bait them? Advertising youself as a hawty and complaining when men want to see/talk to you seems a little stupid.

Also:

"Are you a boy? When are your balls gonna drop?*
They already did. And your mom tells me I have the manliest voice ever. Every night. At least twice."

Wait, you can do my mother? With the lack of male gentalia? That insult really doesnt work coming from a girl, unless our mothers are closet lebians. I think more girls need to game and I think sexism is bad but please, equality is all about equality and not about standing on the high moral feminist horse and complaining about things you stir up yourself and then using rude insults that don't apply to your sex/race/religion.

I'm not trying to be sexist and I'm not trying to flame, but really it seems this woman wants her cake and to eat it too.

EdwinJ85

Now why does xbox live seem to attract the worst of the worst on the internet? It's like playing purely with people who are either hicks or underaged middle school kids screaming on top of their lungs. Other internet games have this problem, but definitely not to this extent. Even if you look for gameplay videos of halo or something of the sort you'll have these bastard fagballs going "omg u suk dik" on the comment section at least 5 fucking times. It just sees XBL games attracts retarded assholes or something. I suppose they all lack the intelligence to install and play games on a PC, which might be the reason why there are less of these bags of douches on other online games.

Waterwings

I know this is probably going to get flak, but most girls I've met on the Net are just as big jerks. Not in the same way, obviously, but when I was playing WcIII online, whenever my teammate would suck, and I would tell them that they sucked, if they were a girl, they would go off on rants to me, regardless of whether I knew their gender or not.

And a lot of them made as many PMS and vagina jokes as the guys made Wang and Fag jokes.

Kirbytheslayer: In-Kirby XMB

I in no way condone it. And find it utterly disgusting the gross disregard these pubesant spoiled brats (young and old) have for people's feelings.

But again, whining about it in a blog with your blog name "hawty" seems a bit reaching for attention IMO. And boy this person will get it more now. Deservingly or not.

But, you do have control over who and what you play with. And are able to use such tools. You cant change people. It wont happen, and this world is getting worse and worse as these younger generations are growing up more spoiled, and less disciplined. So the best thing to do, is take advantage of your tools at hand. And of course writing about it, is one form of a tool.

EnigmaNemesis

Admitedly, my experience is no more scientific than yours.
.
I disagree with your stance however.
.
I see the articles as mesage, that "hey, maybe this is not ok". I know
some people that, upon reading some of the things that they've said say:
"oh my god, is that what I sound like / did I really say that?"
.
And if anything "causes" the problem, I would blame posts like your
own, essentially condoneing it by marginalizing it. Some punk reads a
statement like yours saying "get over it, not a big deal" and they pull
a "me too" and think, "yeah you pansy, get over it", and just go on
doing it even more.
Poorly moderated internet forums are like chronologies of this happening again and again.

brent_w

-Voice Chat (in its entirety); I spend more time muting people in Halo than I do playing.

The phrase will seem so blasé and/or defeatist as of late, but "Welcome to the Internet" is a realistic point that needed to be made. Most people are, in fact, complete assholes. The Internet, in all of its communication-filled glory, only gives said complete assholes the tools to be even better complete assholes. No matter your reputation outside of it, your job, your clothes, your money, there will always at least one jackass bulls-eyeing you.

This often-posted, yet still incredibly true Penny Arcade comic strip only makes this more evident. Thanks to this security blanket/Aegis Reflector/binky (it's slang for a pacifier) called "Anonymity", users are going to continue producing the most vile, vulgar, venomous, vicious material possible because they know that at least one person will be offended.

That's why it's up to willing administrators and moderators to lay down some rules and take up their Banhammers to maintain some sort of order in their individual communities. Without them, let's say, a forum would pretty much be Lord of the Flies -- a bunch of little bastards running around bare ass naked with no sense of direction.

Draconis

@Laser_iCE: Nope :-/ Can't say I ever have. I actually don't taunt or mock people over the internet when playing games. Guess I was just raised differently. Hah.
I personally don't think I could bring myself to insult someone, just because they're a women, over the internet, in a game, voice chat, and what not. Of course, is someone is insulting me, and really just being a idiot about it, I'm not afraid to insult back.
Anyway, new comment.
People here are sometimes acting like its really all mens fault, like its only males that do this. Hmm, but I would disagree with that 100%, because the WORST acting people I've know, at least the worst one, was a Women. Horrible person who just loved to cause problems and what not, nothing compared to some guys I've met... That doesn't mean men are any better sometimes.
But being a jerk has nothing to do with Gender.
Now a real question is why do people feel they can act this way towards others? Obviously, in my opinion, its because they feel they are so important that they need not hold themselves to the rules of behavior the world has. Either that or they're really, really, stupid and think that behaving like that is how one gets ahead in the world... Hah.
I don't have a Xbox.... yet.... will be getting one soon, and I personally think it would be more fun to have a team of guys and girls for online games. Really because hearing the same sounding voice over and over could probably get annoying.
@sweetie55: Humuliation mostly, I'd assume, I've never gotten the idea of it either.
On a completely unrelated note... I think I know more girls that play games seriously then guys. Weird. Haha.
Man... I type too much.

Kaemon

I was playing CoD4 last week and this young guy, I'd say somewhere between 9 and 12 was begging everyone to say "Cockweasel" then they died.

I let this go for a while as everyone was rather poliely telling him to shut up. Eventually I had to ask him, "Anthony..." I said, having learned his name from a friend of his in the game with us, "What exactly is your preoccupation with both cocks and weasesles? Is is some sort of psychological gratification that people are saying what you want oris it more a sexual fantasy ivolving a horny varment?"

His reply, "Your mother sucks cock." to which I could only say "Yeah, she probably has, and so has yours, and any other guys in here, more than likely they have all gone deep on some guys cock and more than likely not even your fathers, he pry doesn't even get her all being the depressing soul she was locked into when your weasel cock loving self was realized."

To which Anthony's friend goes "Anthony, you just got punk'd, stop while you're ahead and leave the cock weasel behind."

Anthony retorts "Never!" quite emphatically, and then I added him to my friends list.

I love that guy now, in all his cock weasel loving glory.

Zilor

First of all, when in the hell did this all of a sudden become so feminist? I understand their some pigs in the online community. There are as just as many in the real world concealing their sexist thoughts towards females. I am a guy who will play anyone on any game with enough skill so I do not care gender you are.

I feel that until there is an substantial number of women out there playing games almost much as guys, you're not going to see as much change as you'd expect.

I think that seeing women of all shapes and sizes, and seeing women who would be considered to be the most feminine looking ones by guys; playing the more hardcore/serious games would be great. That would make any and everybody see that this is not just a guy thing.

All the women who are expressing these ideals are just a few of many women out there. If you really want to change this idea maybe you could find other women who play games or women who don't play but are interested, get them to come together somehow and show that you able to play with the "BIG BOYS" on an even level if not not better.

There are guys who dont mind women at all of course playing games, but less face it there are always going to be assholes who scrutinize like crazy and all anyone can do is ignore them and move on.

bigdude209

Male gamers will stop acting stupid as soon as a majority (not all) of female gamers stop acting like they're special... Which will be never.

"I'm a girl!"

"OMG don't you care that I'm a girl?"

I can sympathize with being frustrated by a bunch of jackasses on Live. I mean, that's basically how any multiplayer game, especially one that's competitive, is going to work; a great majority of the population is going to be spectacularly idiotic, narrow-minded and basically a prick in general. However. The moment we try to sensor one another, and the moment we take genuine offense at the comments of some random tool we've never met before, is the moment I go back to playing single-player games only. I know you have to put up with different kinds of jackassery because you're female, but it's still coming from the same place and we all have to put up with it in one way or another. So deal with it, or play Oblivion. I generally stick to playing Oblivion, but that's just me.

Thrallok

However, a lot of the girls I do hear using their mics while playing Call of Duty 4 on Xbox Live are pretty annoying... Giving us a bad name. It'd be kind of funny if guys knew they were getting their butts handed to them by a girl, though.

monstericreated

I play a variety of games on Live. If you ever look up my gamertag you will probably see that my accomplishments range from Katamari Damacy to Eternal Sonata to Portal to Halo 3. I have a Live account mainly so that I can play Halo 3 over the net.

Yeah, I use the headset so that I can talk to my team and only once have I ever had a "cool" team. They didn't say anything about the fact that I'm a girl and I when I made a "that's what she said" joke they all thought I was cool and we ended up teaming for several more games. A few of them I even added. We worked well together.

Otherwise it has generally sucked on Live. I have even had someone say "Hey, [gamertag], I'm going to rape you." I know that there is no way to track people on Live, but needless to say it made me uncomfortable.

So, guys, think about what you're going to say before you say it. Please.

ArgentAngel

@j13: Did she get targeted and ganged up on in game because she's a girl? See, that was a mistake I did once back on halo 2. I've been used to being ganged up on by all my friends (guys and girls)simply because I'm good at shooters.

It's one thing if you are playing and doing really well but nobody cares because they assume you're a guy. Then for whatever reason if it's found out you are a girl, then all the male players that aren't people you know band together and single you out for death.

Sometimes I would own their asses no problem and other times I'd get fragged relentlessly. After a while it does sour you on a game and it's just not fun anymore to be targeted just because. I even stopped going to arcades 10 year ago back college because it was the same thing. If I wasn't greeted with a "girls can't/don't play" arcade on a SF, MvsC or even KOF, I was simply hit on or gained some creepy "fans".

Funny that I've been putting up with this stuff since the 5th grade and that was back in 1988. You'd think men would evolve and mature at least a little but I guess it's just too much to ask for the Y chromosome. All of which is multiplied 100 fold by the anonymity of the internet. So it's just not worth to even bother playing random matches anymore.

VeritasVierge

@Moonshadow101: In our society saying certain words count as intolerant even if there is no racial or sexual motivation behind it. Its all part of the politically correct mentality.

That and people who get butt hurt about being insulted like to pretend they are intellectually superior and say that certain words are beneath them, and then hop on X-Box live and talk shit as loud as the rest of em... But refrain from using said words because they would be "offensive." But they will have no problem calling someone an assclown or dipshit.

The Amazing Exploding-Man

Personally, I only plug in my mic when my friends are on, or when somebody seriously deserves a verbal beating, prior to/following the virtual beating I lay on them. However, I am a prick, and when I come to the defense of a female gamer, and am then thanked for it, I usually reply something like, "actually, I am hungry for a ham and cheese sandwich" only because, yes, I have said that to girls out in the real world(scary place). (There's also a mute option in halo 3 that I have thoroughly abused)

ResidentPrick

"Are you a boy?" should be taken off the list, especially when you take into consideration the fact that prepubescent boys will most often sound like a girl. That's why animated little boys are usually played by female voice actors (for example: Goku from the original Dragon Ball series, Naruto Uzumaki from Naruto, Bart Simpson from The Simpsons).

josh924
