"Why don't they show the console?" I think Sony are pretty sure that most people already know what the PS3 looks like, and those who don't won't probably go into a shop and describe the one they saw in the advert, they'll just ask for a PS3. "Why don't they show gameplay?" Probably for the same reason other console and game adverts don't (save maybe for some of the Wii games), at least they don't show some "in-game footage" that is just a polished but untrue depiction of the actual in-game graphics.
I think some of these people just wish PS3 would have adverts with some sh**ty metal banging in the background while the trailer voice-over guy says something along the lines of "you have the power to control destiny", with loads of explosions, car crashes and the like. Maybe that works for some in the US and some here in Europe. I for one prefer the slightly edgier adverts we get in the UK, like the David Lynch one for the PS2 (that was over 7 years ago and people still remember it) and the Double Life advert (9 years ago, and still considered one of the best adverts ever) - check them out on youtube actually, they're brilliant!
Not to say the new adverts for the PS3 are as good as that, but I like them, and I wouldn't want to see them be replaced by a loud minute-long clip of noise telling me to get a console cause it is "AAAWSOOOME!"

I've liked the whole 'this is living' series of ads, they went with an abstract idea of how to represent the ps3. Pretty cool with what they did, the ps3 is a hotel and the various tenants represented the games on the ps3. Old washed-up spy, anyone?

However, judging from responses on Kotaku, most people didnt like the abstractness of the ads so the main goal of selling the ps3 technically failed. But they did entertain me once i thought through about the ads content. I've liked the series, but i can see where they failed

As far as the ad's purpose goes . . . it's average. I mean, it lists what it can do, and it's certainly striking, for better or worse, but rather than all those actors, some game footage would've been better in terms of representing what the console can do.

The advert reinforces the idea "it's not for ordinary people" to me, the opposite of Wii and DS adverts.

They take chances and aren't afraid to produce the wierd. We should applaud them for being out of the box and not catering entirely to jacked up youth with an abundance of testosterone. I use my PS3 as a complete media center and love the fleshed out functionality it provides. Sure, it needs some improvements but once you begin to play with the XMB in depth you realize there's a lot of funtionality there now. And we know it will continue to grow. My primary use of my PS3 continues to be games but I can't deny the enjoyment of it's other features.

This ad was cool and well put together. It was a system selling ad and not a game related ad. Understanding it's purpose makes it easier to understand.

It also touches on most of the important areas and doesn't do so in a technical way. All in all I'd have to say it's a pretty decent commercial, albeit strange one.

Even though I'm really fed up by all this new economy- flashy and obscure ads with little or no content. It reminds me of the "Mr. Plow" ad that Homer Simpson commissioned to some poshy artist. Like, whoa :D

I like my PS3, but I hate the department responsible for getting me games and suchlike. SCEE are, in my experience, complete and utter failures. Have you seen the EU PS store update? We only just got the Stranglehold demo! What about the awesome adverts the US gets? Nope, we get more "This is Living". No Everyday Shooter, no SPFHD, we can't even directly bitch to the Execs like on the Playstation Blog. SCEE is an absolute shambles and it's high time there was a serious reshuffle
