Stephen Chow as director I think is perfect.

James Marster as Piccolo, I pictured him with green skin, bald, and a hat and I think he'll work good.

My biggest beef with the casting so far is that Justin Chatwin is a scrawny little pansy that PeeWee Herman could take in a fight. He's no Goku, why even the chick who did kid goku's voice in dragonball could take him in a fight. If I was casting or had any say in it, I'd put Cung Le in as Goku, not because he's asian but because he's an amazing martial artist, charismatic, built like Goku, and I'd say probably one of the best fits of all.

Unless they have a script, the cast and a really really fast shooting schedule (all of which cause bad rush job movies), the sweet spot for a production starting today would be at least December of next year, actually between then and February.

Anyone wondering what the plot is going to be about? Unless this is a kid's movie, I suspect it'll take place in a moderninzed setting, with the possiblilty of these American characters being the reincarnations of the original Japanese ones. Just my speculation. If this movie takes place somewhere in the original anime though, this movie will be utter shit.

I also wonder how the hell they're going to pull Super saiyin off. Can you imagine ANY actor trying turn super saiyin?! HAHAHA!

from the description it sounds more like its based on dragonball, and not dragonball z.

If you do some searching or watching you will know that dragonball was much more of a comedy anime, then a real fighting one.

they emphasized the fighting more in DBZ.

You better start looking for the Dragon Ball Radar now, and shoot all who try to shoot you when you ask Eternal Dragon to kill this movie before filming starts.

This movie is going to tank. I didn't think it would be possible to make a movie worse than Street Fighter or even Double Dragon, but it looks like it's about to be done.

Why aren't the lead characters Asian, granted the Saiyans are aliens and all, but everyone knows they're supposed to be, well, at least Asian-like. Goku was freaking designed around Jackie Chan!

Well, maybe something good will come of this. Once Hollywood is finished f'ing up Akira Toriyama's cash cow, maybe, just maybe, he'll be inspired to make a new adventure. I'm not talking about another GT, which wasn't him, but something along the lines of DRAGONBALL!

Making a movie of HIS story in CG would be a nice touch too.

There's only one way to make a DBZ movie.. and that would have to be completely disconnected with the Anime. Using the same characters is far to much of a cluster-fuck of storylines and personas to fit into a movie.

Sorry, but personally, I think it´s pretty much impossible for this to work out.
American actors speaking in english to make a live action from a japanese animation with stylized characters that not only have an unique art style (Toriyama) but also has his unique humor style that pretty much only works with his art style.

I´m sensing something Street Fighter level, or even worse. They could´ve used something closer to live action... like Ghost in the Shell, Witch Hunter Robin, or at least a dozen other titles.

But meh, Hollywood. Like happened to american comics, it´ll take ´em a long time to get things right.

I didnt know either of the actors mentioned so i looked them up. @Dimipapa: Really? I'm a Marsters fan as well,and I think his role makes the most sense so far. He can do martial arts, he can handle the stresses of having to sit through hours of makeup each day, and he can portray the attitude perfectly.

@CardinalTruth: Before I say myresponse, let me just point out that I never said there shouldn't be asian cast members. To be honest, it really doesn't matter who is what race as long as the movie is decent and the actors can.. well... act!

Now then, There are plenty of asian actors in hollywood. Some even confirmed tryng out for parts in the film. However, just as there is asian talent which is interested in the movie, there is most likely asian talent who have no interest in this film at all. That is another thing you really need to consider.

Also, the "martial arts" setting doesn't always need to mean characters should be asian. In fact, I know many asians who find it stereotypical to even suggest they should know martial arts just because they are asain. That is not to say that most great martial arts films aren't from asia or don't star asian casts.. because quite frankly, we all know that many do.

You also need to consider the fact that both the director and producer are asian, and both have roles in initial casting. If they think an auditioning actor can best fill a role in the film over all other who auditioned, they will choose that person, regardless of race in this type of film.

Again, I agree that having an all asian cast would give the movie a more authentic feel. However, to me, saying that two asian men, who happen to be the producer and the director, having a part in choosing non-asian actors is a slap to the asian communities collective face... it just seems wrong to me. You can't honestly say that they chose white actors just for revenue. If they wanted revenue, they would go for bigger and better names then what they seem to be going for. Also, Another thing to point out are films such as "Hero", "Crouching Tiger", and so many films starring Jackie Chan or Jet Li. Many gain an insane amount of revenue, despite the fact that they are asian.

I don't have high hopes for this, but at the very least I hope they could do justice the style of fighting/action from the anime at least.

Better yet, just make an original concept with that fighting style/power system in mind, and leave the mythology/characters of DBZ alone.

I think they should've casted asian actors to play the lead roles. Being a manga obviously the characters would be drawn to look for asian. Collin Chou for Goku? Wu jing as Vegeta? Gordon Lui playing Piccolo? The last suggestion is strictly based on the fact that they're both bald.... Heh, as big of a Buffy/Angel fan I am I just don't know about James Marsters playing Piccolo.

Stephen Chow for producer is alright, (Kung Fu Hustle was a great movie). Maybe sign Tsui Hark as well for co-producer or a co-director role. James Wong I dunno, haven't seen enough of his work other than The One and that was so-so. Donnie Yen's recent films have had awesome action scenes. The brutality in some of the fights (eg. SPL and Flash Point) I feel would fit better with DB's style of action than say if the fights were choreographed by Yuen Wo Ping. Although I wouldn't mind him either.

I don't want to go into any racial debates here since this is a gaming blog, but to be perfectly honest, there aren't enough Asian American or Asian actors getting work in Hollywood as it is, and to have a project like this that is based off of something created by a Japanese writer and based on a Chinese legend be acted by non-Asian actors is almost kind of a slap in the face from Hollywood to the Asian community. You can argue all you want about the specifics of how Goku is not technically Asian or even human, but the fact that the kind of setting and culture that he's portrayed in is so inherently Asian makes casting an Asian actor a much more natural choice for Goku. If you forget all that you know about DBZ (when the idea that Goku was a Saiyan was introduced) and just look at the original Dragonball story, which seems to be what this movie is based on, it'd be pretty silly for you to assume Goku is anything but Asian, from the clothing that he's wearing to the high amount of emphasis that's place on the martial arts. The only reason for casting non-Asians is to cater to an American audience, and as great of a reason as that is to generate revenue, Hollywood needs to grow some balls and stop with the yellowface.

@sinny: No, the Kid Goku concept was based loosely on the "Monkey King" legend (more specifically it is loosly based off the the "Sun Wukong" ledgend as presented in the classic Chinese story "Journey to the West") as was the basic concept for the original Dragonball story. However, the more the Dragonball story pushed forward, the more it broke away from the story of the legend it was based off of.

Also, The Monkey King or "Sun Wukong" wasn't asian. He was a monkey...

@sinny: Why do they "need" to be asian? There are many talented non-asian actors/actresses out there. While I agree that having an asian cast would give it a more "authentic" feel, I can't agree that an asian cast would automatically make it a better movie. There are horrible asian actors as well you know... And, no, the anime design of the characters does not portray them as "asian". Akira Toriyama has even said himself that the he believes his character designs appeal to both eastern and western audiences so well because there are really no racial distinctions on the main characters.

Anyways, no one can deny the major impact that the Dragonball series has made in the world of animation. Many famous artists and animators are also self-proclaimed dragonball fans. Without The dragonball series, many of todays great animes may not even exist.

If you're not a fan of anime in general, that's your view. Don't look down on people who are. I'm sure there are many things you like that I probably don't, and honestly, I couldn't care less. Whatever you like or don't like, that's your business and no one has the right to judge you for it.

They never mentioned the letter "Z" in the article and they even said Piccolo was Goku's main enemy (something that doesnt happen in DBZ but in the original DB where Goku is younger).

I'm actually looking forward to this.

I'm a proud DBZ fan (Japanese only though).

Goku is supposed to be goofy and well.. act kinda gay and dumb. I thik the casting choice is good enough for it. Also, at the point in the series the movie seems to be based off of, Goku wasn't all that muscular.

I really think James Marsters can pull off his role as well. Mind you, his voice isn't as deep as I think it should be... he can still pull it off. I have faith.

Stephen Chow?!?! How can this movie not be at least worth the cost of a movie ticket? If it is half as good as his past films, DBZ will kick enough ass to get my money.
