I'm an adult, and I'm perfectly capable of deciding what is appropriate for myself. I find the "flavour" of the original version to be much more aesthetically pleasing than the translated version. When I'm playing an RPG of any kind, that's what I'm looking for. Flavour.

Back in the good old days of Interactive Fiction (Text based adventures for you young fellas...ok fine, I'm only 25.) the only thing we had was words. So those words had to convey exactly what was going on, and in what context. In the translated version, we lose all of the motivation of the characters, and hence we lose the connection that one is supposed to gain in an RPG setting.

You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door. There is a small mailbox here. Humans have always hated dwarves and elves. [Fixed]

There are space constraints and timing issues. The same happens in Japanese subtitles for English movies, basically none of the wit/charm/humor/nuance of the original makes it into the subtitles. But the same is true for just about any subtitles in any language, because of the constraints and because of cultural differences, etc. Some jokes in American movies are so culturally specific that Japanese audiences would never understand, so the translator completely changes the joke...

I believe this doesn't happen though because production companies depend on the sales to parents of younger children to purchase the titles. How much money would Rockstar have made with GTA if rules were mroe strictly enforced and parents better informed?
I believe that those of us who grew up with games will be better models as parents and citizens because we know that while all video games are for entertainment, not all are for children. It really just takes an informed public and despite video games having been saturating in the market, its not until those who have long been exposed to them educate our kids and public to the differences in ratings that we will see more adult-oriented and focused titles along including special edition titles.

Stores won't stock unrated games as a general policy for fear of the political/media backlash. Publishers won't sell a patch that unlocks adult content for the same reason.

Fans will never be able to do a Fan translation because they wont have the voice over to match the new text.

I don't know... a lot of the profanity in the game seemed ill placed and stilted, though that could be because of the less than stellar voice acting.
