@Furious_Liver: People get out when DNA evidence exonerates them. So what would the problem be if DNA evidence convicted them? Everyone makes mistakes, sure, but it still takes 10 years+ for someone to actually die, plenty of time to correct the mistake.

A man and his wife(girlfriend?) came in around closing time and waited for the shop to empty, they then pulled a knife on my friend and stabbed him once in the side. They bound his arms and legs with ductape and beat him up some more. They stole a few things and left. It wasn't until early the next morning that he was found by the opening store manager. He had bled to death overnight.
The couple was caught a few days later and I believe there total take was a tv a few cell phones and less than a couple hundred dollars from the register.
To kill someone for any reason is wrong, but to do something so senseless for so little gain, is crazy.
There got to be a special place in hell set to extra crispy for people that do this sort of thing.
anyway, this is a sad story and i feel for the guys family.

However, do not assume that torture or medieval methods such as hanging, drawing and quatering someone will dissuade murder. It's how they answered most crimes in the dark ages, and while it may seem there is more murder in today's world, that is because we have an advanced media network that informs us of as many cases as possible. Back in the days of torture and brutal public execution, there was much more crime, and the execution was daily and routine. Crime is coming down, the justice system, while it has individual failures, does do it's job.

And what decides the execution crime? In some countries, being raped (ie being the victim) is enough to get you executed. Execution is immediate and committed: no going back if you find out it was a wrong ID. And while the some families of those who have been lost will want the bloodiest revenge possible, this is why the courts exist. Revenge and mob justice isn't justice. Justice is what society provides through the courts. Anything else is anarchy, and generates feuding.

Lets just send our wishes to the family. Let the courts deal with the murderer.

The ancient purpose behind prison was to stimulate time for people to think about the crimes they did. It was never to physically torture someone, since that's illegal. Why do you think prisons have guidelines and have to provide stimulation like television, food, exercise, etc.? Although some of the stricter-security prisons don't have this because the inmates have a higher tendency to take advantage of it to hurt others or escape; some people even live in solitary confinement for a long time. Prison isn't in existance to hurt people, it's in existance to confine people for the actions they've done. Many people change from their ways when they leave prison, because they realize 10 more years of confinement away from the world, eating nothing but cafeteria food, is not worth the crime. Many people who spend all the time in prison, have time to think, and forgive others, and forgive themselves, and begin to heal themselves. Prison is kind of like a time-out. Not a place where people are to be tortured.

He came out of the closet as soon as he graduated high school, and got himself to lose 100 lbs within a year. He was living with his partner at his dad's house, and they were saving up to get their own apartment. I realize his sexuality does not matter; it would just as tragic if he was recently engaged to a girl, and moreso if they just had a kid. To deal with all that while living in the south, then to get a job doing something you love, gaming, and to have this happen.. It really strikes a chord with me as a gay'mer.

His dad took comfort in knowing that his son died at a time when he had never been more happy. I'm not sure I could be that strong.

Apparently the kidnapper fled and by the time the police found the car the wife had suffocated due to her bindings.

Its a lot easier to suffocate in such situations too due to panic / stress.

To lessen crime you need to adress the reasons for it, not just treat the symptoms.

When you speak of countries in Africa and countries in the Middle East that execute criminals, a great many of them require simple accusations of wrongdoing and the guy has his head lopped off.

The key is to mesh brutal executions with a decent judicial system; one that presumes innocence before guilt, and one that takes into account little to no circumstantial evidence. Someone found guilty due entirely to a confession shouldn't be executed as this A) encourages people turning themselves in and B) deals with false confessions to avoid heftier punishment.

But once he's been IDed by several witnesses, there is fingerprint and/or ballistics evidence present, as well as evidence of sanity and premeditation, execution should definitely be on the table.

You're statistically more likely to be shot to death living in D.C. than serving for six years in Iraq. Given, this doesn't take into account IEDs or suicide bombers, but it's still a frightening statistic.

Public torture is a fantastic way of preventing crime. If someone knows that killing someone means they'll be drawn and quartered, they'll be far less inclined to do so than if they'll spend 15 years in a comfy cell not having to even work for a living.

I wouldn't apply this to crimes of passion, but an armed robbery is clearly premeditated.

So if the death penalty is necessary and that is for a jury to decide then it should be quick as we should be merciful even in this act.

I hear ya completely. A family member of mine was murdered senselessly about 4 years ago, and the asshole that did it got away with 35 years...he still has a chance at life then, his victim doesn't. You're absolutely right, they need to be tortured and humiliated and given weeks of agony. It infuriates me when people try to claim "prisoner's rights"....why the hell do you think they're in prison??!
