Oh, Cute story!!: Many years ago my brother and I got an NES for xmas. It was my first game console. Because we would always play the game together, EVERY game that we played we called Player 1 "Mario" and Player 2 "Luigi," even if it didn't have mario in it. Why? Because that was how it ended up on Mario Bros. which was teh first game I ever played. Whenever you popped in the cartridge and played 2 player it would always say "mario" in the top left and "luigi" in the top right....so I figured thats what the controller ports were called!

Since then I've had a SNES, gameboy, N64, gamecube, ps2, ps3, and wii. (Not that I have anythign against MS. I had a ps2 so didn't see the point on the orig xbox and because I liked the ps2 so much I figured I'd bite the bullet and get a PS3. Not that 360 is bad, but I personally see more potential in the PS3)

But seriously, here's how you break into game journalism:

1. write mock reviews. LOTS of them. Have a close friend or relative really help polish them to a nice shine. LOTS of them. Study the style of Chris Hudak or Dan Morris. These are arguably two of the best writers in the business. I am neither. I swear.

2. pick up an old EGM or Gamepro and totally rewrite their every review with your scores, BUT, in their odd "voice." The older the issue the better.

3. pick some far out title (say Mass Effect) and write a mock preview. All real facts. Dig deep. Compare it to famous sci-fi RPGs. Do your homework.

4. Draft a clever cover letter. 1 PAGE ONLY. Less is more. Don't list job experience, don't drone on and on. Just a quick little rabbit punch to the chin. Make it funny, make sure it has more than one source of "contact" info.

5. Save these all as .PDFs and burn to a CD. Write, in sharpie, "Resume" on this CD. Mail it to EVERY gaming publication EXCEPT blogs.

6. Send it to CNN as well. Seriously.

I'm 36, used to be professional jazz musician, but I've been a game developer for almost 10 years now (crunching at this moment actually) as a level artist/world builder/asset artist on various projects/companies. I recently moved into a position that I really love which is lighting/fx, whoo!

I grew up around "pong" on a black and white tv, then onto the atari 2600, vic 20, c64, genesis, nes, etc, all the way to the current console bunch.

What really got me into wanting to be a dev was playing the Ultima series back in the day (III and IV especially).

I'm still pretty excited by the potential for the medium and can't hardly wait to see what is around the corner. :)

Have been gaming since like my childhood (not on Console but on the most popular personal computer of all time the C=64 that my dad got as soon as it was released).

I did a stint on the dark side for a few years (got involved in the C=64 warez scene from 1988-1993).

Got my first amiga in 1990 (an Amiga 500), then got an amiga 4000 in 1994 (after C= collapsed).

I got my first console a CD32 shortly after ;-) (hey it was liquidation of alot of C= stuff).

Then got an amazing computer in 1996 a BeBox, yes those crazy dual processor machine from Be inc. Then got another one in 1997 and did some development on BeOS until Be inc. collapsed 8-(.

Finally got into the real world of console in january 2001 with my PS2 (yes the chubby one!) which I still have and in good working order. Nowaday I play on my "REAL" 60gb. PS3 which I got just after E3 and the price drop, since I had learn it was out of production. I didnt want a gimp version!

And of course I am a regular reader of Kotaku ;-), it is alway open on my desktop at home. Sent a few tips and once was lucky to get my silly Wiii pre-launch Wal-Mart youtube video to be posted on here!

Sooner or later I'll get a current generation console. I'm tempted to go with a PS3, as most of my favorite games of the past ten years have come out on the PSX or PS2, but with one or two exceptions, there aren't any games that make me want to drop many hundreds of dollars on a system. Still holding out hope that Fumito Ueda or someone will make a game that will necessitate the purchase.

I just turned 23 this year and attending college still. Growing up with a PC and games for most of my life, I can't say that I have much of one. lol
I need to focus on getting my A.A. degree and get transferred to a better university more. :( Only problem is that I can't get enough of gaming, and your site is not helping me with old classics, new games, and background stories.

By far, Kotaku has been the most entertaining and informative gaming site I've been to. :) Keep it up!

I'm 29, single, and living near Seattle. Most of my professional experience so far has been contracting as a software tester at Microsoft, but I am currently between jobs due to the break-in-service policy for contractors at MS. I'd like to get away from contracting and into something more permanent, but I'm not sure that's going to happen at this point.

In my spare time, I do a fair bit of wandering around, but I also have a decent collection of game systems. Currently, I have an Xbox 360, a Wii, 2 DSes (one regular, one lite), a GBA, a Dreamcast, a Saturn (Japanese model), a Genesis, and an arcade cabinet with 8 boards. I tend to be somewhat of a finicky niche gamer, and particularly enjoy obscure Japanese shmups (my arcade cabinet currently has Battle Bakraid in it, but some of my other boards include Dodonpachi, Raiden Fighters and Strikers 1945.)

I also keep a blog (link here) which I update on an infrequent basis (whenever I can come up with stuff to post.) I do occasionally write about game related topics, but I'll cover just about anything if I feel like it, with the exception of politics (I don't have nearly enough patience for that topic.)

Own a variety of consoles - when i was a kid we had the old commodore 64, and the really old atari's with the cartridges :-D then an atari ST and then since then i've had the NES, SNES, PSX, PS2 and now the 360 Elite :-) in terms of handhelds i have a GBA Micro and DS Lite too. I also own far too many games and don't have enough time to play/finish them all at the moment! :-/

Like all sorts of games, mainly rpgs and fighting games, though like action and shooters too - basically I'll play anything if i enjoy it. Wont go into a long list of games here as that'd just take forever to get through!

Otherwise, when I'm not servicing computer related issues at work, I'm at home playing games on my gaming PC or 360 or Ps2. >:3 I need to go out more, an i use to before I got this job back in July, but lately I'm just to tired. I've been attempting to get into shape, an are alot more toned now than I was a few months ago, even have put on some muscle weight. Still pretty underweight as far as the average goes for people my height.

No set plans for the future at the moment besides get back into community college an finish my AA before trying anything else.

When I was a tyke, I had a NES, then a SNES, and in high school, a PS1 (and yes, I also played a lot of PC games too). In college I didn't have a TV, so only gamed on the PC (mostly FPS). I don't think I've done any online gaming since my freshman year. Last Oct (06), my office-mate introduced me to Guitar Hero, and I felt compelled to pick up a PS2. I've since transitioned to nearly console-only gaming. I still keep up (more-or-less) with the HL series, and that office-mate is now trying to get me to play Psychonauts (I've had his copy of it sitting on my desk for the last couple of months).

My wife (whom I've known since high school, and who is also a grad student) never gamed until we married. She plays a number of DS games regularly, but has no coordination whatsoever. No action games for her. And no kids either! Not until we finish school. And even then, I'm not sure I feel qualified for that whole child-rearing thing.

While I love me some Mario 64, and there's no questioning the fact that it had the best wall jump, there's no denying that Super Mario Sunshine (love it or hate it) perfected the game mechanic. And I only suspect Mario Galaxy to have an even better wall jump.

I'm 20 years of age and female. I was born in West Palm Beach Florida on May 3rd. I'm from Boston Massachusetts but I'm currently living in Savannah Georgia.

I'm a junior at Savannah College of Art and Design. I'm currently studying Interactive Design and Game Development. I hope to become a character artist when I go out into the industry.

The current systems I own are Dreamcast, Playstion 2, and and Xbox 360. I'm not a big fan of first person shooters but I do like Bioshock. The very first game system I played was the Nintendo Home Entertainment System. My two most favorite games of all time are The Sims (2) and Grand Theft Auto.

Other than gaming I like to draw, hang out with friends, and shopping. I'm not a big fan of "chick-flicks" but I love a good comedy. I love watching the sunrise on the beach, fine wine and dancing till my legs are tired.

I mostly invested in Nintendo consoles - NES, Game Boy, SNES, N64, Game Boy Color, GBA, GameCube, DS Lite and next month I'm getting a Wii on "St. Mario day". Oh, and this year I bought on eBay an american SNES Junior and a japanese Super Famicom really cheap. But I also had a ZX Spectrum, as well as a Mega Drive and a Saturn (which I still have). I must be an extremely rare specimen in Portugal, since I don't own any Sony console.

I started to get into games almost 20 years ago when I lived in a small town in eastern Portugal - there was a café across the street where my parents went everyday after they were back from work and there was a games room in the back, I would alway spend some 15-20 minutes there playing on their pinball, Hogan's Alley, Shinobi and Double Dragon machines - I was too small to see the screen or reach the controllers so I had to climb to a chair and obviously all the other kids (who were much older and bigger) would make fun of me...but then would shut up because I was often better than them. And I also played lots of Out-Run, Hang On and Space Harrier when I came to Lisbon.

But this is getting a little too big, the most important stuff has already been told! Oh yeah, and Kotaku is the best thing since the 16-bit consoles =D

I still love old school, but I play alot of newer stuff as well, the only consoles in the last 2 generations I haven't owned were DC (my bro had one so I've gotten my time on it), PSP and PS3, may get a PS3 at some point mid next year if money is still good from freelance.

Suffice to say currently my life is a race against time. But that's fine, I enjoy it and mix everything together. At school I write articles, at work i do schoolwork, and in my spare time get games played to write about later on. It's difficult, but very fun.

I'm also in southern California, so like many people I evacuated early on, and now I'm writing an article on why I brought one console over the other two. I think it's an interesting psychological thing to do, so why not talk about it.

Huge fan of Kotaku, as well as Gizmodo and Lifehacker, and follow all three sites religiously, and applied to be an intern here at Kotaku and over at Lifehacker. Then applied to be the weekend writer for Gizmodo. Most people think I'm crazy for doing stuff like I am, but if you want to get anywhere, you've got to put in the time and effort, and I damn well intend to.

Interest-wise, I'm a sucker for old movies; all the way from Georges Méliès to David Lean, from Louise Brooks to Mae West, from Busby Berkeley to Breakin' 2. Maybe it's correlative to my love of history, I don't know. A lot of what people consider old, boring and pedantic is often a lot more fun, exciting and intelligent than they probably realize (well, except maybe in the case of D.W. Griffith).

Gaming-wise, I heart Shmups, DMC-style Action games, Fighters and to a lesser extent these days, RPGs.

I'm 20 years old, and a 3rd year Computer Science major at the University of California - Berkeley. I lived the first 10 years of my life in Oregon, and went to middle school and high school in Princeton, NJ before coming out to California for college. In addition to Computer Science, I've been studying Japanese for about 6 years now, and am planning to move to Japan for a few years after I graduate.

I'm currently working part-time as an intern at a systems management and security software company. Basically, they make software that helps manage giant networks, on the order of 100,000 computers. I'm currently making various little utilities for them, like a network topology map generator, and a Windows Vista gadget to monitor your network.

I'm hoping to at some point get into the video game industry as a programmer, and will probably be looking for an internship at a game company in the SF bay area this summer.

I've owned most major systems that have come out over the years. My current setup is a Wii, PS3, 360, NES, N64, and a Dreamcast. I'm mostly into RPGs, adventure games, and basically any major Nintendo release, but I like anything that's done really well, or is really unique.

I am a hardcore gamer most of the time, mainly RPGs and action/adventure type stuff. Basically the first two games I played are what I love the most. My roommate has about as many consoles as I do but his are all Japanese allowing for a massive collection where we both cross-play each other's systems (and gives me access to a PSP and DS).

Other than that I work as a chef part-time so I can pay rent and buy games. More than that gaming is something that has started some friendships for me and something I like to do socially (even when I played Okami or Zelda).

My favorite game of all time is Final Fantasy IV (which was FF II in the U.S.). Love the plot, love the music, love the gameplay, it's really a total package and an awesome game for its time.

However, my favorite game series of all time is the Zelda series, without question. From the original NES game to Twilight Princess and Phantom Hourglass, no other series has had such consistently high quality and fun, engaging gameplay. Thank you, Miyamoto-san!

I have a master's in nonprofit management and work for a nonprofit that helps grassroots organizing groups in low-income NYC communities. It's awesome work.

I own a PS3, Wii, PS2, DS, and a now-unused Gameboy Micro. I generally love RPGs, action/adventure games, puzzle games and platformers. I really suck at shooters and FPS's, and sports games hold no interest for me at all, except for Mario Kart. Currently, I am battling a very serious addiction to WoW, which I only started playing in March. My main is a mage, but I just rolled a warrior and am loving it. There is no hope for me - my girlfriend considers herself a WoW widow.

Bad spelling and grammar is one of my pet peeves, which makes the internet difficult for me sometimes. ;-)

I've been reading Kotaku for several years now, and agree with everyone that says it's consistently the best coverage and best commenting community around. Hats off to Crecente & co!

These days I'm more of a casual gamer because of time restraints. Career, Wife and four kids and all the activities that go along with that take a big chunk of time that might otherwise be spent gaming. I remember a year or so ago, mentioning in comments here that I am a casual gamer, and being told by a fellow commentor that if I was truly casual, I wouldn't be here. So I guess I'm hardcore casual, because I check in here several times a day.

My weekday 8-5 has me as IT Manager for a construction company in Tacoma, WA, managing cool things like GPS Bulldozers... and someday, I would love to see a good remote interface to make that truly as cool as my imagination originally thought. Something like a Halo or even Excite Truck front end that I can do from my desk, while several miles away the 'dozer performs my every move... Anyone out there who wants to develop that, I'd be more than happy to beta test!

Parents got an NES when my sister and I were little, but it was just as much for them as it was for us. My dad would stay up all night playing tetris, getting the entire castle to take off. Through most of grade school, I my parents never got us many games, so as soon as I got my first part-time job, I became a compulsive videogame buyer, lasting through my freshman year of college. Some highlights of hilariously regrettable purchases along the years: Wetrix (N64), The Thing (PS2), Robot Alchemic Drive (PS2), and Egg Mania: Eggstreme Madness (cube). Somewhere on my old computer is a txt file documenting all the awful games I bought and how quickly I sold them back.

Currently enjoying Orange Box, Halo3, and various Live Arcade games, and busting out the Wii when friends are over.

A friend my mine got me into Kotaku and it's only been a few months since I started reading this but I really enjoy it. A long time gamer, used to play a lot of PC games but now I play just as much 360. Enjoys competitive online FPS and RTS games.

As far as my gaming history goes, I got my first NES when I was 8 and a Genesis when I was 11. I have played so many consoles over the year, including the obscure, and not terribly successful "Vectrex" system, which at the time I thought was pretty kick-ass. I was a huge GameCube fan, and loved it as much as the other 50 people who bought one. Right now, I'm mostly an Xbox360 player, but I do make sure to save some love for my Wii so it doesn't get lonely. My favorite games right now are Cooking Mama, Shadowrun, Halo 3 and The Orange Box. My favorite games of all time are Bionic Commando for the NES, Civilization for the PC, the first Halo for the Xbox, and the arcade game Black Tiger (Capcom). I love Kotaku, and read it every few hours to fill my spare time at work (of which there is a shit ton).

I probably read about video games more often then play it, i can't wait till next year when i get to move out of the university accomodations and get my own internet connection (I can't play any pc games online and i have to go through all hell to get x-box live working, plus theres no wi-fi so i can forget about ds and wii online), i can't stand people my age who think that all there is to life is drinking and myspace, which is a shame because that rules out at least four fitfh's of the english race thats my age.

Oh and i honest to god have a fear of crisps (Potato chips i believe is what americans call them?)

I'm a 17 year old college freshman studying in Case Western, Cleveland. I was born in the US but I have an Arab heritage. I'm hoping to major in biology for pre-med but I'm having a hard time already. As for my gaming preferences? I don't care. If you give me a game, I will play it. I don't judge it by the platform it's on.

My gaming time has been on the decline lately, but I try to get at least an hour a day with my DS. The rest of the time I can dedicate to gaming is divided between my PS2 and Wii.

Aside from gaming, I'm really into sneaker culture, indie/hardcore music scene, and freelance writing.

Originally raised on pinball machines, I got hooked on video games after seeing SMB and Gyromite on a friend's brand new NES. Was strictly a Nintendo fan until my wife bought me a PS2 for Christmas one year. I'm now a fan of all, though Nintendo systems hold a dear place for me.
