I saw "Dan in Real Life" this weekend...had some funny moments and some interesting stuff but was mostly bad. Extraordinarily cliche'd, felt like I'd seen it before- that somebody had just spliced bits of other movies together and maybe thrown in a new twist on an old joke or two that they thought would hide the fact that it was a re-hash.

Right along with everyone else...there's been little in the theaters that has made me very interested in going.

There ARE plenty of awesome movies out there, but in limited playings or not available in the theaters- their releases aren't pushed as much as the bullcrap Hollywood churns out.

Use google, find good "off circuit" movies, buy good movies from amazon... Stuff like Oldboy / Black Snake Moan or even Stardust. (For my taste... I'm sure there are movies for anyones taste "off circuit".)

How not to:
Bitch about it in kotaku and name only popcorn movies like Superbad/RushHour/Simpsons. K'mon .. even hollywood got better then that.

The only reason we go out to put up with the $10 and the shrieking children running up and down the aisle and the teenagers/college kids yammering through the whole movie on their cell phones is if:

-- the flick is super highly rated,

-- has someone in it we totally love (and is also a good movie),

-- or is a big special effect spectacular that you really need the big screen and the THX sound,

-- and maybe if it's a movie that you'll totally be out of it if you don't see it right away.

Otherwise, we have a video store down the street, and satellite, and a 51" HD. Kick back on the couch with dinner or cheap snacks, pause or rewind it, etc.

It isn't piracy, it isn't video games and it isn't the economy...

MAINSTREAM AMERICAN CINEMA has been so over-tested and PG-13'd to death that few movies have any soul left by the time they reach theaters.

As a movie going audience we've figured this out and we won't be duped more times than we have to. Of course we'll buy the same movie several times on DVD and you'll still bitch that we're stealing from you but you'll still keep pulling the same stupid tricks to screw us over! (Here is a hint of how you can get us back into theaters... make movies, not products and if you keep letting Jessica Alba act, make sure she is naked in the movies because I'm not paying $10 to watch her ham it up with Dane Cook (who I like) but I'll pay $100 to see her naked and rubbing herself raw! GET IT!!!)

The last movie I saw in the theatres was 300. And even then, I thought it was ok->good, mostly because I was with a bunch of testosterone-touting teammates.

But Hollywood has stunk for me for years. The one movie I was really looking forward to seeing (Spiderman 3) I knew was going to suck long before I saw it, to the point where I just passed on seeing it in the theaters. Now the only movie I'm really looking forward to is The Dark Knight, but everything else is either recycled or just bad, like eating a KFC bowl.

Halo or not, there ain't much at the movies to see, so why would people see anything?

Hopefully the trend goes in favor of gaming permanently, because Roger Ebert's idea that games can't be art (though many games are far superior artistically than even the best movies) pisses me off.

And, most games have more replay value than your favorite DVD, and you can fill a game with 16 or more people online for an experience that is far more satisfying (to me) than watching the newest episode of Heroes and discussing it with 15 other people.

Also, good luck fitting 16 people in a room to watch Lord of the Rings without long breaks, body odor, and almost everybody wanting to watch something else. Or, without 50 people you don't care to associate with, in a movie theater.

With gaming, you can expect people you will either enjoy, or love to hate.

And really, you all can't say that game developers aren't guilty of churning out the same cliched story lines, tired combat systems, and terribly written dialogue. Yes, we've seen a lot of good games recently, and many more on the way, but this industry certainly has its fair share of total crap.

as for the article at hand, maybe if they'd stop making terrible movies that are ridiculously overpriced, people would go see them more. Hollywood has no one to blame but itself. the only movie this year I really looked forward to seeing was Transformers, and even that wasn't that good. I kinda want to see Saw IV too. other than that, most everything else gets a pass from me.

Its not Halo 3 causing low ticket sales, its an abundance of crap in theatres. Outside of the Kingdom and Resident Evil (and those got bad reviews) there's nothing worth paying for in theatres at the moment.

Also, there is a short companion film available for free on iTunes (and probably other places) called Hotel Chevalier. It stars Jason Shwartzman and Natalie Portman, and is also pretty good. You also get so see her ass in a very sexy pose.

The theatre is dying, at least in it's current form. Perhaps they could try to curb the insane prices for food and drinks and high price tickets to get more people in the door. And here is a thought, more diverse movie selection???

Before that I saw RE3: Extinction, it was terrible. Before that I saw RH3, which was... terrible. Both were entertaining enough for me but they were both pretty terrible. As well as Pirates 3. Hmmm... I see a trend.

Also, I won't get started on how games have made watching tv and movies a complete bore for me, but hollwood also needs to recognize that the internet is where people can learn about the shit they shovel out before having to pay money for it. In the past, we only had marketing and paid-off reviewers to "herd" us to their films. A smart, informed consumer is bad news for shitty products.
