I was going to buy a "Falcon" 360 for the better chip and HDMI port, but now that we know "Jasper" is on the way, i'm just going to wait for that one instead. My current (2nd replacement) 360 is holding up pretty well, so far.

I want a 360 pretty badly, but It's bad enough I struggle to buy the system, let alone I would never be able to afford getting it fixed. Sorry Microsoft, But just like a car, Id never take it off the lot without knoing its not going to crap out on me.

My original 360 made march last year is sitting here waiting for UPS (ok, waiting for me to find a decent box as we don't get coffins sent to us in the UK!)...

I have zero faith that what I get back will actuall last more than a month before dying again. MS should nail it once and for all and say for certain they can fix it on returned and new consoles, otherwise it's just pointless carbon footprinting of the couriers when we may aswell just do the x-clamp fix ourselves and hope for the best (seems about the same rate of 'fixing').

Good to see there fixing it up a bit more,although since my first 2 xbox's crashed ive had no issues at all for over a year. Especially amazing considiring I have the old design and I keep them on 24/7 with games usually spinning.(as I do with most consoles.)

I think its just the wierd nature of things,in anycase, hopefully people will seethe console for what it is now, a good place to play the best games.(or atleast better versions of massproduced games.)

i was reading this just last night, and even if the cooler GPU is a big part of what's supposed to solve the problem, i feel fairly confident the falcon's gonna manage. the x-box forums have a number of people with the halo-boxes with the falcon in 'em, and have all commented on how much cooler and quieter they run. If the disc drive isnt scratching things, and the glue's not melting/box isnt an oven, i think i trust it to hold its own for the remainder of its life cycle.

..that, or i just really want an elite in the next month or so. Ive held out this long, august is a bit too far tho.

Sweet the end of RROD is near... I wonder how much those chips cost though... 65nm is not cheap at all! Hell by the time it comes out i will have to go get one. The vacuum cleaner thing really turns me off.

It should be pointed out that this sort of thing happens all the time with computer hardware. It's not necessarily indicative that the previous model was faulty, just that they can make more of them cheaper now.

@Truepatriot: according to wikipedia, the fat PS2 (not including slimline models) has had 11 motherboard versions. the wiki entry for xbox didn't discuss versions, but i'm pretty sure there were 8 versions, as follows: 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, & 1.6b.

@Negat1ve: The reason to 'keep coming with less nm' is that the smaller the chip is, the cheaper it gets to produce (as well as the less heat it puts out, which matters even if your system isn't poorly designed; it means the fan gets quieter and it uses less electricity). So in other words it makes 360s cheaper to buy, cheaper to run (and less environmentally damaging too), quieter, and more reliable. What's not to like? (And Sony are doing the exact same thing, but it attracts less attention because their system didn't have a flawed design to start with. I'm not sure whether Nintendo are, or need to; their chips are probably pretty small already and I'm sure there's a point where you can also save some money by using the older production plants.)

@BrainofJTD: What they 'should have done one-two years ago' is ensure the system had adequate cooling and no design flaws that cause it to break under heavy load. You can't blame that for not using a chip production process that wasn't even available when the system launched.

I don't doubt that it'll happen eventually but we are still on our first 360 that we camped out for on release day. It's been holding up to the Halo 3 play great as well. No red rings.

I did notice that it sometimes has trouble deciding if the system is laying vertical or horizontal though. The 360 sits vertical but I can watch the system sometimes and the little green light around the circle (that shows which control is on) will switch between the position 1 and 2 spot over and over. Like it would be in the 1st player spot if it was laying horizontal but it looks like the second player because it's vertical. Anyone else had this happen before?

To be serious though, why keep coming with less nm? If you keep publishing different types then the consumer doesn't know which one to buy! And it sucks for the consumer who , like me , bought their console at the launch and don't profit from the 64nm and stuff.

A few weeks ago my 4th 360 Red Ringed on me. When my "coffin" showed up I did the usual ritualistic packing of it and went out to a UPS store. Well I forgot to drop it off, and wound up in the middle of east bumfuck no where. I found a local shop with a UPS sign in the window that said they were a drop off center. So I walk in and a guy who worked there, who was maybe 50 something says to me out of the blue… Ahhh it die on you? I said excuse me? He says, the 360 did it die on you? He says, I can tell by the box. I said, no shit how many of these do you see in a week in a town like this? He says about 4-5 a week.

That right there my friends tells me all I need to know about the failure rate of the 360 hardware. Though I look forward to getting mine back, I'm sure one of the "refurbished units I have been sent sported these supposed "heat sink" improvements.

This time I demanded that the customer service rep from MS note on my account that I want a "BRAND NEW 360" not another refurb. I'll let you know how that works out when I get mine back…

Seems like I head this stuff before from MS. Wake me in a year when we can see the failure rate. Unless everyone was fired this would be the same engineering department that delivered the original xbox360.

I'll put my trust in broad levels of internet feedback. MS can't be trusted to understand thermal issues.

well id be interested in this but microsoft have already lost my custom and even though i intended to re-purchase a 360 after microsoft got their shit together i find myself thinking "why bother?" after all most of the 360 games i want will be on PS3 too.

The way i see it microsoft still owe me 2 months of xbox live and a copy of gears of war.

I've noticed a sharp decline in the RRoD posts. This could just be fanboys pretending to have 360's getting bored. Or it could be 360's actually RR'ing less often.

In any case, they obviously were going to fix it eventually. Now we are there, about a year later than it should have taken them. (well, they shouldn't have had a problem in the first place but that's a different story)

@Infradead: Well, the defective x-clamp method has been redesigned on new lots of 360's which was the RRoD. The heat coming off the GPU cause the mainboard to warp which caused the x-clamp to cut into the board and also loosen the GPU. News of the shrinking GPU and Microsoft ordering ODD's from Lite-On pretty much means that the 360 will have all it's design woes corrected.

I really wanted the 360, but every month it's the same news: It'll take them years to get their finger out.

With Assassin's Creed coming out next month, and no sign of MS releasing the comlete hardware any time soon, I finally broke down and bought a PS3 today.

For some reason the release of the lacking 40gb edition today also spawned some really good deals with the 60gb...

Part of the reason I never bought a 360 was due to Microsoft's insistance that there was no problem with the hardware. A company flatout lying to people doesn't really instill confidence, you know?

In a way, though, that also made me sad. I wanted to buy a 360. I really did. LIVE looks to be great, and... ok, so I don't care about any of the games, but LIVE looks to be great...

I'm still abit skeptical as well but eventually you have to believe Microsoft will get it's act together with hardware. Still, it's unsettling to worry about your system failing all the time especially if your a carefree person like myself. Hell, I left my slimline PS2 running for nearly 60 hours straight because I didn't feel like turning it off when I went out of town. (Still works fine :p )Hopefully, the 360 hardware will get to a point where you don't have to treat it like a newborn child in order for it to work.
