Sorry bud; Microsoft is bad for the gaming industry. If sega would have continued to make hardware there wouldn't be an xbox or xbox 360.
Online console gaming is the result of Segas dreamcast grandfathering it in, not Microsoft and what they did with it afterward and it wasn't anything that wasn't already being done on PCs.
I played online and downloaded game demos, movies, tv shows and music way before xbox live and I didn't have to pay for emulation.
Sorry man, I'm not a believer of the hype; i wasn't a believer when they came out with the original xbox nor this time around with the xbox 360. No way is it going to come close in sales of the original one. Not even with all the Halo hype.

Microsoft can continue to shuck and jive and wine and dine the editors of blogs sites, the media (print and digital) but it'll all go down in flames soon enough.

I say bring Sega back from the dead; we need it now more than ever................

I'll go into the symbolism a bit more instead of just hinting at it. Microsoft is a part of the gaming industry, and if the 360 was "killed" like you (bizarrely) expect it to be, it would hurt the industry as a whole. Competition promotes advancement and innovation. For every gaming console that dies, the game industry dies a little bit too, which is the allusion I'm trying to make by quoting John Donne. A lot of people really enjoy the games coming out for PSN; do you think it would exist at this point if Microsoft hadn't blazed the trail with XBLA? Do you think Sony's gaming division would even exist if Nintendo hadn't gone forward with the SNES? Do you think Nintendo would have put as much effort into the SNES if not for the Sega Genesis?

Hoping for any console to die is selfish to the point that you're actually hurting yourself in the long run. The games you know and love are like the fruit of the tree of gaming, if you will, and the companies that make those games are the roots. As those roots die off, the fruit withers and dies as well. There is competition between these companies, but not in a way that should lead to one claiming total victory. I'm a 360 fan but I definitely wouldn't want it to win by a total landslide like the PS2 managed last generation. I'm actually really happy with how close the race has been so far.

If you love video games and hate Microsoft, or Sony, or Nintendo, or anyone else striving to advance the medium, then ultimately you hate yourself just a little bit, because these companies and all us gamers are interconnected. There is no us vs. them take-no-prisoners battle for survival going on here. It's a big game, and games are more fun when the scores are close.

If I can't make it to the midnight launch, I will get home from school, arriving to a medium-sized, blue box with a glowing three on the lid. With the fervor of a lion at the slaughter, I will tear the box open, exposing a modest green helmet concealing the Holy Grail of video games. In its wake, I will hop in glee, squealing like a girl. And for (presumably) ten hours straight, I will be either satisfied or disappointed by the fruits of three years of labor.
