The console that is awesome!...except for gaming??

Okay, don't know if anyone is still paying this post any mind, but have an update on my 360 crap-outs. The replacement unit I recieved 09/20/07 froze up while I was playing NHL'07 today. On restart it goes into the dash board without issue, but upon reading any disc now, I get the "to play this game put disk into an xbox 360 console" message. So that didn't take long...

First 360 was good for 8 months, replacement unit was good for just over 1 month, replacement for the replacement unit...guess we shall see when it gets here in about a month.

Can't tell you how happy I am with my xbox dying a second time the day before Guitar Hero 3 is released. Guess microsoft wanted me to save that $100 for something more important. It's great they're looking out for their customers...

dbushik

My 360 RRoDed about eight months out of the box back on 08/19/07. I got a replacement unit 32 calendar days after that on 09/20/07 (and it only took MS two screw-ups on the repair order and four phone calls to make that happen).

So far eveything seems good, but it's only had about six hours of use, or less, since I got it back.

One thing to note on the positive side is that the replacement unit is much quieter than my original unit when playing off the disc.

Before, I would experience a noticable increase in noise when not in the dash board or playing live arcade (i.e. playing a game disc). Now, there is not nearly as much of an increase when a game disc is spinning. You can still tell the difference, but now it's not like a jet engine spinning up to speed.

Now it just sounds about as loud as a microwave oven. You know, normal.

Anyway, so far it seems good. Hope it lasts.

dbushik

Wow that really sucks. And guess what? The EXACT same thing happened to me. Except it wasn't a repaired console it was a BRAND NEW Elite straight out of the box. Same thing happened as described in the article. You can imagine my horror after finally plucking up the courage to give the 360 a go and its dead out of the damn box! Luckily for me I took back the next day to Gamestation and they replaced it no hassles. The guy there told me they get about 10 - 12 dead 360's every WEEK. :-/ not encouraging, specially as he was apparently on his 4th one. Still on a positive note my new one worked like a charm and I am now happily enjoy much xbox 360 goodness. But it definately wasn't a good introduct to it i'll say! Have only owned an xbox for a week and already on my 2nd! Now there's a record! Getting a brand new xbox that dies right away is bad enough but one that's apparently been 'repaired' is just a joke really... :-( hope you get yours sorted out soon.

PIXED

Recalls are only necessary when there's a chance for physyical harm, such as exploding laptop batteries or something.

Sony released defective PS2's into the market for years until a class action lawsuit was brought upon. This forced Sony to start extending warranties and get control over their manufacturing problems. Until that time, however, defective PS2's that DRE'd under warranty were fixed and sent back to happy owners.

This is where Microsoft is dropping the ball. The RRoD's can be controlled if Microsoft used a better clamping system on their chips then their current x-clamps. As of right now they're just adding more goop to the chips. This is the design flaw that Microsoft needs to correct.

Hopefully other 360 owners will continue to bring this flaw up in the forums and get this taken cared of once and for all. Remember folks, companies (Sony, Microsoft, maybe Nintendo) don't do things out of the goodness of their hearts.

Tepoz

Wow... 5 minutes huh? Well, I was lucky enough to have mine back for 5 months before it fizzled out on me AGAIN. And no big surprise, but it did the same exact thing it did the first time when it broke down.

I didn't get the Red Light Trio Special the first time, but it didn't like XBOX 360 games. (It'd give me this white screen that said "To play this disc, please insert into a XBOX 360 console" in multiple languages. Umm... this IS a XBOX 360 console!!) At first, it'd only do it once or twice before it'd boot up the game. (I had to open the disc tray to get it to go back to the Dashboard, then close it again and hope it would read the disc correctly.) Before I sent it to Microsoft the 1st time, I wound up having to do it anywhere between 10-15 times, and sometimes the games would lock up during gameplay. (More often than usual... or that was usual for my console when it was brand new.)

I sent it off, and after 2 months, not 22 days... I'm talking an ENTIRE 2 months... it came back, and it seemed all was well. Until about a month ago... then I DID get the Red Light Trio Special. Weird thing is, it only did that once. But after that, any time I turned it on and tried to play a XBOX 360 game, it'd do the EXACT same thing it did the first time (white screen, opening/closing the disc tray desperately to get the game to load... very deja vu-ish). But it started out where I had to open/close the disc tray about 5-8 times to get the game to load, and games would freeze up VERY often. You could hardly play for 2 hours without it locking up at least once. If you turned on the console with a XBOX 360 game in it, it went to the Dashboard and in the "image" of the disc tray where it usually says what game is in the console, it said "Play DVD". WHAT?! And sometimes it'd say "CDX" when an original XBOX game was in the console... although it never had a problem reading XBOX games, DVDs, or CDs. Just XBOX 360 games.

This time when I called the 1-800-4MY-XBOX number, I got someone who could hardly speak or understand English, so I have really high expectations on my repair/replacement... not. If I get the exact same console back, I'm going to send it right back to them and tell them they'd better give me a brand new one... if they didn't get it right the first time, what makes you think they will the 2nd? Or the 3rd? Or the 10th?! How many times do I have to go 2 months without a console I obviously overpaid for?! What I'd REALLY like for them to do is send me a check to cover the cost of getting a brand new one, so I can go to GameStop and get a brand new one plus the 2-year ESA so if it breaks down on me within that timeframe, I can just go to my local GameStop store, show them my receipt, chunk them my busted 360, and they'll give me a brand new one right out of the box. No waiting 2 months... just 2 minutes. ;) (I HIGHLY recommend doing this, and I regret not having done it when I purchased the one that's on its way to Texas right now... for the 2nd time in less than a year.)

Matadore

I guess it does just speak to the desperation of what true hardcore gamers will put up with to play a decent game. This has indeed come as a result of the transistion time for new games for the PS 3 from the PS 2.

Microsoft is in serious trouble the moment satisfactory replacement games arrive on the PS3. I really think Microsoft is quietly freaked about this issue more than anyone understands.

My launch 360 died a couple of weeks ago, so I was fearful of not having it in time for Halo 3. Being in Austin, it took only 1 day to get my shipping box from McAllen and 1 day for them to get it back (on August 30th).

Today, checking the service.xbox.com site, I see that I have a new serial number (SN:916127XXXXXX) and warranty changed to "In Warranty". I would have liked to have seen some shipping info, but I should see it next few days.

I will be very interested if the is actually a new box (Zephyr and/or HDMI), or a refurbished unit.

dropper

That's just awful.
X-Box has everything to be a great console system, but it can't because quality control is too bad.
Microsoft has to learn that people buying gaming consoles won't take this kinda cr*p.
And they made this mistake with X-Box, now they repeat on X-Box 360.
I do like some games exclusive to the 360, but I don't plan on buying one not before they make a reliable robust console.

Let's hope they do compensate you in some way Brian... at least you have some visibility, they'll have to do something to compensate.

Bokusatsu_Tenshi

5 minutes?! Can't believe this, MS. I'd call them right away and bitch about this until they agree to somehow replace the system ASAP. Because of the failures, it should be standard procedure for them to offer instant replacements in support stores or whatever, and only after that send the box to a repair centre themselves - after all it's never the same box that comes back.

kryo

@ Snukadaman

The PS3 is having some problems, but it's mainly due to firmware and PSN issues. Sony is new to this online console gaming thing, which doesn't excuse them, but makes it slightly more understandable.

In terms of actual hardware, the failure rate is extremely low for a product with that much shit packed into it.

If the PS3 was having problems like the 360 is, it would be a big issue. There are a million fanboys who'd love nothing more than to bash Sony over the head with something like this.

On to the topic at hand:

I feel for you, Bashcraft. The reason I don't own a 360 yet is because of this very issue. 360 sales seem to have stagnated, and I expect that the RROD has a lot to do with that. You should all be entitled to a recall and a replacement with the new 65 nm chips and improved heatsinks.

@ GHETTELECTUAL: It's nice that your product is working, but "mine works, who cares about yours" is a completely selfish attitude. Do you think Microsoft will come to your home and pry your console from your cold, dead fingers? You don't have to do anything to it, if you are confident that it will never Ring on you. Keep it. But for those that do have problems (and for potential buyers, like me), it would be a Godsend.

artificial_intellivision

@deviantCharles: I wouldn't count on that Best Buy warranty. My 2nd box died in under a year. Future Shop (which pretty much is Best Buy) would not honor the extra warranty because Microsoft is covering the red ring under their manufaturer warranty for 3 years. Evidently Product Service Plans only take effect if the manufacturer warranty isn't covering you anymore (which they never tell you, it's in their legal jargon). Basically you are paying them money for coverage you cannot even use.

They told me to take a hike and now I have to wait for weeks instead of getting a replacement with the extra warranty I paid for.

Mike Maximus

So... two years into this debacle and they still have no idea how to fix the damm thing?
This is one of the worst consumer electronic ever!
I have sent my second one for repair and its been two weeks of no Bioshock, not sure Halo3 is worth all this aggravation. It better be a perfect 10.
If I was sure that Halo3 was going to be released for the PC 3 months latter, I would just sell it and wait for it.
Please stop trying to cover the sun with your fingers, this issue is a serious one and the recall idea is a very valid one, it could actually save MS from further pains and loss of customer loyalty. I am starting to miss my original xbox very much. Might as well dust of my PS2 and get GOW2 to pass the time.
That crap wasn't acceptable then mate, it certainly isn't acceptable now either! How people can continue to sink money into a console that has such a bad failure rate that even in the UK 'Watch Dog' has done a feature on the 360's troubles.

Btw, for those who don't know what 'Watch Dog' is, it's a British consumer-protection show which shows up all kinds of scams etc. This is proof enough that M$ aren't taking this crap seriously!

$1 billion on a 3-year warranty? They should've given that money out to those who's 360's have RRoD'd AND done a recall as compensation. Come 25th September, we'll be seeing more 360's commit suicide after Master Chief comes out guns blazing...

My second one just died about a week ago. My first one died slowly, so I was hoping my second one would hold on, but it was pretty much toast. RRoD on boot, or crashing after 2 minutes. So, the phone guy (the two times I've talked to them they were very nice people both times) suggested I turn it on and we can try to figure out what is wrong with it. One of the dumber ideas I've heard. But, to humor him, I turn it on, and obligingly it RRoD's immediately, no start up sound or audio. Phone guy said he'd send me out the return box right away! So I am dismayed that Micrsoft is indeed sending out units that break after a short time (mine, about four and a half months), which means they either have not identified the problem or they just don't know how to fix it (or maybe there are lots of problems). My PS2 has maybe crashed twice in all the years I've had it, but it still runs solid.

natpoor

The problem is that Microsoft keeps recycling the same defective units through their RMA process. They get it back, they "fix" it, and send it out to someone else who has a problem. Then the same cycle continues.

ShadowFalls

One of the things I have recently realized is why conosle owners have forgiven Sony's track records of console defects, especially with the PS2 and the laser lens/voltage problems. The difference is that when the PS2 went belly up, it went belly up. You knew you had to buy another PS2 after your warranty was up (30days, 90days, or 1yr). If you were lucky enough to have your PS2 go belly up while under warranty, you would get a fully functioning PS2 back from the Sony repair center (without any officiial explanation why it happened, mind you). This is where Microsoft's problem is. The 360's are going belly up under warranty and yet people are still having problems with them when they come back. This is totally different from the Sony PS2 problems where they were fixed completely after coming back.

The 1yr warranty extension was possible because 360 owners demanded it and Microsoft knew full well that a Sony style class action lawsuit would happen if they didn't. The problem is that extending the warranty is only the first step. Sony was also forced to extend their warranties but they knew what the problems were on the PS2 and they corrected them. Again, nothing officicial was ever said about the PS2 defects but we all know what they were. This is where Microsoft is dropping the ball. We all know the defects have to do with the mainboards flexing due to the intense heat inside the 360's and their current x-clamp systems are inadequate to deal with the chips losing contact when the boards flex.

I was willing to give Microsoft a free pass since I did the same with the PS2. The difference is that the PS2's came back fully functioning after being repaired for unspecified problems. The 360's are not.

Fix the board flexing issue Microsoft. We know what the problem is and now you need to make sure your manufacturers and repair centers understand the problem too.

Tepoz

In the states gamestop has used consoles for 189.00 (core) 20bucks for 1 year extended warranty, and for another 60 you can get a used harddrive. 270.00 all together, and you can do even exchange if you have a problem. I recently purchased a 2nd 360 from GS just because of my fear of getting the red ring on my under warranty console(Which by the way has been off to M.S. 4 times, and I bought at lauch) I love 360, but it has a better chance of failing than working. I don't think a recall of all Xbox 360s sold is necessary. However, I do think that MS should start replacing Xbox 360s instead of just "repairing" them. Because let's face it, the repairs just don't seem to cut it.

All these people you hear about who've gone through five, ten Xbox 360s... the reason that number's so high is becuase after each fix they're being given a refurbished Xbox that is extremely unreliable.

C'mon Microsoft, if a person's Xbox breaks, and you fix it only to have it break again, it's time to ship that person a brand new console. It's just that simple.

Number41

TigerDirect is selling refurbished premium 360's for $299.00. It might be worth looking into, because hopefully they have been refurbished with the new heatsink. That said, MS replaced my 360 when I started to possibly imagine a game play slow-down in Test Drive Unlimited. Although the replacement unit had a noisy DVD drive, the unit itself has performed very reliably. MS would have replaced the unit because of the DVD drive, but I kept it anyway, and haven't had any DVD problems since. One of the problems with the early units was there apparently was nothing out there that could stress the unit fully until Gears of War came out. Using all three cores simultaneously probably puts a level of stress on the system that MS couldn't duplicate long-term when testing the units before shipping. Hopefully that issue has been resolved.

bornonce

@Ashcraft --- Dude are you even surprised that it broke down at this point? I am currently on my 4th 360. The sad thing is that I am at a point where I no longer want to play games in it for fear it will break down. That, to me, is the biggest blow Microsoft could ever get.

This kinda crap is so disconcerting. I walk on egg shells around my 360. I make decisions like "get bioshock on the pc, and save my xbox for halo 3 and mass effect." I know its a ticking time bomb, and I want to make sure it doesnt go off while I have a full slate of games I want to play.

Even more annoying is that microsoft is now blowing out all this inventory after the price cut that are all essentially RROD compatible models. Its not a great way to treat their customers. They are very very lucky they have games like bioshock, mass effect and halo3 to be the sugar while we swallow our bitter pill.

Belain

Well a broken 360 is sadly the price you pay for having one (I own one mind you so this isn't PS3 fanboy bashing). I think most 360 owners knew full well the risk and if/when my 360 breaks down I'm not going to raise a huge stink about it calmly go through the proper channels to get it repaired. I am worried what I would be doing without my prime gaming machine for 2 weeks, I guess I'll finally get around to playing Metroid for the Wii.

On a similar note my 6 year old CRT monitor just burned out on me and now I have to use an even older CRT monitor I had in storage (about 5 minutes before writing this). I know it's not as bad as losing a whole system but at least you can take comfort in knowing you're not the only one having problems with hardware.

LordNova

It's been said before but these problems are out of control. There's no reason a dedicated system like the 360 should be having these kinds of problems, especially after being serviced once.

I'm trying to decide whether I want to purchase a 360 or PS3 for the holiday season and it bothers me that one of the factors is whether or not my console will last me to Boxing Day.

Wolfrider31

@topbravo22: I thought this might be like Windows.

Windows 1.0 sucked. So did Microsoft Web TV.

Windows 3.1 (the "true" sequel) was actually pretty good. So was the Xbox.

Windows 95 - the true 3rd version of Windows - was good once you patched it up. So, the 360 is really version 3 - and based on Microsoft's history, it should have been the one that worked.

Well, I guess after some more "patches" - hardware, this time.

So I'm still willing to wait until it's fully patched. Of course, if Windows ME and Windows Vista are any signs, that means the Xbox 720 and the Xbox 1080 will be *really* horrible....

johnhummel

That's really fucking poor. It will be interesting to see how MS react. Kotaku is getting pretty big these days so I would imagine they'll want to deal with this quickly and quietly. MS can't just replace it with a better one on the quiet either as all the XBLAH games revert to demos if you're not logged into Live.

Still, my launch 360 is going strong so I can't complain. I'm certain it's because it's next to my desk fan so it gets adequate cooling.

photoboy

This is totally pathetic! The Xbox 360 is at the right price point for me, but I know I harp on about it, but this sort of thing is simply unacceptable!!!!! Until these machines are shown to last about at least 3 years without breaking down, they won't be seeing my money regardless of how good the games are. There is no point having good games if I have to treat the console with kid gloves and living in fear of it breaking. It does not matter if the games are good if I keep having to send the damn thing off to get repaired.

What's even more astounding is the Xbox 360 fans who have been burnt time and again, yet blindly stick with it. There is no incentive for Microsoft to sort this SHIT out, if fans just keep buying the *newer* model in the hope that that fixes the endemic problem. Vote with your wallets people, all companies understand that language!!

Just as Sony appears to be killing their brand, Microsoft may soon be killing their 1 year lead.

sauvage

Wow, I kind of want an Xbox 360. But I've been scared to death hearing all the horror stories. The past year or so.

To all you guys having problems with your systems, I believed you even when the fanboys tried to shove you guys in the closet by accusing you guys of giving your systems baths and juggling with them, or what ever inane excuse they came up with...

It is undeniable, the Xbox 360 has a serious defect. Too bad, I think Microsoft would sell more systems if they actually worked, rather than trying to bait people with a measly $50 price drop.

Jeez, when will people learn that the only way to make a company like microsoft take action to remedy this problem is to NOT BUY THEIR BROKEN HARDWARE.

As someone who has worked in the software industry for many years, I know what microsoft is like. I avoided their xbox console because it was cumbersome and had nothing of interest to me. I am avoiding the 360 because I know it will work about as well as microsofts other flagship product, Windows. Sure I am missing out on some good games, but I am also missing out on the pain caused by a broken console and a 3 week wait for a repair.

If you buy from microsoft, you have only yourself to blame for the unhappyness of a broken console and a long wait for a repaired machine :(

johnnywashngo

@Akin: you might have a point; the format's got its ups and downs. if you were in my position, no doubt youd easily patch shit with a lot less effort. i could argue that i spend a lot less not having to upgrade vidoe cards, but then again, im looking at an HDTV that i just finished paying off, so to each their own, i figure. plus, my reluctance to PC games means i have to play catchup & figure out the hype behind Deux Ex, Fallout, and so many others. christ knows my current PC runs uh, Grim Fandango and Sucmm VM.

@Snukadaman_: no doubt! if youre a gamer and you kept up with this shit since the analog days of game mags (before the internets, when we got news once a month, and a game/system's sucess was based on how many kids you know that rocked that game/system), you should be able to sniff PR bullshit a mile away. "things break?" "we dont pay for exclusives"? haha, sure enough, that shit works on kids who didnt start gaming in the arcades, but my ass is damn near 30, try again! which means, ive finally got the expendable income & fiscal responsibility to actually buy all 3 systems when im ready to do so, so if you dont come through on what i was hoping for, its cool, ill sell my system to someone eager to do your PR work for free.
Ill be honest, i know PS2 owned last gen, and we all know - fuck, analysts couldnt say it enough - this gen was gonna be way more spread out, but look at just the holiday 2007 lineup; no matter what youre into, there's enough going around for anybody no matter which system you banked on. why we clown on each other to make ourselves feel better about which system we chose, like its a freakin football team, is beyond me.

on that note, not enough jack in me to finish the 3rd subsystem as it turned out...made it to phase/level 8 of 10, trying again so wish me luck!

TheIrishNinja

@THEIRISHNINJA first of all i'm not a troll no matter what you say, I simply give my opinion on topics, which is what you just did. If I were to use that definition I could just as easily call you a troll. And I have no clue why you single me out as as being anti-sony. I am certainly not the first person to bash sony on here and I won't be the last. I even have a PS2 and love it, its a good system and has good games, the PS3 is neither.

kagebutsu

Horrible...absolutely horrible. This is fuckin' ridiculous. Does Microsoft actually expect 360 owners to GAME? What with them having to send their broken 360's off every so often. Brian, perhaps your words don't really express your frustration, but I'm surprised you're not more upset about this. I'd be furious. Hmm...almost makes me wonder if I should just get rid of my 360 =/

y2kenjination

Even if 30% of 360s fail, for one person to have multiple failed boxes (with nightmare stories of 5+ failed boxes in a row) is statistically improbable.

I think one of the things people need to look into if they have multiple failed boxes is the environment they place their 360 in. Any cramped TV stands are a no-no, placing 360s on carpet is a big no-no, and places where the average temperature is fairly hot to begin with should be extra careful. Should we have to take these measures to ensure our gaming? Well, no, but it would most likely solve many of the people having multiple failed boxes.

Many editors tend to have multiple gaming machines and cramped offices, so it exaggerates the problems the 360 has with bad airflow and heating mitigation, so that's why we see an abnormally high number of failed 360s with gaming editors.

The majority of 360 machines are still doing well, and my Elite (with the new heatsinks) has never had heating issues thus far. Place it on a nice open glass TV stand away from other electronics and your 360 will be fine.

Jeff9731
