I personally don't own or like the Wii much (maybe pick one up in 2 or 3 years time when it's DIRT cheap). I am an XBOX 360 guy, who will buy a PS3 soon (when the price drops) but this is disgusting.
If these games sell well, then Nintendo should say
'Screw you, we're putting the SNES chips in, cause you don't care about graphics'.
Hopefully these horrible games will not sell well. Games like Metroid, Super Mario Galaxy and SSBBRAWL! deserve to sell well. Seriously the DS has better graphics than this crap game.

The screens don't look too great either way, but they're so pixelated that you can hardly tell what the game would look like on a TV. The Wii can hardly be blamed for the visual monstrosity that is this game. We've all seen the Mario Galaxy screens and videos. It's capable of much more when a developer actually cares enough to create more than a quick cash in. Nobody expected the Wii to be such a huge hit, so studios are scrambling to release titles for it. This game will (rightfully) sell like crap, and the devs will learn that they have to put forth some effort in the future.
Why does it feel like such a personal little victory that the Wii has some ugly games? Do you own stock in Sony? If not, cool out and enjoy your console of choice.

What were you expecting when you bought a Wii? Nothing this system does will impress you, because nothing it does will ever look even close to 360/PS3 quality. So if bad graphics are such an issue, why did you get the system...?
And to be honest, I don't see what makes graphics so important. I saw someone asking if you'd be able to do Bioshock on the SNES...not exactly, the SNES wasn't natively capable of any sort of 3D thus the gameplay would have to radically change as well, but it was certainly capable of the same sort of immersion factor. I think games like Super Metroid proved that to the 16-bit generation long ago. It doesn't take good graphics to have an immersive, atmospheric environment -- books can do the exact same thing without any graphics at all.
Now, to all the graphics snobs here, in ten years when a game with Bioshock-quality graphics is released, will you be complaining about that?

1. The phrase is not literal, just as global warming does not mean cold temperatures will not happen. The phrase actually means having the strongest horsepower doesn't matter.

2. Few developers pushed the GC in the first place. They mostly put their D teams on GC work for multiplatform games. This time, developers are not even putting those same teams on the Wii, so the Wii teams have almost no experience with the Wii's shading system, which pretty much cripples the graphics and performance.

If I was to compare the stereotypes associated with geeks against the "mass market" audience, I'd probably something to the effect that the mass market audience demonstrates a broader, healthier range of life skills, and to say that one group is smarter or dumber than the other is nitpicking semantics.

In the meantime, all these things that core gamers rant about aren't really all that. I really liked what they said in the panel about videogame writing, about how almost all games either play into a childish fantasy to be the hero, or a game's idea of a "compelling story" is to simply reveal more backstory to the player after they beat each level.

The whole idea of "games being a serious art medium" isn't here yet. And the games that are pushing the envelope into the realm of art -- games like Everyday Shooter, fl0w, and Super columbine Massacre RPG -- are games that could run just as well on a Wii, (or a PSone for that matter).

So I don't see how an argument that "Wii is for stupid people, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 is for intelligent, discerning consumers" actually holds any water when you look at the evidence.

This is arcade Fast and the Furious. F&F was merely a new Cruis'n engine game with the movie license slapped on. Wii Cruis'n is evidently a home conversion of said game, with the movie license taken back off, thus being readopted as an actual Cruis'n game once again. Now, there were 3 F&F arcade games that I know of (the original, Drift, and one with bikes), so this could be a straight conversion of the first one, or an amalgamation of all three for all we know.

And I think I'm the only person that's actually kind of looking forward to this. F&F was sort of fun, and it's about the only racing game I can get my wife to play with me. :P

It is true graphics are more than just a mean to display pixels. Gears of wars would not be the same with the looks of Alone in the Dark 1.

Like you say they have a lot to do with the mood and ambiance of the game.

Sometimes it can even be gameplay element. Take for example the coop part in GoW where it's dark and you need to light up your partner with the search light.

Personnaly I get bassed by lot of people because I say the Wii is just a gimmicky mini-games party machine. I like games like bioshock. I sometimes play mario party with some friends be it is usualy because we are stoned or drunk and cannot do anything else.

For the people mentioning that graphics have a place, yes, they do. I personally believe that the Wii is capable of what is graphically necessary, not that the third-party rushjobs that are so painfully prevalent right now would allow you to get that impression. If you're an honest human being, go see some Metriod Prime 3 gameplay vids, Twilight Princess vids, or the Mario Galaxy vid posted previously in this thread. You hear Wii advocates always mentioning Nintendo games not necessarily because we're fanboys, but because Nintendo is the only one who freaking bothers to do a decent job with this console. If I had realized previously that the third party developers were going to be so lazy, I might have thought twice about my Wii purchase...

With greater graphic capabilities, comes more atmosphere and immersion. Metroid Prime is immersive and atmospheric, but if you've played Bioshock, you know that with its better graphics the world seems much more believable than Metroid.
That doesn't mean that a game on the Wii, based on graphics alone, can't be more immersive than its next-gen counterparts, its just immersive in different ways. With the PS3 and 360, the graphics bring in both the immersion and the mood of the game. With the Wii, the immersion is even moreso because of the wii-mote. But because of the Wii's graphic capabilities, it lacks in atmosphere, and since most developers don't seem to want to think of realistic ways to use the wii-mote, were left with last-gen games with waggle gimmics. Where's my First Person Silent Hill/Resident Evil in which my wii-mote is my flash light, my knife and my gun? Wheres the games that are supposed to make feel like I'm swinging a sword and not just my flicking wrist to make the character do it for me? Wheres the effort? I own a Wii, but I can't help but feel I've been swapped out for someone who would rather have a remote balanced on his head than have a rich and fuffilling experience.
In a way, as it stands, Nintendo have got what they wanted. They have a system thats fun to play for short periods of time, lots of mini-games, and alot of family oriented games. But the wii has more potential than that, and it dissappointing to think were going to have to put up with all the cookie cutter mini-games, edu-tainment crap, and last gen remakes and getting maybe one or two games a year worth playing for more than a week.
I feel as if Nintendo are looking past me to grandma with dollar signs in thier eyes and its depressing for a gamer who wants games with substance instead of some stupid fitness training crap.

As for the rest of your argument: yes, the world is full of stupid people. Can't argue with that. But if you're trying to say that the fact a gamecube 1.5 sells well is proof of that, I believe you're wrong. It's a platform, with games coming out for it. How much hardware dev momentum its got is not relevant when gaming interests are concerned. The DS is selling like crazy, and it has a great library already. Are all those people idiots, or are these people that are just looking for a nice gaming experience, caring less about graphics and more about gameplay?

NOTE: Saying I "don't really care about graphics" does not imply I have no minimum standards, nor does it say great graphics are evil either. It's just saying that gameplay and a story (or whatever game aspect you dig most) have started to matter more, and that graphics can be good if they "fit" a game, despite the fact that they might not be the best of the best.

You still really haven't argued against Sanada's point, just reinforced yours. Just because the Wii is a slightly upgraded Gamecube (and it is, there's no doubting that), how does that suddenly make it a gimmick and not worth my time? While it's true that the Wii loses it's appeal after several days, it's not because the Wii is a poor console. The initial lack of quality games really hurt the Wii. However, I've been playing my Wii a lot recently due to the recent flow of quality games, and the impending release of several huge titles. I can't understand why the majority of Wii games look worse than GameCube games. Some are inferior to N64 titles.

Graphics don't matter? Try playing Bioshock with Super Nintendo capabilities. Graphics are more than pretty. They are AI, they are atmosphere, they are what make games great and I'm getting sick and tired of feeling like I'm somehow a "lesser" gamer because I actually value decent graphics in a game.

Nintendo has succeeded in the "looks don't matter" department where so many others have failed. But, like I've stated previously in this comment and many comments before -- looks are just the beginning. Processing power can create a far better game in far more ways than some crappy last-gen joke of a title.

Imagine Ocarina of Time running on the Super Nintendo. Graphics aside, it wouldn't do the job would it? There is absolutely no way it would work. Cruis'n is just another jagged example of everything that's wrong with the Wii.
