Everyone agrees that PS3 is not the cheapest console around. But isn't it becoming obvious why?? Yes, it will play games, really good games and there will be more available then you can count (eventually) but what's wrong with creating something that can do more than just play games? I for one love the fact that I can switch from playing my games, to my music, to recording TV all on one unit. You either like it or you don't.

About PLAYTV itself, someone made a comment that "sony should stick to what they know". I ask you, if Sony does not know about TV, recording, playing, and all aspects of AV then who does??

You can buy twin tuner PVRs for £70 and the only advantage here is being able to use the PSP to stream your recorded shows over the internet. The HD part is silly because HD freeview is years away in the UK. If the addon was real cheap, like the cost of a DVB-T card for a pc then it might be useful.

Also playing games at the same time as recording would be a big deal breaker.

I'm not a fan of these convergence devices, generally a product is much better when its designed for its purpose rather than trying to be a swiss army knife, having the choice is no bad thing though.

DVB-T is Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial. It uses good ol' antennas sitting on top of your TV to broadcast free TV channels as MPEG2 streams. Currently in Australia all analog broadcasters have at least one DVB equivalent. Listing is here. Looking at the list we have Nine HD, Ten HD, and Seven HD all 1080i, deinterlacing to 1080p. The other channels broadcast in 576i EDTV (widescreen) at a minimum. In Australia, at least, there's plenty of hi-def digital broadcast content, enough to make HD digital video recorders a desireable product.

I welcome our new PS3 tuner overlords, as it means I don't need to lay down cash to buy a twin HD tuner hard disk recorder ($800), or upgrade my PC (god knows what). My guess is the PS3 will transcode video on the fly to h.264 MPEG4 for better compression.

So to sum up - this is not for North America - it has nothing to do with cable, satellite, or IPTV - it's for DVB-T! Yay!

It won't work in the US. This isn't a capture device. It's just a receiver for a pre-compressed digital stream that it dumps to the to internal hard drive. No encoding is being done by the PS3. You can do the same thing with a cheap USB dongle

(only works in Europe). This doesn't replace a Tivo- which actually captures and encodes analog signals in addition to digital-only broadcasts. Sony is probably just making USB drivers for existing Freeview dongles. Which begs the question, why would you need or want a PS3 for this? It would be cheaper and more convenient to use a spare PC since you won't be able to play games while the PS3 is recording.

I have to agree Sony needs to help the DEVs make games better and or equal or the 360 versions. Sony keeps adding features that a small percentage will use, while the majority of games only people wait.

In the other article Harrison says Europe only because of the service right? So the US comcast/time warner/Directv DVR sucks people are SOL. There was no way in hell Sony was going to let you do anything with the DVR anyways, once it's DVR'd it would be sony encrypted and locked and you wouldn't be able to do anything "cool" with it. As costly as it is (per month) the $300 Tivo HD is probably the best bet.

I usually play a game or three every day on my PS3 when I get home from work (which the wife both alternately hates and joins in on), but then if nothings on TV, I watch something that was on my computer like a "backed up movie" or a TV show or whatever...

The way I see it, the Wii is really the only GAMES ONLY system, and it's really for everyone; the Xbox 360 is the perfect complement to your dorm room; and the PS3 is the perfect addition to an already good, HD-enabled home entertainment system.

You can just transfer video files from the PS3 to the drive.

I for one am definitely looking forward to this feature. I'm usually on the move so I don't get as much time with my home consoles as I'd like.

Sony slowly making it possible to completely control your ps3 from the psp handheld isn't bad...It's not bad at all. Hopefully this feature comes soon, because I rather use my ps3 as a DVR instead of going out purchasing and paying for Tivo.
