Comment on Bashcraft's 360 Finally Dies (How's Yours?)
hi i got my 360 elite last october an now its been sent back to ms with a hardware failure it died whilst playing halo 3 online i was pissed
but surprisingly it lasted longer than my ps3 which had a broken blu-ray drive after just 3 months but i must just have bad luck as my laptop is suffering probs with vista so am thinking that ms needs to get it's self sorted out or it will lose customers.

My 360 hasnt yet gotten the RROD.. but it's totally useless. i cant play original xbox games, my 360 games are so glitchy theyre unplayable.. my dashboard is completely crashed. im actually TRYING to get the rrod simply so i can be under warranty and not pay anything to get it fixed. but yeah, it's just as useless as if it did have the problem.

CaptainCulp

I got my 360 for christmas '06. It went RRoD this weekend also (09/19/07). Up until that point I experienced no issues. I would occasionally have it give me a disc read error in GoW, but that was very infrequently and a re-start would invariably correct the problem immediately.

Then on Sunday I was playing NHL 07, the game froze, I re-started and got the RRoD. After some playing around with the system (on and off, disconnecting everything, checking power supply lights and HD) I found the issue to be persistant. If I let the console sit for 10-15 minutes, I could get it to start up properly, but within a minute or two it would freeze up again and go to RRoD on re-start.

I called XBox support and the automaton recording ("Hey, my name is Max, and I have the annoying habit of using the word 'hey' way too often.") told me to go to the web. I went to the web and registered my XBox and put in a request for a repair, which returned an error to me and told me to call the support line. I called the support line and they told me to expect a return shipper by Friday (09/24/07), but to check the web site for updates on my repair.

Yesterday (09/21/07), I checked the web and saw there was no repair request for my XBox listed. I called the support line and they told me my previous request (made two days earlier) had been deleted from their system. After I let them know what a bang-up job they were doing they created a new repair request for me and told me to expect a box within 3-5 business days and that once they recieved the console back, it would be 4-6 weeks for them to return it to me.

So, that's my story so far.

dbushik

Well, I played Bioshock for a good 5 hours straight yesterday...

Powered up the 360 this morning, everything seemed fine, except my wireless adapter wasn't being recognized.
Usually a reset fixes that issue, but the only thing it fixed was me not playing Bioshock for what I'm assuming is going to be very a long time.

PS: I'm in Canada, I'll let you know how long it takes.

playmoremusic

I do not know what I have done to you in the past, kind sir... but know this. I am sorry. I am soooooooooooooooooooo very sorry. CAN I HAS MY GAMES BAK PLZ!?

I purchased my 360 last November (therefore missing out on all the price breaks and new features since). No RROD, but in January I booted Gears to experience the dreaded, but less publicized, DDDS (DVD Drive Death Scream).

Holding my phone up to the 360 convinced the CS rep that I needed a new system. His words: "That sounds bad."

I have had mine since launch and not a problem. I bought one that had the 3RROD from a guy just to play around with, read around a little bit, got a tutorial, changed out the x-clamps and voila, works a dream. So the $150 I paid for the "broken" box was justified in a couple of hours. I have stress tested it, leaving it on for days and even in a closed electronics cabinet, no problems to report. Sorry Bash, hopefully they get you taken care of in a timely manner, time to pull out the celebrity card!

re4de2ye0

Mine's about three months old, and it's RROD'd a couple times. I reseated the hard drive and moved the console to the top of my entertainment stand (as opposed to the shelves) and I haven't had a problem since. Just needed a bit more ventilation, I guess.

I Put The Bomp

I have a Japanese launch 360 too, and aside from a few red-ring errors every now and then where the system would refuse to start (usually turning it off and then back on would solve the problem), I've not had any major problems.

My room's TV console is pretty small, so I let the 360 stand upright on the floor, which I'm guessing gives it plenty of breathing space, even if the instruction manual advises against placing it on the cold, hard floor directly.

Most of my friends who bought the same batch of Japanese launch 360s still have theirs working - to my knowledge, all except for one or two. In stark contrast, the only two friends I know of who bought US 360s, have both sent their systems for repairs.

KIRBYSIM

My 360 will sometimes have the disc drive not open when I'm gonna try to put in a game. If I try to open it again it works normal. Not a huge deal. Today though, my 360 froze right after I finished playing a game of Madden. I had just lost the game and pressed the guide button when I saw a friend got on. Poof, frozen 360, I'd say it's about the 5th time the system has frozen since I bought it late Nov. 06. I'm pretty sure it's only a matter of time until it dies. It does give me some peace of mind that the warranty now last 3 years though. Not much but some.

PurpleMonkey

I bought my second-hand premium 360 in June '06, I managed to pick it up for $1000 AUD with 18 games (half of them were still sealed). The system ran flawlessly for over a year. I never experienced any symptoms until one faithful day, in the middle of June '07, the 360 was consumed by the dreaded RROD. It was just another usual day, I was going to play Gears of War with some mates but before that, I wanted to check what was new on the marketplace. Unfortunately, I never got that far and the system froze up as I changed tabs; it never turned on again.

I never expected it to happen as I never had any problems beforehand, not a single freeze or glitch. Oh well, the customer service was great and the only delay was me getting off my lazy ass to ship the 360 (took me a couple weeks). Out of all the people I know with 360s, only 2 of us have had broken down 360s (the other was a disk drive failure). I was going to end my comment with an epic tale but it got lost in the sea of bad grammar (I really need to take English lessons, again).

Libo

I'm currently on my second, which I've not had any problems with, the disc drive died on the first one. Gears of War killed it,I'd 'fortunately' only had it a month, so I just took it back to the shop where I got it (Game) and they replaced it, so I was back getting my Gears on the very next day.

Shadowcast

My Xbox recently died due to the evil ring of death. I was playing the Dirt demo when the screen froze and turned into a checkered image. I restarted it and it worked fine until it did again on a shadowrun demo about 7 min into. I let it cool for 30 minutes then tried it once more, nothing. The RROD greeted me as I knew it was my time. I went through the whole process of getting my empty box and it was delayed a few days due to the tornado problem in texas(where my 360 is). I went 11 months w/o problems... hope they fix that soon!

OKana

My story:

I bought a core in mid April of 2006 with a build date of March 31. The console started having an issue with the drive around Christmas-I would have the manually 'jiggle' the drive door to get the mechanism to open. The 360 went Tango Uniform suddenly with the RROD-no warning or issue at all other than the occasional drive issue. I sent it in and got a refurb unit from MS on April 17. I DL'd the C&C demo. About 45 minutes into playing I got the RROD and called MS. I was lucky enough to get another refurb the day after the Halo 3 Beta started, so the Crackdown DL issue was not a problem for me. The unit has been error-free since.

As an aside, MS was under the impression I bought my original 360 in June of 2006, so i bought the 3 year warranty coverage (you can get it anytime in your 1st year of ownership). I decided to keep it incase there is another drive issue.

While I'm not happy about the reliability of my 360, I am still exceptionally pleased with the quality of my gaming and never hesitate to recommend buying one. The minor hassle of waiting for (free!) repairs is more than ofset by the quality of games and overall 'user experience' of the 360.

VectorScalar

I bought mine on New Years Eve do to Microcenter offering a $100 rebate for either the Core or Full System. I've had it freeze up once during a scene change in GoW but shy of that nothing else has happened. I once freaked when i saw 4 section on the ring light up red but quickly realized that there should only be three if theres a software problem. I then checked the powa-bricks input on the back and realized i hadn't plugged it in fully. I swear, they should make a different color appear for that reason specifically.

mrSundance

Usually I dont like to post and brag about my 360 still working, but you asked me to, so here I am. I bought my Xbox 360 at EB Games, I picked it up at midnight the night of the release, I drove over to the huge line at Best Buy to put it in the window as I honked and drove by, and now it sits under my 50" TV playing movies and games like if it was fresh out of the box. Noisy as fuck though, wish they I could do something about that.

Justcrim

My 360 began resetting itself one day and then it would eventually crash with a black screen with info on it and on the bottom it had a number E68(turns out there can be a E67, E68 or E69 error). I then let it sit for a day and unplugged the cables. The next day I plugged the cables back in and booted the system up. The 360 was playing fine when all of a sudden 30 minutes later it began to reset itself then eventually crashing again. I then followed the instructions on the MS X360 Support Site. I found that if I played with my HD not attached, my 360 would play fine. But as soon as I attached the HD and tried to play, I would get the resetting and eventual crash. So I called MS Support and told them the problem. After talking she was giving me instructions to remove my faceplate, the HD and all the cables. When she asked me if I had any questions I said "Yea...ummm...one question. Why am I sending you my 360 without the HD?" She then said "It's not the hardware?" I then explained to her again what the problem was and then she put me on hold for a few minutes(probably to find out how she should proceed with her manager). She then gave me a address to send my HD to. I then repeated the address she gave me back to her but she told me that I misunderstood her. So I got the right address. After finishing with the phone call I typed the address into mapquest to make sure I got the address correct. Lo and behold I got the address wrong again(could have been my fault, should have double-checked again before I hung up). Anyway, it gave me the address listings for the buildings in the business park and hopefully I chose the correct one. I'll find out today. So now I'm waiting for my HD to return. Today is Monday and I shipped it out on Thursday. Wish me luck and hope this helps out some poor soul.

Cykra

Ouch. So last Friday was my first day of vacation. Wife and kid are in Colorado at her folk's house, cats are locked outside, and I'm supposed to be building a deck. The thing is I have Forza 2 with Zero hours played on it. So I think to myself, "One or two races can't hurt." But wait, first I need to design my car...and my xbox freezes after 20 minutes. Restart...Red Lights of Death! Worse yet, it was my third console replacement! Ugh. Now it is on its way to McCallen Texas, again, where it will FINALLY be designated junk and I will FINALLY get a 360 that works for longer than 6 months. Fingers Crossed. Funny side note. This time I got directed immediately to the head of the department who said that because I was on my 4th 360, I should call him personally with any questions or concerns.

I got my 360 Premium on launch day (with the free mini remote) and it's still going strong. I freezed my butt off like a lot of other sorry souls who waited on line that day. If it wasn't for my friends who brought me some blankets, I probably wouldn't have made it into the morning. Anyhow, my box is still going strong. I have it in my living room which is quite spacious and the average temperature in the room doesn't ever exceed 88 degrees Fahrenheit for the most part. It sits horizontally in an open stand underneath my plasma screen, so it gets plenty of ventilation. The only problem I've ever had was it temporarily freezing on only 1 occasion a year ago while playing a game which required me to restart. So, so far so good. I would only hope that it doesn't crash on me like the first week of playing Halo 3. But I wouldn't mind getting a new improved xbox 360 (perhaps a more quiet, cooler, stable box) if I could trade it.

junkyintel

Mine is still in good working order. The occasional freeze happens after long periods of gaming. Rare but they do happen. No messed up graphics, just a frozen screen. A reset brings it right back to life.

I think I saw an article a few days ago in wired or engadget where they determined that a lot of the 360's problems were due to the GPU overheating. I guess it's jammed in there next to the DVD player and it can't get any proper airflow. If that's the case is switching to a cooler central processor going to make any difference?
Not trolling...I actually want a 360 if they solve the hardware problems.

Polluted

(My 360 ESP!) I had a launch 360 at midnight just the same. Then a week before Microsoft announced there new warranty, my box bricked. I called to complain to customer service none the less. They were more than happy to charge me the $130 bucks to repair my out of warranty console. Something told me not to let them. The night they announced the three year warranty I was on the phone for my white shipping box. It got to me in two days. (must be one of the lucky ones) Since mine arrived to them before the influx of bricked boxes. It only took microsoft 2 weeks to send me a different console. My launch box is no more, but at least im still not waiting for microsft to send me a refund check. (My 360 ESP)

und1sturbed

my 360 died almost a year to the day that it was purchased, best buy told me that i was a day late and out of luck, but MS (to my surprise) said that I was still covered, and this was all before the 3 year extension. their customer service had actually been pretty good to me, even arranging a new, free, repair when I was unable to ship out my box within 30 days of getting the coffin (long story).

antv

I bought one at launch. That lasted about 6 months. The replacement for that lasted about 5 months. The third system I'm still playing with, so maybe, just maybe, it'll be awhile before I have to deal with the coffin again. To Microsoft's credit, I really enjoy the 360 and it was worth the trouble getting two replacements sent to me.
Third time's a charm, right?

boxmyth

I bought mine in October 2006 and it froze up alot for a couple of months then after that update in May it stopped completely. In June I got the RROD of death and had to send it in. It took like a month & a half before i got it back (this was around the time they made the 3yr warranty announcement). Long story short i sold it about a week ago it made no sense to keep it since i recently bought a PS3 plus the games were getting a bit boring.

Jason85

I got my 360 in the US around March of '06. Everything was running smoothly until I got GRAW 2 the week it came out. That game started to freeze up on me alot. So much so that I just stopped playing it! Spiderman 3 did the same thing, although not as much as GRAW 2. So, I went out and got one of those extra fan attachments for the back of my console. It's louder, but I haven't had the problem since. Of course, I havn't played GRAW 2 since then either! Keep your fingers crossed for me! It'll probably die on me as soon as I post this!

ASHBY

I bought my 360 on launch day (Nov 95) and it still works great. In addition to games, we use it as our DVD player and, on occasion, as our stereo. A single red ring appeared on one occasion, but apparently that was because I momentarily had it on the carpet; once I moved it back onto a hard, flat surface it fired up just right. The biggest test came during a heatwave this summer, when I played it for several hours on a scorching hot day. We don't have air-conditioning and I thought...well, if it's going to die, today might be the day. But it worked fine. So I'm one of the lucky ones...thus far. Even if it dies, I'll be certain to get another one. I think the games, the interface, and Xbox Live are terrific.

geomancy

Bought mine in Nov 06, and got the RRoD last week after downloading the Bioshock demo. I had managed to play through to hacking the security camera when it locked up. For a second I thought it was part of the gameplay since there was no error code. After a few reboots it worked again for a few days, occassionally locking up with the checkerboard screen. Oddly it did manage to play completely through '300' without locking up at all. It finally threw the red rings and no longer boots. I used MS's new website which verified my waranty and has sent out a cardboard coffin for my 360. So far the process of using the web has been smooth and efficient.

AZ_ST

Wow, if I didn't think it would get me banned there would be a lot of 4 letter words in the post below. But so far today I've heard from Microsoft twice:

The first time was via email from the support specialist, saying they aren't going to send me a a new console.
The second time was from the woman at MS who got my BBB complaint. And there they also say they aren't going to expedite my repair and refuse to send me a new console.

It takes balls to send out a broken repair and refuse to give the customer ANYTHING to make up for it. I'm going for an FTC complaint next, and then I'll look into small claims court after that. Go go gadget customer service!

NateN

@ExistentialEgg: You know that in the oh, I don't know 25% chance you get red ringed you get your console repaired free? It's not THAT bad.

I got mine in December of 06 (2nd shipment). 2 days.

It lasted 2 days, long enough for me to beat gears of war and dead rising. Maybe I'm just too good at video games, but seriously. Once I got it back from m$?

It has been THE 1337BOX. My 360 has taken a beating, I leave it on pretty much 24/7 much to the fear of my girlfriend who believes the house will burn. And it never skips, it's like if you get red-ringed Microsoft sends you back the uber xbox. It runs so much better than the original did. I don't know what they did to it, but good job guys.

TheJordanator

Got mine in December '06, the 2nd real shipment of 360s.Never had a problem. It's never frozen, glitched or anything. Of course now having angered the RRoD gods I may have sealed my fate. I did however have my HD DVD drive puke after the last update for it. Having been in the IT field for over 10 years and dealing with update pushes the coincidence is to great to think it didn't hose the drive. I can also say the customer service was about the worst I've gotten. They actually "lost" the drive. After providing proof of delivery it magically reappeared. All told it still took about 1.5 months to get back. And I had to pay for the repair. Accessories are only under warranty for 90 days. But out of the 360, Wii and PS3 the 360 is by a huge margin the most played console in the house.

Johnny_Sokko

yikes. I was going to buy a 360 this weekend after reading how great Bioshock is supposed to be. I guess I'm lucky I talked myself out of it. It's just too much money to spend on something that's so unreliable. Here's hoping they roll out updated "non suicidal" 360's soon.

i've already posted my previous situations regarding my console, so i won't mention them here. i just received my fourth one early last week, and let me just say i was initially annoyed. well i received the unit via UPS, but i had gotten a seperate FedEx overnight envelope the same day. i thought "oh great, they must be charging me for it since they realized it wasn't an RRoD issue that was covered in the warranty". i opened the envelope. in it, was a letter and a card. it something along the lines of giving me a month free of xbox live. i looked at the card and, indeed it was, a month of free xbox live. i thought to myself "wow, this is the second time i feel like i've warranted my purchase for this console". i've got to say this was time i've also really felt taken care of by m$. man, now all i want to do is play the upcoming big name titles without any interference!

kw4k

I purchased my 360 ~ GoW launch '06 and it died a couple of weeks ago. One day during a mild summer storm we lost power and I hadn't plugged the 360 into the UPS >_< Like others it started with some occasional freezing and eventually progressed to RRoD. When my repair came back (thank you MS for covering me) it came with a very recent date of manufacture (refurbishment?), the 2nd heat sink, and a card reimbursing me for 1 month of Live Gold.

To be fully honest, I actually prefer this new console they sent me to my old one hehe. It's quieter all around and more importantly there are not nearly as many plastic/metal contraction sounds as the unit cools down.

MindLog

Bought mine in Feb '07 and it's been nothing but GROL (Green Rings of Life, for the acronym-challenged) ever since. And that's after I accidentally elbowed it hard to the ground; I've been keeping it horizontal since that incident. I use it a lot and I even use the HD-DVD as my primary DVD player. I keep it clean and in a well-ventilated area, if that even helps, but I also live in fear every day of total meltdown - we should not have to live in fear of turning our consoles on!! I'm picking up Bioshock tomorrow and I would like to be able to play it all the way through without a depressing 4-6 week interruption. Fingers crosses, knocking wood, cursing M$ under my breath...

Typo Positive

Honestly I think it has a lot to do with play session time. I never play 360 for more than an hour or two. It never had a prob for over a year. Then I get new roomates, who are, well, lifeless, and play my 360 to death. Fortunately my problem was a crapped out DVD drive which I could replace myself that arose from the glue on the spindle melting from the heat. Keep your time to two hours people, take a break, go outside, remind yourself you have legs. Then come back in and get back to pwning your n00bs or whatever it is you crazy kids say.

CopyPaste

My 360 that I bough in June '06 hasn't borked. The first time I turned it on I noticed the amount of heat that was being thrown from the back of the machine. Because of that I treat it like my overclocked gaming rig and take the same precautions (space around machine where vents are located (top and right side when vertical), nothing to suck in hot air from).

This post will get lost in the wash but I feel like it should be put out there. I admit, I have had two die on me, but there is a certain "peace" about having a three year warranty behind the console. Tell me this, and answer honestly...how many of you were among the many who purchased a gen. 1 IPOD? I had 4 crap out on me, only to have to pay to have them replaced and repeat. Sony's PS2? Same story. I am not saying that this is an excuse of any kind. But it's the right thing to do. The warranty is the best thing IMHO that could have been done for the problem at hand. Throw in the towel? Sure, that would have worked well for them and the other two (PS2 & IPOD ver. 1) I refrenced too eariler also. (/end scarcasm) Neither of the two leaders in their respective groups offered anything close to a three year repair for free warranty and we STILL LOVE EM'! All I am saying is that, I think that they are doing the right thing. That this has happend before, and that it won't be the last time for anything in the electronics industry.

caleb

Got mine last October. It's running fine until now, but I think it's my loving care that's keeping it away from death. You see, I live in Brazil, a land known for its extremely hot weather throughout the year. But I decided to take a few steps ahead in keeping my 360 "kool", like adding 5 (yes, FIVE!) more coolers - 2 extra on the back, helping the original ones pull off the hot air, a small one on the top and two big and powerful below, pushing air inside the console.

I've been able to play all my games flawlessly on days which temperature easily exceeded 107°F...

Call me NUTS but, at least, this homebrew "fix" is doing its job.

fporto

The disk drive would fail to open without sliding a finger on the plate. Eventually it just failed to open all together. I purchased the extended warranty from Best Buy because of rumor of the new chip.So I had no problem exchanging it. They really don't question you returning it, just say it doesn't work. I've got an original US launch console that I bought at Best Buy after waiting in line for 16 hours overnight in the rain. It hasn't crashed on me yet, though Forza2 has frozen up about 2-3 times. Other than that, it never crashes and hasn't given me any real problems...even after 8 hour marathons.

At this rate, I might be replacing it with an Elite before it ever RROD's. I've actually been kind of hoping it would konk out on me so I would have a legitimate excuse to buy an elite, but no such luck.

z0mbi

I've posted about my dead 360s here before, so I'll just save time and link that post:

Hope they get this figured out before the Xbox 720 or whatever comes out, I like my 360 but I'm going to be wary of any more hardware from MS (I had some issues with XB1 as well) until its well proven by others.

DaiMacculate

I had my Canadian launch xbox RRoD of me after just under a year, was repaired in very short order (I think in total 5 days from my call I had it back in my hands) and has worked fine ever since.

xipher

I've had my 360 for about 4 months now, I got it off ebay in a bundle and do not know how old it is. But I haven't had a single problem with it so far, lets keep hoping. The 360 is a pretty darn good gaming machine.

ntrpe

I had a US launch 360 that was replaced because of frequent disc read errors. My replacement unit hasn't had a hiccup.

However...

One friend of mine bought a 360 after all my praise and got the RROD right out of the box. No big deal because he just returned it for a new one, but we both had a laugh over it.

wallapuctus

Bought my 360 in February, 2006. When Gears of War came out I noticed more freezing than before, so called MS about a replacement (no problem. The rep thought that it might be the CPU beginning to fail) and, since at the time I only had a couple of months left on the warranty, replaced it. At first I had a few DVD drive issues with the replacement (at times quite loud, and a couple of DVD'd locked up) but the box as a whole has performed admirably. Although MS authorized a replacement, I didn't want to be without it for a couple of weeks, so I kept it. It has been performing flawlessly ever since.

bornonce
