Lets be honest with each other. a 9 year old kid cannot get his hands on an M-rated game. Granted he could get a game rated teen with relatively no difficulty as there are no policies (I'm aware of) or laws against it (for the time being, at this rate). However, given current store policies, there is no way he could get his hands on that game, especially if the location is a GameStop or EB Games.

In addition, chances are a kid in that general range is not going to have $50 ($60 for the new generation of games) laying around to buy a game with. An adult is going to have to provide the resources to buy him that game. On that note, a parent must take upon some level of responsibility for providing the resources for a child to buy the game and take the blame for such rather than trying to redirect all blame and responsibility onto the developer, the publisher, and the ratings sytem; All whom did there job as they were supposed to.

This entire mess makes no sense to me. It just seems that a great deal of parents don't want to take responsibility for their (simply stated) fuck ups to me.

Thank you. I was just about to write that in my own words. The problem with society today (particularly here in America), is that we do not want to take responsibility for our actions. There always has to be a scape goat to pass the blame over to, and in our current generation, video games are the whipping boy.

Violence is all around us, whether it be in books, movies, music, or video games. However, it all comes down to incorrect correlations in the media and the denizens of uninformed masses who add fuel to the fire.

It would be ignorant to argue the fact that video games are not violent, as a good majority of the most succesful franchises in recent history are M-rated titles. And as others have said, violent kids are going to play violent video games, as they probably watch violent movies and listen to violent music.

What we need - far more than condemning games - is for parents to start parenting. All too often you see on television some kid who goes ballistic with a firearm, only for the news to follow up with an interview of his/her parents/guardians dumbfounded, claiming they had no idea their little one was capable of such atrocious acts. Excuse me! Most of these monster teenagers have exhibited some form of violent behavior over the course of their life. If these so called parents/guardian would see these signs and think to themseleves, "Gee, maybe I should stop surrounding my kid with a plethora of violent mediums."

I've been playing violent video games and watching R-rated movies forever, and I am by all means, NOT a monster!

Granted that the VTech and Columbine shootings WERE due to video games (although it was clearly because the kids were outcasts), that's four people in a population of a BILLION gamers. The point is, becuase there is SUCH a large population of humans, anything you give that population will inevitably yield deaths. Cars, for example, have lead to MUCH more deaths than video games. Yet you don't see anyone forming a mob to get rid of those things.

Whatever, let Dr. Phil blame violence on video games. There is as much a link between video games and killers are there is between murderers and bathrooms. Hell, every murderer on the face of the planet has used a toilet. So does that mean that if you use a toilet, you'll become a murderer? According to Dr. Phil's logic, apparently so.

Dr Phils comments are right, violence is glorified and glamorised by all media as being a suitable and acceptible way to achieve goals. Some kids when all they play is the Darkness, Gears, or whatever else they can be desensitized. A news story comes out about a fallen soldier-no big deal I just played graw 2 and took down several.etc.
I am not saying there is a direct link or causation, but everything is an influence-we do not live in a vacuum. So hopefully people will be mature on Dr. Phil and not come to rash conclusions. Its foolish to say video games lead to murder, but its just as foolish to think that violence injested in large quantities will not be influential or desensitizing. Hey if you think chainsawing people in half or ripping their hearts out and eating them is a fun way of spending leisure game time, fine-thats your business. But to think the mass majority of non gamers, especially parents of young children, isnt going to find it alarming you are naive to say the least. But sound arguements, not cursing and angry immature rants, will position gamers better-all this other childish response will only solidy their arguments.

So single out videogames? Movies, TV & books express alot more violence than videogames. Taking violence out of the media won't stop violence from occuring. As I said before people, more on the male side, are very aggressive and violent by nature. A child will learn more from watching their parents than from watching a form of media. Media is just a way we to express ourselves. If we couldn't fine a way to express ourselves we would go crazy and do crazy things!

Does violent media increase agression in youths? Probably. Are children influenced by their environment and the material they are exposed to? Yes, that's how we learn as children. Is it a parent's responsibility to ensure their child recieve proper guidance while, or is restricted from, viewing violent material? Absolutely.

The whole video game violence issue is always a hot topic, and no ones really done anything big on it in a couple of months. Seeing as he'll probably have his normal viewership, plus those viewers who see the ads and are intrigued by this plague that has infected our children and endangers their lives, and a good chunk of the better educated gamers who'll watch to either see what toxic venom he'll spew or just have a good laugh at his expense. So in that sense a job well done I suppose.

But this will only help to exacerbate a problem that has, at least for a couple weeks I believe, finally gotten out of the spotlight. And if his special guest really is he who's name we dare not speak, than I pity the fool that watches the show and takes it to heart.

The media comes in waves, playing on whatever issues people find to be the most worrysome at the time. They play it up, they get you worried, you watch their show. The only thing we can really do is bunker down and hope to god in the near future they'll latch on to something else to fill peoples with dread as opposed to those awful, brain washing, desensitizing, murder simulators like pac-man.
