That list of Sega's TGS games was 100% fake. The only reason it's circulated as much as it has is the raw burning desire Sega fans have for all those games is clouding their judgment. Everyone saw Shenmue III and Skies of Arcadia 2 and instantly decided it must be true simply because it had to be!

I'd expect not a single one of the "dream" games from that list will be announced at TGS.

Not exactly a surprise. I've been hoping for Shenmue III to be announced at every E3 since I finished Shenmue II, and I never really gave up hope. But to be honest I always knew getting to see the ending of the story was a very long shot.

Yu Suzuki should leave Sega and go somewhere where his talents will be appreciated. It's his genius that made Sega all those years ago and now they have him languishing. He deserves better than that, the fact that the shitty Sonic Team get to crap out another rubbish Sonic game every year while Suzuki is just left doing nothing should be criminal.

for any dreamcast users who never got to play Shenmue II, its occurred to me that some of you dont realize you can just import the euro one from ebay and play it outright (i dont even remember swap-discing, honestly); its in japanese with subs (better voices!) and its 10x the game the first one was, still one of my favorite RPG's evar.

I feel bad. I bought Shenmue 1 for $10 for Dreamcast (while the Dreamcast was still popular). I helped this happen.

It really did sell like crap, and I don't think any used sales made up for it. I think message boards just select for people who've played these really obscure games. As much as I want Shenmue 3 to come out (I would buy whatever system it came out on), it would also sell like crap.

I'll still holdout hope for more Shenmue. I've read over and over about how the series' scripts, pre-production planning and a lot of the game textures and models are already complete for the sequel. Although any of the old stuff would look hideous as a port to a more powerful console like ps3 and 360, theres no reason something like Shenmue can't show up on PS2, Wii or PSP using the engine from Yakuza, and probably at a low cost as well (Shemue on Wii would be...*drools*). Besides, if they really completely took a video game iteration off the table, you'd figure they'd have released the rest of the story in manga-form by now... especially considering the short-stories they've already done in the format. And honestly, although I'd obviously rather play through the rest of Ryo's story, at this point I'm more than willing to settle for reading it. Shenmue wasn't the success they wanted, but it's a valuable original IP that they invested a lot of money into and already have planned out, I can't see a company like Sega thats desperate for money, throwing it all completely away when theres still plenty of potential for the series to recoop some losses.

Saw this on Shenmue Dojo a few days ago (after the whole rumor TGS thing surfaced).

If you have ever followed Kikizo's Shenmue news, they don't exactly have a good track record of being right. They announced like three years ago that they knew for a fact that Shenmue III was in development and that it would be announced at that year's TGS.

Yeah, didn't happen so I don't really trust them anymore.

Shenmue games are my favourite games of all time. Reading such things truly saddens me, but, then again, I've lost almost all hope a long time ago, to be honest. Besides, if they ever made Shenmue 3, it'd probably turn out to be a disappointment. And Shenmue Online already looked ridiculous, byt the way.
Sigh... How can they leave such a wonderful, wonderful saga unfinished like that? "The story continues..." they said, at the end of Shenmue 2. Yeah, right... What disrespect!

@MindKiller317: Just so. Shenmue 2 on the Dreamcast was where it was meant to be played. My wife purchased the import of the PAL version with a boot disc, so I could play it. In Japanese with English subtitles, and it was Great. The gameplay was even more emergent than the first one. Want to get through the game as a street fighter? You could do that. Want to get through as a gambler or street vendor? You could do that, too.

And yeah, the stuff on the last disc makes me want to cry for what might have been.

@LucasKane: If you had played Shen2 on the DC where it was meant to be experienced, you would feel much differently. Playing the Euro import just weeks after Sega announced the death of the DC left me so angry. Seeing what the system was capable of on disc 4 was simply breathtaking. I can never forgive Sega for allowing the saga to end on xbox.

Sega is really REALLY struggling since the Sammy merger. I don't know why, but some how, that merger seems to have just spelled out doom for Sega. The games were still good up until the last second before the merger. Shenmue III...honestly...even if it was made, I'm not sure I'd be too ecstatic about playing it. I really did not like Shenmue II at all. Shenmue on Dreamcast was absolutely perfect. It was so engaging. It felt real. Shenmue II felt more farfetched. Something was off about it. I'd love for Shenmue III to be made but I don't think it would happen. I think it might be time to "Dismantle the company and give the money back to the shareholders". It breaks my heart, but, Sega isn't even a shadow of what it used to be.

There has never felt to me to be more reason than now to comment on Kotaku. Something about Shenmue spurs my heart and soul to a degree that no game has ever been able to do. I imagine hearing Master Chief talking about finishing the fight only to never finish it.

I recently finished Shenmue II last week over again. While I respect that I may never play another Shenmue game, I hope and pray that Suzuki finishes his story somehow. What happens to Ryo and Lan Di? Xuying? Joy? Ren? Just the thought of never getting to spend time with the shitty English voice of Ryo ever again is enough to pull me into a downward spiral of depression.

Curse you SEGA! Curse you and your horrific Shenmue policy. Six years I await the next installment and six years I wait in vain.

Another report that Shenmue's future is "up in the air?" OH LAWD what else is new. I want it as much as any one else, in fact maybe even more, but its time accept that the series is dead and buried. Its always sad to see any time a Shenmue 3 tidbit appears online anywhere (which is a suprisingly often!) and how many people flood the comments on every site with praise for the series. The myth that it was not popular in the US is bogus. Its just that many of us didnt get a chance to play it until after the DC was killed - meaning we bought it used and Sega never recognized the sale. And Shen2 on XBOX was not properly marketed which led to a huge wave of unsatisfied customers
at launch and lots of bad word of mouth.

And didnt adam from kikizo lose ALL credibility a year ago when he posted several massive articles stating that Shen3 was "ready to go" and they just need to decide what kind of disc to press it on - PS3 or 360? This guy spreads more Shenmue rumors than I spread liquid gold on the ass of Cambodian hookers that I then wait to cool and sniff heroin off of! (which is alot - Im a classy guy) Stop listening to him!

But really, just email Suzuki himself and beg him. Its the least you can do.

Huperfludd: no, Sonic Rush wasn't THAT bad, but a short simple on the rails game is as much of an insult to Sonic as a broken, cheaply made 3d platformer.

As for Shining Force, Sega HAS killed the franchise, but at the same time, maybe kept it alive: every single Shining game gets press because people are still hoping they make the next one a strategy game

At this point I think people would settle for a sequel/remake of Shining The Holy Ark.

I'm telling you all - Shenmue should have released on the PS2.

If Shenmue 3 is coming out, it should be released on the PS3.

The reason for this is because not many Japanese gamers (main audience for Shenmue) buy the 360, so the game will sell less to a smaller audience in America or Europe.

@beem: Actually now that you mention it, I thought that Yu Suzuki was no longer involved in Shenmue III's future due to his focus on Shenmue Online.
