It's a niche. I see many comments by those who don't think a gay gaming site is necessary or worthwhile...those people are, by definition, *not* a part of the niche.

GayGamer exists for the people who want it to exist, and who benefit from its existence. If that's not you, that's a totally valid way to feel, but simply "not getting it" yourself has absolutely zero meaning for those of us who do.

Virtually every mention of gay gamers in the mainstream game press engenders a massive "why a gay gaming site" conversation in the comments, which is precisely why GayGamer's there: so those of us who want to can get *past* that discussion and talk about games as gay men without having to justify our existence at the beginning of every topic.

It's about community. If you're not a member of the community, I can imagine all too easily why the concept of a gay gaming site might not make sense. Think of it this way: At GayGamer, forum posts that begin "My boyfriend and I were playing Halo and..." or "Who else thinks Kratos is hot?" sit side-by-side with news posts about Bully's boy-kissing Jimmy Hopkins - and nobody gives us any grief (this weekend excluded, of course). No coming out, no prefacing posts with apologies or explanations: it's an even and open playing field; everybody who visits is welcome; and the community that lives there is pleased and proud to do so. That's about all the justification any endeavor needs.

Homosexual lead characters, especially strong ones, are not exactly in great supply. Negative homosexual stereotypes exist all across gaming, from the depiction of characters in games, to the comment section of this article. Many people don't seem to understand what homosexuality is, that it means more than being attracted to someone of the same sex. This misunderstanding can beget fear and hate. There are a myriad of other sources of the hate as well.

The desire to have not only a shared interest group, but to also have a hate-free zone, should seem like a no-brainer to everyone. The assertion that having such a group is merely to attract abuse and get "good press" seems like another case of misunderstanding, and (un?)intentional hatespeak. Some people mistake unity for conspiracy. Thankfully, the mastermind of this DoS attack seems to have brought closer together the very community he/she meant to disrupt.

In the end people have a right to their opinions and a right to how they feel as long as it doesn't impede anyone elses right to express their opinion or live their lives. Attempting to quash anything perceived as "negative" because it doesn't fall in line with some political agenda should scare people more than what a few meatheads do with a can of paint or a few lines of code.

Arguing about homosexuality in a gaming site is like arguing why Gamespot sucks and IGN rules. It doesn't matter, people have personal preferences.

First off, this post was never a question as to whether homosexuality is morally right or wrong, and was never a question as to whether this site should exist at all or not. This was originally a post about an event that occurred at GayGamer; an event that should not have taken place. Never in the post was anyone "whining" about the crime- the opposite happened, actually. The post contained a promise that the site would be back, and to let the event slide away from our memories. There was no attempt to draw attention, there was no argument that the site should exist, and these was no pushing or forcing of certain thoughts and feelings, save for the ones that the "hacker" himself decided to so rudely convey.

Now that the issue has been raised, however, there are a few things that seem to be overlooked on the whole issue of "why should this site exist?". Or, at least, they were overlooked in the comments that I did read. I apologize if all I end up doing is beating a dead horse.

Now, as for whether GayGamer should exist or not at all, I say that it should. It's a valuable asset for people who just want to "get away" from the more... touchy attitude some individuals who frequent other forums and sites seem to poses. I read GayGamer, Kotaku, Joystiq, and a few other blogs, and between highschool, the mall, friends, and the internet, GayGamer is really the only place I do not have to hear someone toss the phrase "That's so gay!" or "You're a fag" around. After a day of school and a few hours of Halo 2 online, it's nice to be able to find a place where I do not have to recieve some sort of criticism for my sexual orientation, whether that criticism be with malicious intent or not.

As for the argument that gay people should just deal with these things and move on, we do. Thankfully, I've now developed thicker skin (things were not so easy when I was younger), but these insults and, in more extreme cases, hate crimes are a part of daily life that, over time, end up getting tiresome or hurtful. The fact that this will happen is just a fact of life, but it's still nice to get away from it once and a while.

I do not see GayGamer as a website designed to be "in-your-face," nor do I see it as a website designed for the sole purpose of catching the attention of every heterosexual out there. I see it as a place where I can get away for five minutes of the day without having to roll me eyes when some immature little kid decides to speak his very... vulgar mind.

And.. gaming not geared towards heterosexuality? Really?

When was the last time you saw a near-pornographic DOA-style advertisement featuring male characters? Or a Gay Guy Game? Or a ... Playboy Mansion: Gay Edition? Or a male doing such provocative acrobatic stunts as Laura Croft seems to enjoy doing for the camera? And let's not forget the numerous females in... so many games that sport little more than what can only be described as a dish towel and some leather ropes. It's not hard to see that games are usually, although maybe not outwardly, geared towards heterosexual males.

Presenting games with homosexual themes is not what I see GayGamer as being about, either. It's just that that argument is kind of silly. =P

There's a verse in the book of romans that can be applied, but that's about it from the new testament. How do you reconcile this and come up with "morally wrong", much less feel you're in a position to tell someone what they feel inherent to them is a "choice", despite the obvious hardships such social deviancy would bring?

Try to imagine growing up knowing that you are different from everyone else, you can't really discuss how you feel with anyone because you wrought with fear that someday someone will discover you are different. As far as you know there isn't anyone else like you. This doesn't apply to VISABLE minorities because you can see people like you all over the place, in media and the real world not to mention you often have support from your family members. Gay people don't always have that kind of societal or family support; they suffer in silence. This is where a common voice from the media becomes crucial. It assures you that there are others like you, and that there is support somewhere out there. Discovering and being reminded that you are not as different (or as "deviant") as you think is important for peoples' self esteem and well being - it offers hope, strength and a sense of community. This is why media representation (and Gay Pride parades) will always be necessary. Now that video games are considered mainstream and a legitimate form of media (and by extent, game websites too), I don't see why they should be excluded from playing a part in this role, or merely existing.

They just want to make a living, find someone to love, and enjoy their life. They practice the same religions and pastimes like the rest of us. They're as diverse as we are. I wasn't aware of the existence of this gaygamer site, and my instinctive reaction WAS a 'but why would they need a site'. I'm a straight female so technically affected by the kinds of things people have given as examples of issues with non-gay-oriented sites (focus on boobs, mostly) and it doesn't really bother me, but then I'm also not a gay male, so how would I really know or understand the needs of the community?
Technically it's no different to a girl gamer site, I guess.

But I'll be checking it out, at any rate - I'm curious.

As a gay gamer, I often feel out of place within both communities, of gamers and of gay men. Most gay men I have met are completely uninterested in the concept of video gaming. And within gaming, I've met only one gay man before coming to gaygamer. For a while, I thought I would never even meet someone like myself. But then, in fact thanks to Kotaku's linking, I found a site specifically for similarly minded people. I feel much more comfortable with myself now that I have found gaygamer.
And just because I've found gaygamer does not mean that I have shunned all other gaming sites. It is simply an additional site for news and especially community.

But regardless, I am pleased to see how much all people have supported the site.

Take a look at the British Conservative Party, it has more than its fair share of homosexual members. This is only news because its a gay site. No-one would give a pair of hairy mice balls if it was a 'straight site' (do they advertise hetero porn games or something?) so I don't see much reason to here.

Most straight people couldn't give a crap about whether someone is gay or if they wanted to post some of their obviously horrendously-private-never-to-be-shown-to-straight-people comments about games.

Domestic violence is a crime between spouses, but it doesn't affect me because that particular crime wasn't targeted toward a particular group, just a particular individual. However, if crimes are specifically fueled by hate against a group, like a lynching or gay-bashing situation, then those crimes perpetuate fear within the minority and they hurt more than an individual; they hurt society. Hatred spreads and can hurt others' sense of security. A random mugging of a friend of mine wouldn't make me feel as fearful as a crime targeted against latinos, because I can avoid the "rough" parts of the city, but I can't stop being latino. Knowing that I might be targeted because of who I am adds another layer to these crimes.

I have also known a loving commited gay couple who have been together for two decades, they would make excellent parents to an adopted child.
IT is possible for a single parent to raise a child and raise it well, my ex-wifes father died when she was very young leaving her mother to raise 4 children.
It annoys the hell out of me when I am told that as a single parent I am not raising my child properly.
Today we baked bread, sat and played computer games, did a science experiment, talked about botany, had a meal with friends and read together.
Tell me do all married couples have days like that with their child? Do all single parents?
My parents were terrible, but they have been married for years. I was married for a lot less.
Tell me who is the better parent my abusive parents or me on my own. All families are different and being trapped in a marriage for the sake of the children is a terrible thing to have to suffer.

Here's a little insight. I'm 15 and going to be a sophmore in high school. I'm athletic, I would consider myself popular, but not in that clique-y shit way. NO ONE knows I'm gay. (My parents even saw me looking at gay porn when I was 11 and thought it was a phase :P) Anyways, when did you choose to be attracted to someone? Because I can remember when I didn't get that choice. (It being fairly recent in my head)

The Bonobo is a type of chimp (which, as we know, are the creatures closest genetically to ourselves) whose society revolves entirely around the act of sex, and not for the sake of reproduction. They use sex as a greeting, to resolve conflicts, to reconcile each other after conflicts, and as favours in exchange for food. This proves that even in lesser 'undeveloped' species, the sex act has long surpassed being a mere reproductional function, so why would the far, far more advanced human's sex acts be merely a means to the survival of the species?
You also talk about the idea of homosexual love and homosexual sex being 'unnatural', but the occurance of homosexual relationships within many, many species in the wild surely suggests otherwise, but even if it were unnatural, why would that even be an issue? A car is unnatural, and yet you probably get into one on a daily basis. A computer is unnatural, and yet you're using it right now; as a species we stopped doing just the 'natural' things thousands of years ago. It's a bit late to worry about what's natural and what isn't now.

I'm straight, and I don't go there all the time - but, I do check it periodically to see what's interesting. So, yeah, you can count me as a straight guy that goes there. There are periodically some great editorial pieces and links to interesting news stories. I just like learning stuff, personally. It amazes me how people can still, in this day and age, be absolutely petrified of someone who's different.

You watch too many movies. In reality, death just brings depression, shame, longing, false guilt and loneliness.

Talking about maths, you simply can not ignore that humans has to have a loving relationship to raise a healthy child for approx 20 years into adulthood. It is not like tigers or polar bears where the male sperms in the woman and runs away.
