My second Xbox 360 broke down last week. It's currently sitting next to me, waiting to be picked up by the UPS guy.

They don't supply the boxes anymore, so I had to find something on my own.

You see, I bought a MacBook Pro in February... and the 360 is about the same size, just fatter... but the box is perfect, and the irony exquisite, so Microsoft will get my broken Xbox in a box with a big black Apple logo on it.

TheBard

The Wii is supposedly just about as powerful as the original XBOX. Exept that it's 8 times smaller. For a company to make a console and get as much power into it as another that is 8 times its size, is hardly what I consider releasing 4 year old tech. I'd like to see Microsoft or Sony try to make a console as small as the Wii and make it more powerful. More so in this generation than probably any other, all 3 consoles are the latest tech in their respective strengths. And for the Wii, one of those strengths, is its size.

No_Shame_To_My_Game

@battousai2k:

I can't believe I'm defending Microsoft here (I ditched my 360 months ago), but you people are insane.

1. MS does not have a 3 year warranty to "keep from getting sued". The legal obligation of MS is the same no matter how long the warranty period is. Toyotas have a 3 year bumper-to-bumper warranty ... are they worried about "getting sued" too?

2. What sort of "compensation" would you expect to get from a company that sold you a car with a design defect? One Million Dollars? A yacht? Here's the real-world answer for you -- not much. If you have a car with a defect, you will only get it repaired for free *if* the car company admitted it had a defect. Let's take Toyota again... since they sell a lot of cars, they have defects as well. They NEVER admit they have a defect, and therefore getting "compensation" is not possible.

Sometimes I feel Americans live in this fantasy world where hiring a lawyer will somehow solve all their problems.

Your lawyer would charge you more for two hours of his time than it would cost to buy a new 360.

I bought a warranty from MS directly, at launch, w/o ever knowing what kind of problems the system would have. Glad I did. Even though M$ nullified it buy giving a 3 year for FREE which for me is additonal extension for no charge. Should I be refunded? Probably. Should MS have a less faulty product? Hell yeah!

@Mongoosekun:

I hear you. I have been feeling the same way you have. I think you nailed it. Your questions to ask yourself are excellent. I don't think people sometimes realize that when things like this happen their reactions set the trend. If they accept it and even defend the offending company (especially when the company is only proactive to reduce fiancial liability), then how is that going to make them try that much harder next time. I mean the only reason we have a 3 year warranty is to keep you from sueing them. I think this is outragous. If your car had a design defect where you went without a car and had to buy another or rent one, you would demand some sort of compensation.

battousai2k

Guess who's 360 died last night. For the second time.

However, since I'm not living in the US, I suppose I'll box it up and take it back to EB. This was one console I definitely wanted the in-store replacement warranty on.

I can't stay angry though, because there's a whole bunch of awesome looking games arriving soon. As long as I have a console to play them on, I'm not going to give up. This time the 3 year warranty kicks in, I believe.

splines

Well the thing is guys mongoosekun is absolutely correct. Belive it or not even though PS3 doesnt have a good line up of games yet...... I would be so pissed if mine got a RROD type of problem and I had to send it back and get a REFURBISHED product in its place.

If true its not worth 600$. I would feel really bad knowing that my product is going to fail even if I have 3 year backup of RROD. At this point it seems as if the product failure rate is actually over 80%. Im serious its just that ridiculous.People rant about it everyday some owners just push it off as a average type of thing Of course you have people saying " oh mine is still 1 year running and no problems at all" But think about it IT WILL HAPPEN. You're PS3 will fail and the thing is you don't know when its going to happen be it from extra heat this summer or just those days your play for a long time....... the design is flaw Its going to happen in 3 years no matter what. At this point buying a PS3 and not getting RROD for 5 years is actually RARE.

Back to 360 point of view you guys really need to look at who you're supporting here you guys really need to get back at MS (sue hehe so evil) or just don't buy there product

PS using PS3 as the replacement for 360 seems appropriate since it just the idea of what you are paying for.

SolidSnizzle

Just for one of the defects. I'm not going to debate the issue of the build quality, since even the company that makes the product will tell you it's horrible. The rub here is the design is flawed on top of any other issue. I'll leave you some questions to think about.

What if they do this again with the next console?

Is this OK for other businesses to follow suit?

Shouldn't you be compensated for going weeks without the defective product?

I'm not going to debate the ethics either. These are just things to think about when you defend a corporation that's giving you a raw deal.

Look for it and you will find it. About how to find a Falcon. Look at the box - if the box says lot 0728 or later - it is a Falcon. Also the manifacturing date is 07/2007 or later. You can see the manifacturing date on the back of the X360. The manifacturing date is also encoded in the last 5 digits of the serial number (the first digit of the last five is the year (7 is 2007) and the next two are the week in the year). You can see either by lifting a flap on the back of the box (so you don't have to unpack the box in the store)

ALL the X360 manifactured 07/2007 already have the new Falcon (65nm) chips and the new GPU heatsink. ALL of them. Microsoft doesn't manifacture non Falcon ones anymore.

This is new consoles only. The refurbs/repairs still get the old 90nm chips but at least they get the new GPU heatsink.

mx5

@Strider_Seven:

Yeah. The sites been live for quite awhile now. I don't see how this is blog worthy at this point.

The site also isn't that informative about the repair of your console. All it will tell you is that they received it at the repair center. It's not as if you can get up to date reports or anything.

I just received my replacement console yesterday. Took less than a couple of weeks. I was hoping they'd send me my original console back to me repaired, but they didn't. At least this one was manufactured a year after my first one (January of this year) and I think it might be brand new (no installed extra heatsink installed like been reported in refurbished units).

I might invest in that newer version nyko intercooler or whatever its called to help the overheating that may occur again. That and play shorter gaming sessions. ;)
The funny thing with the 360 is that no one seems to remember that the PS2 was just as bad if not worse of a machine (and they were also sued over it). I know a lot of people who's 360's have gone belly up but I know a lot more people who had 3-4 PS2's. At least Microsoft owned up to their problem and is fixing it. Sony still denies there was ever anything wrong with the PS2.

I have no problem with people being mad that their broken. I understand that it's something that shouldn't happen. But the jokes! They are just annoying now. It's like when there's a PS3 post and everyone says something like: wow, too bad sony doesn't have games for the ps3. Quit it, already!

LORDofDANCE

I had my console since launch and yesterday it finally got the 3 red rings. I called the 1-800 number and the guy did everything. Sending me a box and it'll take 4-6 weeks to get it back. He registered my 360 for me. Pretty efficient, even though it took a while to get an actual human representative instead of the recordings. Bad part, I wont be able to play Bioshock.

phalanges

In the next firmware update, they should get rid of the RROD. I know they can't actually fix the problem, but just don't have the problem displayed via the red rings. Just to shut people up.

Moonshadow101
