The advantage of these boardgames over w40k or other miniature games is that they have high quality parts (for a boardgame) and they don't cost nearly as much. You also don't have to paint a whole army. I've just bought the Twilight imperium box and it's quite cool.

Yes, it's much, much better to have a full painted 40k army than unpainted plastic figurines, and I'd really like to play with one, but as much as I like painting miniatures I can't stand painting 10 imperial guards at the same time, painting each mini in 1 hour and having to paint the same color scheme to have an army. I like spending around 10 hours per mini and changing their type.

belger0g

You know, the problem of having so many (180) pieces is that when you need a unit, you'd end up having to sift through a lot of crap before finding it, it's easy to lose a piece or two, and/or they need a very robust organization system to keep everything in order (as well as the cards/tokens/etc. that comes along with the game). It all seems like it's going to be a large learning curve, and a nightmare to start.

Lyner

@splines: i'm sorry, my genestealers eat grey knights like chicken. Eat rending claws, Grey Knight :). I do admit i'm tempted to use them for my SMurfs.

This boardgame however looked pretty interesting, but i still prefer Warhammer 40k i suppose. Besides they kinda slimmed down the rule now and games only lasted like 1 hourish - 2 hours depends on how many guys you have on table. And seriously... it's a blast to throw 30+ dices for my guys at the same time :).

DoSe

Six players? Do we need six players to play, or would less suffice? I know I can get two of my friends to play, another one a bit iffy, and the rest would probably refuse. So optimistically I'd have four to five players. Would that be enough to play if I bought this? Or would it be a waste of money? I'm really curious about this game, having been a SC fan back when it came out.

Shadowmist

Board games are certainly not on life support. And all the Videogame-to-boardgame adaptations are helping it out a lot. FFG knows their stuff, and have made some brilliant BGs. Get a few friends, have a game that lasts all night. Easier than getting everyone's PCs around, and cheaper when the power bill rolls in.

Trithne

@Torokun: FFG hires very talented artists, much of their games are beautifully illustrated. Plus these games take long time to produce. Unlike some shitty Milton Bradely board game you will find at Toy R Us, these types of board games are heavily tested over long periods of time for playability, balance, and other factors. Don't mention that these games they make often way A LOT. The large boxes and all the stuff in the box makes their games very heavy, which in turn equals expensive shipping and handling costs. Their figures are generally high quality as well, from well payed sculptors.

> At $79.95, the six-player board game may seem a tad on the pricey side

Anyone who complains about the price isn't a real board game player! 4-player Catan with all expansions costs over $90 (usually $30-40 per box, 3 boxes total).

Any word on what the rules are? The website link is pretty bare.

Keen314

Just looking at that picture scares the bejesus out of me. What is that? About 1000 pieces (plastic, cards, etc) total? Maybe they should call it "Enormous Learning Curve: The Board Game".

Maybe I'll give it a shot when they come out with "StarCraft: The Board Game: The Videogame".

dv8godd
