Basically what you're saying is that a gaming company should have to create an entirely new protagonist, entirely new character background, and try to hook the entire playerbase on a new character, because a small group of people, who don't even play the series, can't accept that the game they're creating has nothing to do with racism? Do everybody a favor and go pick up a video game and actually understand that you're talking about a main character who has been in the series for 3 games previous to this one. This isn't about whitey killing blacky, this is about a character that people have followed for 3 installments, taking his mission to a new section of the world.

There are active decisions that need to be made in the creation of any game, and one of the decisions Capcom made with this game was that the setting would be Africa, the zombies would be black and the main character would be white. Those are all decisions Capcom made. There don't just happen to be a bunch of zombies in Africa that a white guy needs to kill.

This is called ignoring context. The reasoning why africa makes sense has already been stated. This should be no different than if the game was set in Japan, Brazil, Egypt, or any other country that holds a predominantly single-colored community. Yet the black community is the only community that is making a huge issue out of a video game portraying their own race being killed by whites. You are not special. You are not he only ethnicity that is blown up and sawed in half for the sake of digital entertainment, yet somehow, by including you, the question of racism is brought up. It's absolutely ridiculous, and this topic should be silenced ASAP.

And to conclude my rant, I just want to say, YOU were not a slave. You have never been under the service of another human being because you're afraid of getting the whip. I have an African friend, and when the trailer was first released we both watched it and we did not talk about the game being racist, we talked about the survival/horror genre; and how RE5 fits into the genre incredibly well; I dont need explain this as i am sure every one reading this will know.

Its not racist, in any respect at all. And i am sure when other people discuss the game, the zombies will be referred too as zombies, not (for arguments sake) black people.

When i was playing RE4 i referred to the zombies as zombies not crazy axe/chainsaw weilding spanish people; Zombies.

I makes me mad how easily it is to pull out the racism card, but the truth is that; although we (we as in the human race, just incase someone trys to sue me or something.. <_< ) are advancing in nearlly every feild, however, we; or atleast the majority can not seem to get over the fact that the amount of racism in Video games/ Movies/ Books is practically 0.

Of course there are some exceptions; and these are the games that practically no one plays, because they are pathetic.

If everybody thought like the women behind the complaint the world would be a complete nightmare, its just gross political correctness.

Anyway enough of my blabbering, i may of got a little side tracked, but the fact is that this game will not be racist, the women who complained is blacklooks.com is racist, as she did not complain about every other single peice of literature that includes or did not include any culture of people of the human race.

I can't agree more with the above quotation from the passage. Fair enough, I suppose if you had no knowledge of the Resident Evil game series and you watched the new RE5 trailer, it could look bad. However, anyone who has played the games will be angered by the ignorant proposal that the game is racist.

The zombies are caused by a virus. This virus starts off in a fictional American city, and in the more recent games it becomes clear that the virus has reached other countries. Indeed, the most recent release (RE4) took place in Spain (although I didn't hear the hispanics complaining). The fact that RE5 is to take place in what appears to be an African country is just part of the plot - the virus is spreading. Therefore the fact that the zombies are black means nothing. The protagonist is white because that particular character has always been white. It's got nothing to do with racism.

Kym Platt must be pretty damn insecure about the colour of her skin and the society we live in to make such stupid assumptions. What's this about "fearing", "hating" and "destroying" black people? Damn, it's 2008 woman. There are opportunities for everyone is Western countries now, regardless of age, race, sex, etc. Yes Kym, there is racism about. Nope, it's not just white-on-black racism. That means that an person is not aloud to make a purchase of this M rated game if he or she is under the age of 17. If a parent buys this game for someone under the age of 17 for their child then it's their fault for not doing the right research. I don't think Capcom intended for this to be racist. They didn't mean for this game to have any more influence than that of Resident Evil 4 (the fight with the Spanish). What I mean by that is: Capcom may be choosing these locations to be unique. Many of your zombie games take place in the city, a prison, and underground facility, etc. Capcom has decided "screw the cliche'd setting, let's make something new". So they bring us into unique country into an evnironment full of unique backgrounds and enemies to fit the setting. Sure Capcom may be retarded for straying so far away from the original storyline with "Las Plagas" and who knows what's in this game, but it'll all turn out to make a great game in the end.

Remember Resident Evil 4. We didn't hear much complaints about who you capped in that game (I didn't hear ANY). Maybe because only the Spanish found problems with this (and sought to post in their own forums), or maybe the view/gamers focused on the main thing: Gunning down the ganados for what they really are - Undead and psychotic son' bitches just waiting to get kicked, suplexed, and thrust punched.

I am a 14-year-old African-American (Half Indian) and I say that we need to use the past as reference, or better yet look at the heart of things. Thank you for reading.

Now My thoughts:

1. Resident Evil is an old series and has never had problems.

2. Resident Evil 4 was a White guy shooting Spaniards. (Americans are racist to spaniards as they are to blacks.) Noone made a huge deal about it.

3. Africa -- Why not they did America, Europe and now Africa. Resident Evil will put Africa on the map for young children. Can u believe many people think Afriac is a country.

4. People do not know Africa very well JUNEBUGJUNE so they are forced to put only black people. I's like a game in Asia with more Blacks than Asians it's just plain weird.

5. Okay yes it's violent but we are killing ZOMBIES. I have many games where you mass kill REAL PEOPLE. examples: James Bond (Russians), WW2 Games (Germans + Japanese), Halo (Aliens) and many games now have Arabs getting killed.

Personally, as an black woman who has loved the entire resident evil series (and thinks that this version's rendering is stellar), many of these comments make me somewhat sad. Both for those who seem quick to claim racist intention, and those quick to deny it, and insult those who express (admittedly a possibly incorrect) fear that the programmers had some racist intention.

Also, it seems to me that one solution would have been (and perhaps they have) to simply make both the zombies and the heroes a true reflection of Africa, which includes blacks, whites, asians, middle eastern individuals, etc. It's sort of a stereotype to think that only black individuals live in Africa anyway. So perhaps we can drop the "so if they did include blacks black zombies, they're racist and if they didn't they're racist as well" argument. There were (and are) more options here.

I've been thinking about why this thread offended me so, and here's what I've come up with. Gaming culture seems to be caught in something of a self-imposed ghetto mentality if commentary on the Interwebs are anything to go by. There's this constant undercurrent of, "why oh WHY won't they see that what we do on weekends is ART, real ART just like the movies or the books or what have you".

(This isn't helped, I have to say, by the tone of most of the posts themselves on Kotaku, which tend to greet good news of the World At Large's Views On Gaming with a "well I never, the squares are cutting us a break" kinda tone; and bad news with a shrugging, "business as usual for the poor misunderstood geeks LOL Jack Thompson" resignation.)

Which, I mean, fine, it's an art form still in its (figurative) sulky-teen phase and you have to make a lot of crap before you get to the good stuff and movies have a hundred years on you so of course they're going to be a more sophisticated form of narrative art - but in between the meaningless touting of financial milestones and cultural badges of relevance, goddammned if it don't seem like games might almost be getting somewhere.

At which point, games acquire enough cultural cachet for regular people to start commenting on them, and the nerd populace descends into sub-literate bleating because oh no, the squares don't GET us, our art form is perfect and viable and precious, won't they leave us alone?!?!

Think of it this way.

Say the Wii comes out with a game called "Little Witch Hunter." And in that game, you have a town where all of the pre-teen girls have turned into evil witches. But the transformation is not visible at all. To the naked eye, they just look like little anime girls.

To defeat the "witches" you must use the Wiimote to strip them naked, then insert a magic wand into their vaginas. Which, the game explains, on little witch girls is their "evil hole." Each time you do this, the little "witch" moans with pleasure and says, "Thank you, mister!!! That was great!"

Now, I think it's safe to say everyone in this thread would be made uncomfortable by that game.

But why? We're not molesting girls! We're defeating little witches! Context is everything!

And yet… that backstory doesn't eliminate the creepiness of what we're doing. Why? Because there is, in the real world, such a thing as child molestation. And there is such a thing as people who are aroused by fantasies that involve naked, violated children. You must take those social factors into account. The game was not made in a vaccuum. It was made in the real world.

This little clip of video game was not made in a vaccuum. It was made in a world where Africans, real Africans, are maimed and slaughtered by the tens of thousands. Sometimes by other Africans, too often by well-armed white men like the one portrayed in the trailer.

To let me play a computer simulation of a clean, muscular white man mowing down crowds of African savages CANNOT be dismissed with, "But they're really ZOMBIES. It's nothing!" any more than my aforementioned child molestation game can be written off as "but they're WITCHES!"

In both cases you're touching on something that is deeply offensive - and rightfully so - to large groups of often non-retarded people.

First off. This woman is just that. ONE woman. Her views are not echoes of every African American and black person around the world. So please don't call out a whole race of people for one persons opinion.

Second of all. Don't play the whole freedom or speech bullshit with what Imus said. He sat on national television and called a team of Black women "Nappy headed hoes". We are all entitled to freedom of speech, but that doesn't mean you can say what you like, how you like at the expense of people's race and feelings. He should've kept those views to himself, in the confines of his home or in the corner of his local bar with his drinking buddy. Freedom of speech is no justification for what he said and has said in the past.

Thirdly. If you're going to talk about freedom of speech and expression, then you should respect the views of the woman who feels Resident evil 5 is a negative depcition of Africa and black people. If you don't agree with it, then that's fine. But at the very least try to understand where she is coming from. While it does make sense that a series that takes place in Africa or Haiti which is where I heard it takes place should have black people in it, you can't expect black people to not cringe at the sight of a white character killing many black people. As a black male, who has only played some of the first RE, despite all the reasons why it makes sense and RE4 did the same thing with spanish people that doesn't mean that African AMERICANS will not take offense. I saw it and didn't take offense but could see how anyone could.

Does racism exist yes, but most people have never experienced any type of discrimination don't know what it feels like. I have seen people who wipe their hands after shaking or touching mine, as if the color makes you dirty.

The first time I saw the trailer I had a feeling this would become some form of issue. But I don't think Resident evil 5 is racist at all. The game is set in an area we are led to believe is in Africa, so obviously there are going to be lots of black people there. And because of the premise of the story they're going to act inhuman because they probably are.

I can understand why one would think RE5 puts a negative perception and depiction of black people out there. But there are enough black people in the real world (Murderers, rappers, theives, music artists) who I feel do a much better job of doing as such than Resident evil 5 ever will.

People kill people, end of story. It doesn't matter what color or culture they are, one group of people will kill another group of people at some point in history and it won't always be "whitey" that starts the conflict, sometimes it just may be people of some other color/culture.

theres equality, and then theres equality when it suits your wants and needs.

whether or not the video game mirrors past events with uncanny resemblance (at least to those looking) is a fairly moot point.

you want to moan about it? then at least be consistent. consistently racist, or consistently rational. at least then theres no controversy on where you stand.
