I think the booth babes are great. But, in the true spirit of cosplay, I think Lego Star Wars wins. It doesn't hurt that they captured two parts of my childhood into one awesome homemade costume, but still. How many other people came as Lego figures and/or Star Wars characters?

Thank you Flynn. I totally agree with you. Cosplay is about immersing yourself with the character you love. Even if you dont have the "figure" as long as you love what your doing it doesn't matter.

@Hagglegaggle: I used to think the same way. I stopped dressing up for Halloween at a young age, and I always thought the idea of cosplay was pretty stupid. However, I went to the Anime Expo a month ago and saw all of the costumes. Again, I was put off by the idea. However, after spending a day at the event, I started to see the point. It's just another way for people to connect to one another, on various levels. Then there's always simply appreciating the amount of effort people have put into their costumes, including the really bad ones. I definitely had my mind changed.

Most of all, though, it comes down to having fun. It can be fun making something, and it's fun when your creation is appreciated by others.

What Makes the cosplay is the person in the suit. The suit may be professionally made, it may be a shitty box with Gundam written on it. In the end, if the person can is in the spirit of the character, its all good.

Of course, a well done fan costume is always a plus.

What makes impressive cosplay (aside from bewbs) is someone accurately mimicking a costumes designs which are sometimes physically impractical based on images and game footage. It's like the fashion design version of reverse engineering. The booth babe costumes were made by the people who designed them in the first place so it doesn't really have anything to do with cosplay in my book.

Good cosplay is if they can make it look like it's supposed to...and actually look the part themselves.

I know there are some who take it a step further and act the part as well, which I suppose is the difference between just wearing the costume and actually "playing"

But the big thing is the homemade element. If you pay somebody else for the costume, then you're just doing the same thing as anybody who walks into the store and buys one.

McWhertor is right. I don't care who made the costumes. They're better than the Lego outfits by far.

If you want to, you could make those costumes yourself. It's just that most cosplayers half-ass their shit and aren't hot enough to pull it off.

Androgynous, super-deformed cosplay isn't exactly hard to do. Especially those LEGO outfits. Its about 10x easier to make those costumes than it would be to make the actual characters behind those bastardized LEGO cookie cutter outfits.

Maybe it's just because I was never a huge fan of dressing up for halloween as a kid, but I've really never understood the desire some people have to go out there and gussy themselves up like a character from some game or movie. Call it a celebration of your hobby or a cry for attention, it baffles me. But hey, if it makes you happy, more power to you.
