Damnit people. Car damage was confirmed a LONG TIME AGO. They're only doing it for the most popular cars and specific damage models for each one. The guy is a bastard for perfection and releases the prolougue because hardcore fans (me) love to play this game and check it all out. Trust me as fun as the original forza the only thing the damage model was ever good for was playing bumper cars with a 500 thousand dollar car which let's be honest is damn awesome. I played alot wiht my friends on forza and GT4 forza damage model is a novelty forza 2 plain isn't fun the physics might as well be not there it doesn't feel like your driving anything forza has this problem but not to the same extent. I'm glad they take so long. But weather effects are in. There is damage models only for the most popular cars. Same kind of paint job type thing ast he other gt's select from a few colors (don't like slapping logo's on a car i actually like driving in games anyways i only used it to make a lime green hatchback look really gay in forza) and there is a proper in car view. Please don't compare the two they're totally diffrent types of games.

DNess

Forza's model damage is only the outside of the car. Car companies DO NOT allow their production vehicles in games to have frame and sub-frame damage. Frame damage is a necessity for "realistic damage" which is what KY wants, unlike other racers out now with cosmetic damage. This along with the fact GT incorporates hundreds of cars with full interior modeling you can see how messy things can get production time wise. KY has stated damage modeling may be downloadable in the future for RACING cars aka SuperGT WRC D1GP etc. Until damage can be done realistically for production vehicles (car manufacturers do not want to see their cars being virtually totaled, whomever said otherwise is a complete moron) it's not gonna be in GT.

@denki: I pretty much agree damage modeling may not be as important some people make it out to be. Especially in things like open wheel racing even small amount of damage is crippling.

With that said, Cosmetic damage I can forgo this generation, but it'd be nice to punish reckless drivers in online play that use your car to take a turn at higher speed and ram you into a wall :)

Also damage modeling would be nice for long distance endurance races, but hey, I could never go for more than a hour drive.

teh_bear

@denki: "Does Forza even have the ability to damage axels beyond repair? Explode radiators? When that happens in a non-24 hour race, does the car it happened to get on the track at all? Probably not; back up cars, yes, but not the individual car."

Uh yeah, they do get back on the track after major repairs are done in a 24 hour race. Have you ever watched one?

"And if you are going all-out racing all the time, then you aren't racing effectively. You shouldn't be spinning, period. The only excuse to spinning is that you, the driver, put too much stress on the car, and that is one thing you shouldn't do."

Are you speaking from your own racing experience?

Yes, people do spin cars. I've spun my own car during autocrossing on several occasions. It is pretty easy to do when you have ~400hp at your command.

Also, I didn't say that you go all out all the time, but you do go all out at times. And in a video game, you are more likely to push a car hard since there is no threat of dying. So you are even more likely to crash in a video game than in real life. So there should be a penalty for it.

Rectangle

@Rectangle: And if you are going all-out racing all the time, then you aren't racing effectively. You shouldn't be spinning, period. The only excuse to spinning is that you, the driver, put too much stress on the car, and that is one thing you shouldn't do. As as to seeing real race car drivers crash: and exactly how many times do drivers hit walls and other cars and come back into the race, even after spending time in the pits to fix the problem? When it's mostly cosmetic then it doesn't take long, but you very infrequently see someone get back on the track after damaging an axel, unless quite some time has been spent fixing the car. It is done in 24 hour races, but when you are racing 24 laps in a videogame, there isn't going to be enough time for that. You'd retire. Does Forza even have the ability to damage axels beyond repair? Explode radiators? When that happens in a non-24 hour race, does the car it happened to get on the track at all? Probably not; back up cars, yes, but not the individual car.

@thecactusman17: [Damage modelling]... also alows them to show off the high-end safety equipment that they produce for racing and passenger cars, which are a big selling point in many modern family cars, which is exactly why Ford sponsored the few games out under the moniker of Ford Racing and none of the games have damage because Fords are quite unsafe (the ones you'd actually drive in the game). Does anyone want to drive the newest ultra-safe Volvo? No, they want to drive the carbon-fibre Lambo or Ferrari or {enter name here}, which while are safe, are so technical the street cars don't survive crashes drivable, so showing off the safetly measures are quite moot. It's always moot as you can't get killed in racing sim games- if it were possible, then there would be more incentive to use super-accurate damage modelling. How many games are there that use liscenced cars that you can crash into undrivability- and not like in NFS or MC where you just restart in a renewed car? I can think of Pro Race Driver, which is great at damage modelling but isn't very well known or played because the damage modelling is so great. Unless you have the patience to learn the skill, it isn't fun restarting the race 80 times because your rear end got trashed and you don't have drive in your left rear wheel anymore. There are a few others that only deal with certain race series (NASCAR/F1 games), but those are race cars manufactured to withstand crashes to a better degree than street cars. However, in your basic non-hardcore/consumer race game, they balance damage modelling and playability to the point where damage modelling isn't accurate, it's just showy and doesn't affect gameplay as much as it should so that you can progress through the game.

denki

If you stand still for too long in this industry then you will get overtaken very quickly..

Thats what has happened to GT.. People now see it as kinda lame (well, definetly not the system seller it once was)..
Sure it has nice graphics and the handling is good but what about car damage, weather effects, in car views, customisation options etc?

Denki, it's actually quite the opposite: car companies are very, *very* concerned that people will do something incredibly reckless in a car that they tried in GT or Forza or even Need for Speed and the survivors will blame the games (and by association, the car companies) because a driving "simulator" didn't show them how their riced out street ride would crumple like a tin can if it glanced off a wall at the wrong angle.

Car companies (especially high-end car companies) actually want very realistic damage modeling. Not only does it absolve them of all possible blame (your car exploded in this, why would you expect a better outcome in real life?) but it also alows them to show off the high-end safety equipment that they produce for racing and passenger cars, which are a big selling point in many modern family cars.

thecactusman17

@denki: Excuses.

"If we can't do it our way, we won't do it at all!"

At the very least, give the car mechanical damage.

Anyway, Yamauchi is full of shit. If you are going all out while racing, you will end up spinning at some point (I know since I have done it in real life). If you do it near a wall, you may end up tagging it (luckily I haven't ended up tagging anything). I do have friends that have tagged walls while racing. It does happen, whether or not it should. Watch any 24 hour race and you will see cars hit walls and scrape other cars. If someone else tags your car, you will end up in the pits, behind the wall, trying to get your car fixed. This is what happens in real racing.

There should be a penalty for crashing into anything in any supposedly realistic driving simulator. And the penalty should be bigger than just the time you lost in the space.

Rectangle

It's all good to have damage modelling, but what has been an argument made by Yamauchi (GT producer) for years is that while damage is nice, you're not supposed to be damaging cars while driving them. Seeing as how many of the race series in the game deal with street cars, if you were to damage them by either hitting a wall or someone else, you'd be flagged in and probably suspended from the race due to reckless driving. You shouldn't be hitting things, ever; therefore, damage modelling takes a backseat. That and car companies get antsy when it is shown to a giant audience that their cars crumple at the drop of a hat. Forza's damage modelling provides the illusion that the car you just banged up will still work after what you did, but if GT were to do it, the amount of realism they'd want to include would show how fragile cars are when they hit things going 100, 60, or even 30 mph.

denki

@firelogic: "I played the Forza 2 demo, but I really didn't notice that much of a difference between driving a damaged car and driving an undamaged car.
You'd think that crashing into a wall at 150 mph would, you know, at least bend your axel a little. That didn't happen. "

The Forza demo had damage set to "cosmetic". With the damage set to "simulation" in the real game, if you ran into a wall at 150mph, your car probably would go 3mph max, in reverse only. The engine would be smoking, and it would pull hard to the right.

Yeah, the car should be destroyed if it were an actual simulation of damage, but car manufacturers aren't comfortable with "life threatening" damage done to a car in a game. So ending your race is the next best thing.

Rectangle

I played the Forza 2 demo, but I really didn't notice that much of a difference between driving a damaged car and driving an undamaged car.
You'd think that crashing into a wall at 150 mph would, you know, at least bend your axel a little. That didn't happen.
You'd also think that the people behind the fence where you crashed would react to a car crashing into a concrete barrier at 150 mph. They just kept on clapping.
It was also kind of odd that concrete barrier didn't crack or deform at all, it just smudged a little.

I don't think these simulators should bother having damage unless it is at least as good as DIRT's.

Sparkamus

If all we're going to get is some crappy car damage a la Forza 2, then I'd rather not have it at all. In Forza 2 you could slam into a railing going 120km/h and all you get is some cosmetic damage that doesn't look realistic at all.

When these driving sims can get Burnout level car damage, sign me up. If it's just gonna be superficial scratching, leave it out.

firelogic

@PronKing: Yes, because Forza was a totally inspired, completely original game which took NOTHING from previous GT games. GT will now steal some of Forza's ideas, introduce some of its own and then the next Forza will probably steal off this GT. It's the circle of game development my friend. As for "What about the deep phycis/mechanics?"; dude, have you even played Gran Turismo 4? Have you felt the rear end of your AC cobra step out of line halfway around the final corner at Laguna Seca and given a quick jerk to the left to counteract it? Have you ever set up your Chapparal 2J's suspension to ride the kerbs round the Hong Kong track, ensuring a lap time almost equal to that of an F1 car? I will hear a lot of complaints against GT (terrible AI, no damage model, lack of evolution over the series) but you cannot call it's physics engine anything less than superb.

Unastheslayer

I believe there's been a lot of direction changes and shifts with this game, no pun intended. So it leaves me very curious as to what the final product will be compared to what it started out as originally.

There are new options on the PS3's horizon, and Polyphony no doubt want to tap in to these. Not just for a more robust user experience, but to set some standards in the process.

So what has had to suffer in order to incorporate such addtions? Resources and development time don't just squeeze themselves in unless things get pushed back or nixed.

x999x
