Wow, its amazing how many commenters here are ex-joystiqers. I was one myself, until I was noticing they seemed to enjoy fueling fanboy wars. There were blog posts utterly slamming systems, there was unfunny shit posted by the editors/writers, and like Toasticus said, I too got lured into the 'looks like a positive game review, turns out to be an ad' scheme which I just would not stand for.

I actually ended up at Joystiq in the first place because of Penny Arcade. They link em a lot. Maybe thats where the retarded rabid joystiq commenters are coming from.

Destructoid just isn't my cup of tea (nothing against them, its just Joystiq I think is fucked), but Kotaku has found a comfortable little place in my heart and daily reading habits.

Its funny too, cause I wouldn't have even come here until I was talking with someone on another board about video games, and asked 'Do you read joystiq?' and they replied 'no, Im a kotaku guy.' And after getting fed up with the stiq, I decided to give this here kotaku stuff a look, and have been a fan ever since.

Good on you, Mike, you probably sounded the most well put together and sane out of the three in that interview. Destructoid guy gave me the impression 'we're the best, LISTEN TO US!' (dunno if he was trying to be funny, but the MGS4 comment for example) and joystiq guy sounded like he wasn't really sure of why joystiq was popular at all, like confusedish.

I was reading Joystiq but the main reason why they drove me off was all the PS3 bashing that was going on, not just by the commentors but also by the editors. Now sure I can take some of that where it's justified, but as a PS3 owner, that was a little too much for me to read every day without getting severely annoyed by yet another pointless unrelated bashing remark every other post.

So at some point I found Kotaku and it was love at first sight :). I love your style, and the posts are much more personal. Also, as a Japan-fan (who happens to live in Japan at the moment as well), I love your reports about crazy Japanese stuff.

I also read PS3fanboy, primarily because the news there is PS3-only, and thus the 'flow' is a little easier to keep up with. So to be sure I catch all PS3-related news, it's a nice site.

Joystiq used to be kinda cool, but then it grew boring and tiring. Since then I've had my main focus on Kotaku, and boy am I glad I made that choice.

From time to time Joystiq does offer something interesting, but the hits are way more often in Kotaku. Great job guys! Keep it up!

Destructioid is awful, but Workman is the worst. He'll put up any kind of story to draw hits to the site, most recently the "MGS is coming to XboX360" crap stories.
One a side note, in one of his MGS posts, he was bragging that he had noticed that the Playstation logo was removed from the trailer, like 2 months ago. That was fine and all, but then the idiot mentions that sites like Kotaku and Joystiq hadn't mentioned it at all. I ended up, like 5 comments into the thread, linking right to here, where it was mentioned like 2 days before his post. All I had to do was click on the MGS tag on a recent story, and the trailer news was right there, took less than 10 seconds. But did a intellegent blogger like Workman even bother to check the sites he mentioned? Apparently not, or he's not bright enough to use a search feature. In the end, I got the story changed and a (Matlock) tag next to my name.
Basically, if Workman posted that the sky was blue, I'd still have to go look myself.

Yea same as quite a few people here definetly Kotaku.
I still read joystiq sometimes but it has done some incredibly annoying things, most of the writers have 0 personality (I can only think of Ludwig whereas I think I know most from kotaku) and commentators generally seem more immature.

Destructoid I read 3 stories from it and hated it. Maybe they were just bad stories however I remember them being incredibly under researched and seemed just like fanbait. That was when Kotaku or joystiq first mentioned them I think and after reading those 3 I never went back. Maybe it's got better but it was just so awful.

I guess Kotaku strikes a nice balance between Joystiqs news only and Destructoids completly useless but funny style.

Each site reports to their respective audiences:
- Kotaku the 20/30-something professionals and up-and-coming professionals who want news first but enjoy the commentary/editorials
- Joystiq the younger crowd (teens to early twenties)
- Destructoid the... well... it's kinda all over the place, with readers who first want the funny, but also want some level of news as well

But yeah, Kotaku and McWhertor FTW!

I like the Bonus Round episodes. Props to Geoff Keighley, who is a good interviewer.

I remember the time when Kotaku used to receive about at most 10 comments per post...I used to be a Joystiq reader at that time but now I've moved to Kotaku mainly (I can't stand Destructoid's hideous design). I've noticed that Joystiq's readership has decreased while Kotaku's has increased.

Btw, did you guys get to discuss the whiny comments? Both Kotaku and Joystiq seem to have a problem with whiny gamers.

I frequent both Kotaku and Joystiq, but I prefer the former. One of the reasons is that there is a closer bond here with the writers; the notes Crecente and Ashcraft send to one another give a touch of personal insight into their lives that turns them into actual people, not just a byline attached to an article. The references everyone makes to one another in the posts also adds more humanity.

As a writer, I love those who show their personalities through their words, and as such, I love the laid-back and comical tone adopted by practically all of Kotaku (this post alone contains that humor). The layout of the site is also more appealing: Joystiq is cluttered with links to a bunch of stuff I don't particularly care for.

And, of course, Crecente's hair and piratical nature are a huge draw.

I'm also one of those that started at joystiq and left (quite some time ago now) for my new love, Kotaku. The girlfriend gets jealous but I said she should be happy to be on the side.

Destructoid was something that was incredibly awesome for sometime with its overly casual nature of the journalism. However, this was also its downfall for me when some of the bloggers started adding a little too much personal opinion and adding useless posts. Also, contrary to what workman said, posting false news is not fun.

I used to be a Joystiq regular. The thing that pushed me over the top was an advertising set they had that looked like a positive review for a game, but was actually just an advertisement. I absolutely refuse to support deceptive marketing, so I made the switch to Kotaku. At first I was frustrated that I'd have to put up with getting news from a different site, but I quickly realized that the Kotaku readership's reading comprehension and maturity level is significantly higher. Weeding out the blatant idiots makes a big difference.

Kotaku editorials are actually worth reading, too. It's not like you report on how totally gay your roommate thinks the Wii is. (Joystiq had one such article.)
