All that matters was that he played Counter Strike.

Eric and Dylan: Ignore all the other pages of journals and video recordings regarding abuse or preceived abuse in and out of school. Ignore the mental problems not having to do with violent media that one or both suffered from. Ignore all the other factors that one can find factual information on regarding both teens. All that matters is that they played violent video games.

The kid who shot up the Utah Mall: Ignore the strong possiblity of abuse the kid suffered before coming to the US by non-parental guardians. Ignore the other signs of that abuse he may have suffered which resulted in long term social difficulties once out of those abusive situations. He must have been a gamer.

The case of this stabbing: Ignore the strong possibility that this kid had other mental problems, most notably dealing with authority and rules/justice as it was reported that the fight began over a dispute of house rules. He must have been a violent game player.

These are the things that John Bruce "Jack" Thompson considers when these, and other, cases come up. Not the Truth, The WHOLE Truth, and Nothing But The Truth. And certainly such Whole Truth isn't a part of his arsenal of weapons as his role of "warrior for (his) God" as he's stated many times in the past as being, even in a lawsuit agasint the Florida Bar.

Make no mistake, lies, deceit, and fraud are his weapons of choice. The kind of weapons used by demons who pretend to be Gods of honor.

Make no mistake, if John Bruce tries to get involved with this case, there will be, as there has been in other cases, manipulation of witnesses, tampering with testimony and evidence, and out and out abuse and misuse of the legal system to push forth his own personal, religious, and/or political beliefs. Not Truth, The Whole Truthe, and Nothing But the Truth.

The world doesn't stop and revolve around video games. The kids could have been ADHD suffers, might have violent/abusive parents, hell they could be crack dealers for all you know. Methinks someone needs to learn a little bit more about how human behaviour works.

What is even more implausible than the family owning one controller is the incredible notion that these boys didn't play violent games.

It doesn't make any difference whatsoever that they were playing a racing game when the murder occurred. The issue is whether they had played violent games at anytime. Do you nitwits think that Klebod and Harris had their Playstations with them in the school, playing Doom, seconds before they went on their rampage?

Honestly, the remarkably stupid comments at this site serve as corroboration for the studies at Harvard and Indiana University that video games fry your brain. How sad.

@Mezodon: I'm not going to get all offensive about this, but as others have said there are different degrees of poverty. We're not saying that the family might be scraping the bottom of the barrel for basic necessities; they might simply be a lower income family who can afford living essentials but rarely purchase luxuries. Having purchased/obtained the games machine, they may not see a second controller as worth the cost when said money could be put towards other things.
It's not poor decision-making; the money for a used PS2 and controller could be considered worth giving your kids something new to play with, something like their friends have (thus fulfilling some of their emotional and social needs, if we want to get into Maslow's hierarchy and associated concepts), and it probably wasn't going to prevent the family from eating for a week.

Of course, this is assuming it's a matter of money and not just a case of the parents not seeing a need for a second controller. I know a household with four kids and one controller, and it's never been problematic for them; they just take turns like anything else.

Fuck you. People don't accidently stab people in the chest...especially their brother. What kind of mookie family were you raised in? Despite how much testosterone was kicking through my system when I was 13 I was raised with the ability to see things like stabbing are inherently wrong and would use my vast amounts of willpower to not stab people. I even had the unfortunate luck to be birthed into a family with a Dad who liked drinking and beating and still I would never stab someone. Fuck you...I call shenanigans!

What I say:

No, noting that the game was a sports title and not a violent game does make sense in this argument. Normal people say things like, "video games don't really cause violent behavior, no matter what kind of game", which crazy people say, "ZOMFG! He played Doom, of course he started killing people."

This is being used as a counter example to the argument put forth by the batshit crazy people, that here's a kid who killed while playing video games, but the type of game obviously had nothing to do with it, and so another chink in the armor of the crazy argument is exposed. (At least, it's exposed to people with no sense of how statistics work.) It's not a particularly good argument, but hey, this is a story with sensationalism. You might as well use it for your cause than not, right?

Been there, just like 99.999% of the male population, without killing anyone (especially my own brother). Being a 13 year old with testosterone pumping for the first time is not an excuse. Maybe the kid was beaten regularly by his older brother. Maybe he's a psycho. Maybe there was severe abuse/neglect by the parents. We just don't know. But don't blame it on age, testosterone, or video games - that's a cop out.

I have heard many reasons for teens killing people over the years. This is the first I've heard of it being over a game. This proves that games actually lesson the amount of violence, since most teen boys spend a large percent of their time playing them.

No wonder the murder rate amongst our under 25 age group has reduced by over 40 percent since DOOM was released. Just as I suspected, video games are making the world a safer and better place. Rejoice!

The thing you should focus on is not that it was over a sports game, but that it happened at all. Ignore why it was such a petty cause. Now, do you think a well adjusted teenager would stab their brother in the heart for any reason? Clearly there is the presence of, if not psychosis, then severe rage issues. Either way, surely you'd expect a parent to notice these things. That's assuming they didn't. If they did, however, then you'd assume they'd remove all the sharp things from the reach of their troubled child.

Anyway, it can still be poverty related. The family could have, say, had a budget to buy a PS2 and a game (or the kids could have bought it themselves) with plans to get a second controller later. They probably have the money for another controller, but this money is not meant to be used at that end yet. In that case, it's not really bad decisions related.

There needs to be a level of consistency, and it should be that people are crazy because they are crazy. Video games don't have crap to do with anything. This kid would have done the same crap if it was his turn to play with whatever toy the older kid had. I had to fight with my siblings over who's turn it was to play the console or watch tv when I was younger, but I never went and got a knife to threaten them.
