I think that Disgaea would have better luck on the Wii. I mean, the screenshots for this game suggest that it would be more suited for a lower graphic processing game system. Besides, you could put better inclusions with the Wii remote and numchuk than you could ever do with a PS3 remote.It is just a better idea to put it on the more popular selling system than the one that selling the least, it is just a better business move and would introduce many others to this great franchise.

if anyone still checks these out, its true that Disgaea 1 can be beaten fully in about 80 hours. grinding and what not is no real biggie, especially when your kickin prinny baal's a** at level 3000 after only 80 hours.

I realised that I didn't state my position on this piece of news too clearly. I actually have both the Disgaea games and love them dearly. I'm somewhat saddened that the next game is on a format that's still somewhat inaccessible to me, though I'm holding out for a port to some other console XD

Didn't mean to sound like a hater. I just thought it was an excellent opportunity to point out that Sony seemed to be going back on their word. Then again, in this day and age of the games industry, what else is new, right? XD

@ninjafetus: I wasn't necessarily pointing fingers at you per se. You're right that any of the three consoles could handle Disgaea 3 from looking at those two screenshots. We'll have to see if they do add more content or this is N1 sticking with the devil they know versus the devil they don't.

What bugs me is the people looking at it from those screen shots saying it looks like a PS1 game and dismissing it. The same thing was said earlier about Beautiful Katamari, which I also can't wait for.

Actually, I played a fuckton of Disgaea and loved it. I'm not hating on the series, I'm hating on the proposition that either 1) the PS3 is the only machine that can handle it, or 2) other machines could handle it, but we won't port it to those. We don't know enough about the game to know if it really is 'the direction the series should be going,' but I can say that a sprite based game would have to be a bit more impressive than those screenshots to get me to believe 1). If 2) is the case, then they are making a active choice to cater to the smallest market, and I don't understand the logic there.

Disgaea 3? All right! I'm on board already! Disgaea series has to be THE best SRPG series out there! I mean seriously, I've yet to find any that really compare. It takes a seemingly simple system, and evolves it into a horribly complex fighting system with small little tricks you can do to maximize your team's fighting power!

I am a bit concerned to hear about it coming out so soon (relatively) after Disgaea 2. With it coming out on the PS3, I'm wondering what kinda improvements they're planning, though considering their history I'm expecting 2D stuff like what they've done before. Hopefully it'll be high res and not what's reflected in their pics. The past games were gorgeous, not int he 3D graphic whoring sense, but in pixelation and stuff. It might just be the fact I grew up on snes games, but I've always had a weakness for these kinda games. Hopefully this won't be rushed too much. I'll still buy it though, if just to support Nippon Ichi.

Yeah, the game has 3D backgrounds and 3D effects, but currently it hardly looks like they're going to be "pushing the 3D capabilities of the PS3" like Harrison seems to want (yes, I realise it's just 2 very early screenshots, but I'm assuming this sort of thing is what N1 has shown Sony). I'm a bit troubled by the fact that those screenshots don't seem to be high-def or PS3-quality at all. Being one of the only companies to still support 2D sprites in the 3D world of video games in the US, I think Nippon Ichi should definitely try more in showing the potential of 2D by making HD sprites on a PS3 game.

Except it's not really confirmed for Wii anywhere that I can see, and the game is still far off enough that things could turn around. It looks like either this winter or possibly winter 08 judging by the year on the pics (who knows, hopefully this winter) but either way that's far off enough that the ps3 could have picked up enough steam to sell this really well.

As far as I know Disgaea was never a blockbuster seller to begin with, so perhaps they can keep steady on profit. And believe it or not games like this, and the impresion that these games are coming will sell systems to some.

It is was too early to judge this game. Nippon Ichi would be publishing on PS2 if they weren't going to be using some sort of PS3 functionality. I have no clue what that is, because it surely isn't the graphics, but it must be something. Or maybe these are very early-development graphics and should have never been released.

I really dont care for graphics and stuff... but somehow I cant cast of the feeling that this was supposed to be a PS2 game and it got moved in favour of the PS3 game library.

High Rez 2D sprites are hard to make. Alot harder than 3D models but they did it once for Odin Spere so I wondre why they dont give this PS3 game the same treatment.

What I don't understand is the necessity of the PS3 for this game. I loved Disgaea 1 and Phantom Brave (less so, D2 and LPT, never played MK), and I'd like to give Disgaea 3 a shot. But I have a PS2, like the vast majority of everyone else in the gaming world. Looking at the screenshots above, I'm hard pressed to see why they couldn't put it on PS2 also. I mean, they're alienating potential customers (ie- me). Yeah, I could buy a PS3, but I'm not too interested yet.

Ok, this has got me wondering for a while now ever since I read comments about the Trusty Bell stuff...

What is a "generic JRPG?" I mean, what is it that makes a JRPG "generic"? And why does it look like it's the new buzz-phrase recently? I seem to hear enough people say this about ANY RPG from Japan. Is it the new "in" thing (you know, like putting down the Wii for not being on par with 360/PS3 in graphical capabilities), or what?

As for Disgaea 3, I'm quite surprised that's coming to the PS3 actually. I remember reading something, somewhere, a while back that Sony were not allowing 2D games to appear on the PS3. Or words to that effect...

For those of you knocking this game for it's graphics, just go away. I personally love nippon ichi, they have so many gems that have come out. Each game they release is beautifully done, with great artwork and a wonderful atmosphere. So, the game doesn't look next gen, well neither does the wii and look how that is selling. The selling point to these games have never been graphics, they've been a wonderful story line, quirky characters with amazing character development and great gameplay. However, i'm sure that these games are not for everyone. Yes, if you wish to unlock EVERYTHING in a nippon ichi game you're probably going to grind a whole lot. But if you play through the core game it really lasts about the same as a final fantasy game does. Disgaea is easily one of my favorite games and next to FF Tactics it's definitely the best Tactical RPG out there, in my opinion.
These are the kind of games i got my ps3 for... RPGs. Btw, the characters are all drawn up, but spells are always computer generated. Many spells in these games look beautiful.

you know, Disgaea was fantastic. Loved the game. The other Nippon Ichi games? Hit and miss, but inferior to Disgaea. Disgaea 2? I'm having a hard time finding the motivation to complete. It's just so dull by comparison. Either one of two things will happen w/ Disgaea 3: it'll either blow 'em all away, or be on the continual trend of the series. Judging NI's track record, I'm skeptical.

@Murrytmds: Several hundred? Unless you grab a strategy guide and learn all of the little tricks to power-levelling and the like, I'd say you're looking at more like several thousand. But I guess that depends on what you mean by "trying to unlock and train up everything". If you're talking building a team of Level 9999 Space Knights, all with maxed stats and perfect items, beating the Dark World, and conquering every secret map including defeating Baal, well, you might as well hook yourself up to an IV feeding tube and have the controller surgically grafted to your hand.

I never had the patience for that much grinding. Once I got a few characters up into the 400 or 500's, I began to lose interest; the numbers just started to lose all meaning.

Boy NIS is pumping these out faster than Tony Hawk games these days. I just find it frustrating that they seem to be lazily resting on their laurels and not really putting any effort into improving their product. With amazing looking 2D games like Odin Sphere, having these DS level visuals (resolution really doesn't matter when the PS2's res was more than enough to display NIS's other games) there is absolutely no reason they can't focus their efforts more and make a true next gen game (or last gen for that matter). I certainly have no problem with old school visuals on DS games or XBL games, but for a full priced console release? There's already so many time consuming turn based strat rpgs out already that are so similar you might as well just save your money and replay one of them.

eh their pretty small pictures. its prolly gonna be the katamari route of things. not-HD HD. i.e crisp and sharp 1080p but otherwise...

I like disgaea and all. but I might have to pass on this one. Disgaea can be a massive amount of grinding to get everything done on it, You could literaly spend several hundred hours trying to unlock and train up everything. I just dont got that kinda time and with no way to cheat on the ps3..

sweeeet. I'm just glad to see the series getting another entry. I never really cared for efforts to mess with the Disgaea formula (Phantom Brave, etc.). Good to see this even though I'm not anywhere near done with Disgaea 2.

Oh thank god they are not making a 360 version. I lost like 180 hours to the first game (and technically I didn't completely finish it) and I have been afraid to even touch the second game out of fear that I might not see daylight for a few weeks straight.

And to all the haters out there Disgaea may not look like much but it is a heck of a lot of fun. And it isn't just a JRPG. It is a turn based strategic JRPG. Actually the recent XBLA game Band Of Bugs is very similar game-play wise but not as deep or as engrossing.

Here's my true Disgaea story.

Around the time Disgaea 2 game out, I was browsing around my local GAME store at lunch time. I was looking at the new releases section, as was another guy I didn't know. The shop was pretty quiet otherwise.

When the other guy spotted Disgaea 2 on the shelf, right at the very bottom so you had to really stoop over to spot it, gave out a little involuntary squeak of excitement. A squeak. And then picked up the game as if his life depended on it. We're talking about a grown man, maybe in his late twenties.

At this point I think he realised about the squeak, and made a few furtive glances around the shop to see how many people had heard him. It was just me nearby. We both stood there in embarrassed silence, as we shared a little moment. He knew I knew about the squeak, and I knew he knew I knew about the squeak. We then bot shuffled off in opposite directions.
There's something special about a game that makes a grown man squeak!

ive got 1 and 2 around here from a friend, and they looked cool but i got daunted when he said he was over 150 hours into part 1 and not done. im sure he's sidequesting his life away, but shit man, i just cant make that kinda comittment these days, Suikoden V took me like a month.
