@Bemaggot: I used two adjectives to describe how I felt about the game: Looks impressive, yet generic.

I'm much more impressed by the likes of Assassin's Creed, MGS4, and Mass Effect. Haze and Halo 3 if you insist on strict FPS examples. Crysis, in turn, looks better than any of the aforementioned games graphically, yet seems quite generic gameplay-wise.

If you find KZ2 to be 'fucking awesome', good for you. Based on the trailer, I didn't. Games are well on par with my expectations, but this one I can't help but find quite uninteresting. I see technical prowess, but lack of substance.

Also worth noting is that any creative industry unavoidably faces many levels of criticism. If you think gamers are spoiled, read some movie, book or music reviews and be amazed :)

kryo

@Bemaggot:
Well said. Reason why people have become so critical and expressive is because they have taken whichever system they own to heart. As if it were part of their pride or something. So anything that threatens that pride, people will obviously react accordingly. In any case, if this game is good, then great. Another great game for gamers to play. Nothing wrong with that.

darkserenity

Needless to say Guerilla has already said, as good as this is' "this is only pre-pre-alpha". Give them a break.

Watching all of the E3 game demos (including Halo 3) and seeing somebody trash them in every forum has made me think. We, as gamers, must be ridiculously fucking spoiled. I'm seeing games and game play that look just phenomenal to me, and yet there is something to ridicule or not be satisfied with in every forum post. What is the deal? I can seriously say, I would not want to be in game development right now. Making games for people so critical and unappreciative would suck, and be a waste of talent.

To me it looks really generic. You got a number of UE3 shooters out there that look the same. Impressive, yes, but generic. Year ago it was only Gears, but now you got the same quality in about every title, Killzone included.

The most generic thing however, based on the trailer, is gameplay. Enemy AI seems to consist of "stay put, run a bit, loop" -- except with the big damage tank guy, who just does "run towards player and shoot". What's up with this? To make your FPS really stand out, do something UNIQUE -- clever enemies, group behaviour, whatever... something we haven't seen yet.

We've seen Killzone's graphics on Gears, it's enemies seem to come straight from Half-Life 2... Where's the original bit?

kryo

What impressed me about Killzone 2's early trailer was the animation and the life like behavior of the soldiers as they point at objectives and talk to you under frantic circumstances like it was a real battle. That's what I'd like to see captured, not simply how they make the game look like the target trailer from before in screenshots.

questworld

@hezz05: A "blend between the industrial, urban, grim, bombed out, heavy" could describe dozens of games and isn't really noteworthy.

Gears of War's architectural style was a unique integration of neoclassical, baroque, and art deco, which I found very impressive. Bioshock is going totally art deco, which is a very gutsy move that has produced some truly astounding imagery. This, however, is just generic oppressive industrial stuff. If I didn't know better someone could tell me these screenshots were from FEAR 2 and I'd believe them. It's very competently done, sure, but not astounding or groundbreaking.

Oppressive, dirty, industrial settings are to FPS games as bright green fields and blue skies are to RPGs. Not that there's anything wrong with having them, but they aren't anything to be astounded by.

Toasticus

Of course, I'm well aware of that. It was a common comment during the marketing of Killzone on the PS2. Though I'm more referring to art-direction within game-design. Goggles aren't new. Glowing eyes aren't new. I'm just saying, the combination of the two got much more popular through the hype of Killzone.

And yes, I do find Killzone's design to be stunning. A beautiful blend between the industrial, urban, grim, bombed out, heavy and slightly cartoon.

hezz05

Control issues aside, I thought Sony showed a good show and had more interesting titles than this one. Killzone2 has a long way to go to prove to me it's going to be a good game, let alone a great game, after the first one and the debacle of 2 years ago. It's like if MS came out with an amazing video for Brute Force 2, I'd be like "fuck you" you'll be lucky if I even try this shit.

@imskacore: I still do, I find the placement of the analog sticks on the 360 controller to be unnatural at best. Also I think the 360 triggers have too much tension on them, after long periods my fingers start to hurt. This is also true with the jewel type face buttons. Also the bumpers have a strange feel and shape to them. I use a 360 controller for certain games on my PC, but every time I come back to the PS3 controller it just feels more natural. Microsoft did a hell of a job going from the terrible Xbox controller to the 360 controller, but they still have a long way to go to match the dual shock. By the way, I have large hands and the 360 controller has always felt unnatural because it forces your hands into a certain position.

MrSatan

From an artistic point of view, this is one of the best things out there. Killzone triggered a small trend at the time of enemies having glowing eyes, or at least popularized it. The art-direction itself is stunning, from the design of every character and environment to whole design document of the world, story and atmosphere. It has links to WWII in tone and gameplay (future combat will never be that hectic, I'm sure of it).

Of course, it's all opinion and taste. But I really love what Guerrilla has accomplished so far.

hezz05

@ARboom: The thumbs are placed differently, which makes it more important. The placement of the left thumb makes or breaks a controller, to be honest. And the fact that both sticks on the PS3 controller are right next to each other, and at a lower position, makes it extremely uncomfortable after long sessions. The 360 controller makes it seem a lot more natural, and especially since the left analog stick is positioned in the primary area, compared to the D-Pad of the SIXAXIS.

Yami

The FPS model works better on the 360 controller for two reasons - your thumb placement is in a more natural position. It's less inward, and more natural to holding a grip on a controller. Also, it has an actual trigger your finger clutches, and opposed to a button on TOP (instead of in back) that has less of a "feel" than the trigger. At least that's why I prefer a 360 controller and have never met a single person who prefers a PS controller over a 360 for FPS's.

imskacore

The 360 controller has no inherent advantages over the PS3 one for FPS games. In my opinionall console controllers suck for fps. If you want the ultimate experience then use a mouse and keyboard. Here's to hoping they include mouse and keyboard support for this game like they are for the PS3 version of Unreal 3.

MrSatan

Compared to the E3 concept video... I'd say it looks startlingly close. I'm no graphic nut, as I find gameplay to be a much more important qualifier, but this game looks really impressive. The explosions/fire could still use a little work, but shit, look at Motorstorm concept vs. actual gameplay. No one ever actually reaches the goal set by their concept vid... well, not yet. This game could break that trend.

As for gameplay... Killzone 1 was as rushed as games get. Also, it was Guerilla's first game, and they made some amateur mistakes. Now that they've got time, funding, and a bit of experience under their belts... small wonder it looks so damn good. I doubt it will redefine shooters, but if they can loosen up the stiff feel of the first, and get rid of the glitches and annoying characters, they're golden. Let us hope, though, that they don't try to be clever with story again... their first attempt at plot was atrocious enough that I couldn't bring myself to finish the game. Bad plot is acceptable, but bad plot that thinks it's good plot makes me cry.

Dangeresque- Got temp banned and learned his lesson! (Crazy!)

The problem with the dualshock/ps3 controllers is that the thumb sticks are far too close together for comfortable use by anyone with adult male size hands.

I know that playing R:FoM caused my hands to cramp up like mad while jamming through Gears of War on the 360 was so very comfortable. It's all in the size of the controller and ergonomic positioning of the sticks.

The fuss comes from the e3 2005 trailer, and the media jumping down Sony's throat for putting out a CG trailer that was obviously and completely impossible on the ps3, basically accusing Sony of lying in a huge way. So there's been a lot riding on Killzone 2 simply because of that, and I promise that's why Sony's sunk so much money into Killzone 2.

Nintendo and 360 fans have been using that trailer as an insult for over two years. Now that Sony has come so close to the trailer, Sony fans and ps3 owners feel a lot of validation in our (rather expensive) purchase.

In the grand scheme of things, most playstation fans probably aren't all that interested in Killzone 2 beyond the ps3 vindication aspect. We want our Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Rachet and Clank, LittleBigPlanet, and whatever Team Ico comes up with. But for those who want a good fps too, it's nice to know the ps3 can do those also.

androvsky

@Cartman86: The analogue sticks are on the bottom of the PS controller, the D-pad is still being used as the primary method of movement, which is a little bizarre. Having both analogue sticks at the bottom, means your thumbs are sitting at an awkward angle. It isn't very nice after a period of time. The Playstations analogue sticks are also made out of a strange rubbery material, and are more difficult to grip, you constantly find yourself having to readjust your thumb posistion.

@SORENKIER I agree, the PS3 was forced to come out too early, this holiday season could mark a relaunch of sorts and I can actually see the PS3 hate of the gamesites subside with each passing day. Of course the haters will come out in droves but it's only natural, they don't want their system to go the way of the Dreamcast and MS doesn't have a good track record of staying with their consoles for too long.

The moment anyone makes a game that ups the ante enough MS will probably scrap their system like they did for the original Xbox to release the XBOX 720.

I hope not though, I am slowly earning trust towards MS after what they did to me with their original console and I am actually enjoying a couple of games for it.

otarumx

Does anyone one else think that the PS3 just... came out too soon? If they knew games like this were in Dev, along with MGS4 and Home, they could have left Microsoft in limbo, like the dreamcast. The PS2 still had legs, still had games that could impress, and in that time the Bluray costs could have come down, the entire setup could have been finished and the market would have been heavily anticipating their new console. I'm sure Sony were concerned about Microsoft getting to much of a lead over them, and didn't have everything in place when they released their behemoth.

I think 'wait Killzone.. is good?!' Sums up the suprise that most people feel when they see that the PS3 is starting to get its act together, I don't think that Sony have done enough yet, but look at all their consoles, it takes time to get the best out of them.

SorenKier
