Though, I'm a bit afraid that what I said was lost in the responses to the release of the trailer - so it goes, I guess. I wish I had more time to post here, but looking for a new post-college job has been taking up all my time.

@Witzbold: Take a look at my post on page one for my defense of SA as more than "ghetto gangbanger crap." In my opinion it honestly wasn't (and clearly so in the last half, or even last 75% of the game.) The "Gangbanger" stuff is necessary to create juxtaposition with things like the big casino heist at the end of the game - otherwise the narrative point isn't made. Feel free to AIM me @ WreckTheLaw for more discussion on this manner if you'd like. I must be out of my mind posting my SN, eh?

all you have to do is look at the trailers from any other gta game to see how many leaps and bounds this game has made.

I would also hope the cut-scene visuals are the in-game graphics b/c they were hardly mind blowing.

Another trailer built to look like a movie. If I wanted to watch cinematics of new games coming out, I'd go back and watch Sony's E3 06 press conference.

Seriously, who do we have to beat up to get some actual gameplay footage? I don't care if that trailer was taken with in-game models and graphics. In-game models and graphics can be animated to do whatever the hell you want.

Who cares about gangs and drugs?

Enough people to guarantee the GTA series a spot as one of the most successful franchises in gaming history, apparently.

It's about the writing, folks. If you're going to complain about the drug-oriented storyline in San Andreas -- I'm sorry, it was a deliberate riff/homage to the gangster films of the late 80's and early 90's, which focused almost exclusively on the devastating rise of crack-cocaine in black neighborhoods across the country. What storyline were you expecting, exactly? Al Pacino at a baptism? Vice City was about Miami in the mid-1980's. "Cocaine" is the only word anyone thinks of when you mention that place and time. "Neon" may be a close second.

The GTA series is about nailing down lodestones of the crime story mythos, extrapolating them to their extremes, and letting you be a deciding player. The new one looks to be about Russian/Eastern European organized crime springing up in NYC, in places like Brighton Beach. Fun fact: They make a lot of their money in the slave trade, which the first teaser alluded to. Expect a lot of "human cargo" and ex-KGB guys. That particular lifestyle doesn't lend itself to a lot of glamor, and the walk-throughs and interviews suggest Rockstar isn't that interested in being goofy and glitzy.

And thank god for that. I want to see what their writing team can do with a protagonist who is an actual, genuine, complete bastard... and see if they can make me care what happens to him.

But it's just not what I want anymore. Haven't wanted, really, since Vice City. I grew up, and GTA grew up with me, with us, even if a lot of people didn't realize it. Rockstar saw this even then, and began to work towards new things, starting with Manhunt. I won't go over that here , because N'Gai Croal and Stephen Totilo do a damn good job on N'Gai's Level Up blog, here [blog.newsweek.com] They would follow this up with both San Andreas and Bully.

San Andreas is more than what most give it credit for. It retains a lot of the kitschyness and silliness of the earlier titles, sure, but it is the first step in what will hopefully be a walk towards creating games truly for a mature audience - the audience that watches Scarface and Godfather (2, mostly) and responds by saying "Damn... what a tragic guy. What a tragic story. He lost everything he loved," and not "Damn... why can't I be as cool as that."

San Andreas was at its heart two things: A Class story and a Morality story - and I mean those in the most philosophical ways possible. It was a Marxist dialectic, with CJ returning to the economic low class, climbing back out of it (and losing his values in the process), and eventually being struck in the face with the simple truth that those that own the means of production (Big Smoke) will do anything to retain them, including the use of an excessively violent police force (Tennpenny and his crew.)

Likewise, it is a story of Nietzchean morality. At the beginning of the story CJ belongs to the Slave Morality, which is to say he reacts instead of acts, he resents those with power over him, and only moves against those he resents when they force him to. Throughout the story he slowly gains control over himself and through the will to power joins the master morality: acting instead of reacting, pitying those opposing him instead of resenting them, and eventually, acting against any force that will keep him down while refraining from losing his connection to family and friends. He is the absolute Ubermensch.

Rockstar continued this growth in Bully - a coming of age game that truly allowed the player to experience a previously unexplored sort of interactive drama. It was an action game, sure, but it was also the closest thing we've ever seen to an interactive teen drama. Even though it was a story about adolescence, it was a more mature game than those before it. And yet, it too was able to hold onto the satirical tongue-in-cheek sense of humor that a lot of you have come to love, perhaps to a bit of excess, often emphasizing gross-out humor.

Hopefully, GTAIV will be the next step towards that mature game, and I think a few of us - like myself and those who have posted along these lines earlier - hope that it will be the culmination of those prior steps. We hope that this will be it. Instead of getting a game that caters to those that don't get that the Criminal story is a tragedy (while still being damned cool), we'll get a game for us - and, perhaps thoe that don't and haven't "gotten it" finally will: A truly mature game can be fun too.

Hopefully, this will be our The Sopranos, our The Wire, our The Usual Suspects. Time will tell.

Also, it was mentioned that this GTA should lose the comedy aspect of the game. I disagree. That is one of GTA's trademarks, essentially. If the next GTA takes itself too seriously, it just won't be as interesting. The goofy commercials, radio hosts and billboards are just one of the few things that adds to the GTA alternate universe. And judging by the 'Getalife' building shown in the first trailer, it's still going to be non-serious in that manner. I believe that the story itself will probably be the most mature of any GTA game thus far, though.

Some are saying that they hope this game doesn't go into prostitution, drugs, etc. To that, I say "the game takes place in New York." There should be drugs, and there should be prostitution. You can't portray a seedy city without having seedy things occurring.

All in all, I just can't wait for this game.

i am hoping theres more variety too.. there were too many "go get this, now the cops are on your tail, get here, lose the cops" type of missions.. well really there were just a lot of really similar missions..

..as for the storyline, i can ALREADY tell i like it better than san andreas's story.

I agree with all of you really, haha. It's just that I don't think we can hide the fact that in a game based on underground organizations and crime rings, there will almost for sure be something drug related. It's a big business, and a way many of those crime rings get money.

But I do agree that they could get rid of it for more of a Al Capone/Don Corleone feel to it, rather than a Bloods-Crip/Compton feel to it.. if thats a good analogy, haha.

Some of the things seem like they were just trown in there to raise controversy and sell more games, like the prostitute sex stuff.
