Back up the wagon...no way was I trying to equate the losses of Sony's game division with wht the quality of the upcoming games. I don't know where or how you made that huge leap in logic.

If you had actually read my post instead of just skimming it, you might have picked that up. What I said was that Sony has been making big mistakes in transitioning to this generation of consoles and that making an unrealistic promise like this (1.5 games a day) is just another mistake. To me it seemed like this announcement was Sony pushing the panic button.

However, now it seems that Sony has backed of that amount and has clarified what they meant, I say good for them. It seems that the new announced goal is much more realistic. I hope they meet their goal and I hope that there are quite a few AAA titles that help boost sales for the PS3, which even YOU would have to admit have been sluggish so far. I've played a few games on the PS3 and I've enjoyed them quite a bit. You would have to be blind not to see the potential that the PS3 has.

My last question, where does it say that if you're skeptical of what sounds like a unrealistic goal you're a fanboy? I'll admit, I have been critical of what Sony has done so far this generation. But that does NOT make me a fanboy.

I have no rooting interest in the "console wars." I call it like I see it. It will be a tragic day for fans of console games if one console is a success and the other two fail miserably. Nothing pushes innovation or quality more than competition. That's a defining principle of a free-market economy.

I'm a gamer. Period. I could care less if the games I play are on the 360, PS3, or Wii. If it is a fun game, I want to play it. Regardless of platform. I appreciate having a good debate. But please, don't call those that happen to disagree with you "clowns." Not everyone with a critical viewpoint about Sony is automatically a Mcrosoft or Nintendo fanboy.

You do make some very good points. You're argument might make more of an impact if you lose the hostility.

Try the sales figures for starters.... Yeah you'll be online but with how else? Who wants to make a 20 million dollar game if the are only 3 million people there to buy it?

Price is a problem they chose. It is built into the system to be an under performer. Nvidia and ATI both have video card lines that do this yet SONY is unable to establish a value market for the PS3 brand. That is there own problem and there is not too much they can do to fix it now. They will just have to wait this one out.

The top spot is lost for them for a number of reasons. MS can out spend them and nintendo will simply out design them game play wise. Another problem facing KAz is they are no sega or nintendo. If they are last place then they will hurt even worst as they don't really have the hey I buy SONY to play sony games. Thats a problem when it cost so much to buy the system and make games. Most people don't wake up with new money in there hands every morning.

I say they pick up steam in about 3 years top and maybe it will take 10 to get back in the game. By then they would have a chance to build up a new software house.

2) The statement was very general and the context this one was taken from was a translation. Sony is an international company, it is possible that the list Stringer and Hirai were handed contained numbers pertaining to all regions, and it is likely that some titles were counted multiple times.
3) Rueter's cites Stringer as saying: "More than 200 packaged software titles will likely be released for the PS3 in the year to March 2008, and more than 180 titles are expected to be launched over the Internet, Stringer said." Using words such as "likely" and "expected" definately do not lend to the support of Promises as Luke would have you believe.

Honestly, call me crazy, but society pits better when only TWO things oppose each other, (Coke vs Pepsi, which these include the all-powerful Sprite and Mt. Dew. Let's face the fact they brought this on themselves. If they had released a less expensive system -- both in development costs and consumer cost -- they would more then likely still be top of the heap, and any one who says otherwise is in denial. So, just like with Nintendo, until they do something seriously right, no one will take them seriously.

The issue isn't with the quality of titles released. Everybody agrees Resistance is a good game, possibly one of the best FPS titles to ever be released on a console. The argument is that for $AUD1000, you don't really have many quality games to play. Not for the price.

Sure, the 360 might have a library of 200-odd (or whatever) titles out, and yeah, a bunch may in fact be shit, but the law of averages suggests that at least a few of them are actually decent. And whaddayaknow? There's a good number of games that pretty much everybody who owns a 360 should have, because they're good games!

You need numbers to have numbers of good titles, you dig?

Regardless, I think setting a goal like this is foolhearty. Sure, that may be your goal, but...why tell people. Because then we just get miffed and dissapointed when we find out the American, European and Japanese version, as well as the Special Edition for each game counts as different software. So 1 "game" counts as 6 different units in their counting, and all of a sudden that 200 software games is down to about 36 real games in the next 9 months.

Of course they're counting each regional version as a standalone title. And they're probably doing other shady things too to pad the numbers. And they're doing this all so that they can make some sensational claim that's only going to make them look like more of a laughingstock than they already are, whether they can make good on this promise (albeit through technicalities no doubt) or not.

Furthermore, they don't need to tell us they plan on releasing games. That should be assumed, they are selling us a damned game console. We don't need press releases to inform us that they're trying to do their job. What we do need is more actual, honest to god games that we can buy and play. Once they give us that, I'll be satisfied and not a moment sooner.

Right now they have 16 US PSN titles, EXCLUDING the PSOne games. Look at all the announced titles, plus all the PSOne titles currently here, in Japan, and the shit-ton I'm sure will be out by March and that's easily 180.

200 retail games will be hard. Right now they have 38 in the US, leaving 162. Count the 102 they have announced for the US in 2007-Q1 08, and they only need 60 more.

Then we need to include the Japan-only titles out now, and the ones to be released by 08, and I think they can pull it off.

Let me do some math 200 people working on 180 games for 1 year... expect many mini/card/episodic games for PSN. What I don't believe are the 200 boxed? How? I mean next gen titles are nearly 2 years in development and cost somewhere about 20 millions USD! But hell, who knows? Maybe that's the reason we didn't hear so long from Team ICO, Wipeout and so on. He also promised to reveal 50 titles at the E3... we'll see soon if he can keep, what he promises.

Online will be a piece of cake. Look at all the retro titles they're releasing, plus the PSone titles. That will probably make up more than 180 games once they get the ball rolling.

The same report claims there are 60 currently-available software packaged software titles and 50 downloadable "software titles."

Now, we all know that there aren't 50 downloadable games on PS3, and there aren't 60 packaged games. This leads me to believe this ridiculous statement is talking about one of two things:

1. Adding all SKUs together. Europe Motorstorm and Japan Motorstorm and North America Motorstorm are three separate "software titles."

2. They're also counting blu-ray movies as packaged "software" and downloadable videos and demos as downloadable "software."

Either of those two approaches seems like it would give you roughly 60 packaged titles and 50 downloadable titles currently, and could give you another 380 my March of next year. And either way, it doesn't get Sony out of the hole they're in.
