now if the game had a guitar with 24 frets and 6 strings, then the game would be too heavily reliant on people who do play real guitar

Well... except that not many guitarists play guitars with 24 frets. For me, that would be exceedingly weird.

Are people still throwing the "play real guitar" argument out there? Jeezum Crow.. it's a video game. Does that point apply to Fighters, Sports Games, and Racers too?

Why yes, yes it does.

You don't think these other genres are judged equally on realism? Why do people play games like Gran Turismo, Virtua Fighter, etc.? Because they're the closest to the real thing of any of the games in their genre.

If you don't care about realism, that's fine - I'm not saying all games need to be realistic, and I like a good arcade-style game as much as anybody. But don't go pissing in people's faces because they're more concerned with realism than you are.

Look at it this way. We're not saying you can't just enjoy a simplified video game version of playing guitar. What we're saying is we, as in real guitarists or those who want to be, wouldn't mind a video game that we can enjoy too. We know how satisfying it is to play real guitar, and it would be nice if a video game would at least attempt to replicate what makes playing a real guitar fun, and that's actually making music.

One of the reasons I have held off on buying GH is because I just can't see how it's fun pressing a bunch of buttons in time to the beat. I would much prefer a game where I need to play actual notes. Hell, give me a game where I have the option (and it wouldn't be required, but an option for advanced players) to hook up my own guitar and really play. How awesome would that be? All the game would need to do would be to convert the signal to digital and recognize the pitch - something that my $15 guitar tuner does just fine.

I do enjoy DDR games, which are basically similar, but that's because you get your whole body involved. I've just never been convinced that the same concept can apply to pressing a button with your finger - I mean it sounds like DDR for the GBA, which I have. Though I do admit that all the accolades have me curious... and I'm a little more interested in Rock Band, since it sounds like there's more to it than GH.
@dabu: I'm good at real guitar and guitar hero. Maybe at first, being a real guitar player negatively affected my GH playing but that wore off soon enough and I'm quite certain that I wouldn't be as good at GH now if I hadn't been playing real guitar for the past 12 years...

GH2's better hammer-on/pull-off controls really give it the feel of playing a guitar, that's for sure. (And the new "higher frets" on Rock Band will only solidify that, especially if they allow you to miss notes in a run...)

dowingba

@ffmusicdj: Yes, we get it. You can go out and buy a real guitar for the price of this toy. But are you going to be rocking out to Jessica, Laid to Rest, Cowboys from Hell, or Freebird on that real guitar? Not without years of practice.

People play Guitar Hero (and other music games) because they are easy to pick up and have fun with. Not because they want to be musicians!

i knew guitar before getting into guitar hero. i've also played many rhythm video games (i.e. ddr, beatmania, etc.) that include coordination with hitting a button and timing.

when i picked up guitar hero, i started playing on hard and made my way to expert in a week.

playing the guitar made it easier to move my fingers individually (including pinky) and playing many rhythm games made it easier to get used to the gameplay.

since guitar hero was modeled to mimic a real life activity, with rock band (at least for what i see) it'll be an even more closer mimic to the real life activity (due to the controller) so i imagine playing real guitar will help even more in terms of having flexible fingers and being able to know where they are using frets. of course, having experience in playing rhythm games will help in rock band with timing and figuring out the gameplay.

so in the end, having experience with the guitar and rhythm games helps in a game that involves a guitar and rhythm gameplay because they both have their share of skillsets that complement each other.

now if the game had a guitar with 24 frets and 6 strings, then the game would be too heavily reliant on people who do play real guitar and thus the difficulty would be too lob-sided against those who don't play guitar but want to play a rhythm game.

i hope rock band does well... i'm looking forward to picking this up and guitar hero 3 when i buy an xbox 360 someday. in which case, i hope the rock band guitar is compatible with guitar hero 3 (which likely will be i suppose though i've only heard them mention that the gh guitar having compatability with rock band).

phrequency

I wasn't defending the Guitar Hero controller - just saying these changes aren't all that spectacular. I do like how the fret buttons appear to go all the way across - the smaller buttons made it easier to slip off or not have it register properly at times.

velvet396

Thanks for the explanation on the GH history. I had no idea. :)

BTW the guy who mentioned that GH is harder if you actually play guitar is totally right.....man. The timing on GH is earlier (or later?) than on a real instrument. I've been told that playing on hard or very hard is closer to the timing on a real guitar.

@Billkwando:
"You mean Guitar Hero and Rock Band aren't by the same people? Man I've been out of the loop on these DDR type games....."

They kind of are. The short version is: Guitar Hero 1 and 2 were made by two companies: Harmonix and Red Octane. After they made jilliions of dollars on the first one, they both got bought out...but by separate companies. Harmonix got bought out by Viacom/MTV. Red Octane was bought out by Activision.

In the deal, Red Octane got the rights to the Guitar Hero name and peripherals, so thus Activision is going to continue to publish games in the "Guitar Hero" lineage.

Harmonix basically stated from the beginning they'd be working on a "dream project" which became known as Rock Band.

What each individual company added to the success of the original Guitar Hero games (and what effect it will have on the split) remains to be seen.

knulpm

I was thinking the other day, they should make the Rock Band guitar controller exactly like a real guitar. (Note this was a passing fancy, the controller would obviously be very complicated and expensive to make) But my thought process was that I can learn a Guitar Hero song in a few tries because it's instant feedback. When you mess up, it tells you, but doesn't let you stop. You keep going. With a real guitar, when I mess up, I don't know it, and if I do I just get discouraged, then stop.

Plus I think you'd learn faster because you think you're playing a game, and not focused on learning.
Anyway, yeah, crazy, but if there was anything like that (aside from good ol' "quit being a baby and just keep playing the damn guitar") I would buy that.

Narsil

Holy Smokes guys... Are people still throwing the "play real guitar" argument out there? Jeezum Crow.. it's a video game. Does that point apply to Fighters, Sports Games, and Racers too? It's going to be ok, I promise. Traditional music as we know it will not die. Maybe someone might actually pick up a REAL guitar because of this.

The guitar snob in me still hates seeing people play Guitar Hero thinking they're the real thing though

I'm on the offsetguitars.com forum and there was a thread there a few days ago about GH... most of those guys said they sucked at it because they'd invariably try to play it like a real guitar and that doesn't work. So yeah, the reverse would also be true I guess.

Honestly, I must be the only guy on the planet who still hasn't played GH, but I can see how real guitarists would have a problem with this game. You spend hours out of every day for years training your hands and fingers to move a certain way, and then you're presented with a game that asks you to move your hands in a similar fashion but just a bit different. It's gotta be really difficult.

btw, I am still waiting for somebody to come out with a Fender Jazzmaster controller in the US, like these: [www.konamistyle.jp]

Yeah, Fender makes guitars other than the Strat :)

@JCtheMC:

Glad to see it's not just me. I've played since I was six, I'm still a gamer and I enjoy the GH games, but I remember going to a friends after playing a gig and he celebrating that I got a terrible score when we played GHII. It pissed me off, he knew I could play it note-perfect on a real guitar, yet still thought it was worth bragging about that he beat me in a guitar-based game?

I was dead against Gibson using their guitars in the games, you should have seen the discussions over at somewhere like the Les Paul Forum. As an avid Gibson collector, it's still strange for friends to say "no, I don't like your Firebird VII, you should have got a Firebird III instead" as if they're an authority on the subject.

Or maybe I just have terrible friends...

I'm looking forward to Rock Band, like you say, the drumming appeals to me. I tried to play Drummania in an arcade in Japan last summer, and I failed miserably. I think it's a rare occasion where if you were good at that game, you'd be a pretty good drummer in real life. If Rock Band is similar, it'd be really good practice. I just hope the drum peripheral is up to the standard of this guitar.

Northernsky

There aren't "more frets" on this guitar. Notice they are the same colors, they are just repeated frets. The difference is, if you slide down, you don't need to use the strum, just hammer ons and pull offs, even if you miss a note. However, that's only for designated "solo" portions of the game. The GHII controller will work(they confirmed that in Game Informer), but I'm guessing you'll just have to keep using the strum button, even in the solos. I think I'll stick with my GHII controller for a while, unless there is some crazy combo deal, because I REALLY want to get the drum controller...

Adam

I decided not to buy it, because i feel every minute i spend playing on a toy guitar is one wasted; i could be playing my real one.

Although Rock Band will be fun, it can never match up to actually playing music with other people. There's so much going on that's just impossible to convey in any other way than actually doing it. I'm sold on the drums though. I've always wanted to learn how to play them, and if RB can offer the first step, i'll gladly take them up on that.

JCtheMC

@NOKS415:

While I totally agree with you (Rock Band is way ahead in my book as of now), there is still a lot of information we don't have about both games.

Primarily, I feel this will come down to the songs. If Harmonix can leverage their ties with MTV and EA's bags of money to secure better song licenses (especially master tracks) Rock Band will win. Period.

Honestly, I hope both games are good, which they probably will be. I get the impression GH3 will focus more on capitalizing on the "Guitar Hero" brand, bringing in new players and welcoming them with the familiar GH play experience.

Rock Band looks like it will grow the genre (Guitar Simulator is now a genre, btw) by adding more complex (read: difficult) game dynamics. All the early info leads me to believe the cats who have been playing GH on Expert will get the next level of legitmate challenge (more frets, input selection, etc.) from Rock Band.

possiblymalignant

Different games, different approaches, at least from what we've seen. It doesn't hurt that Guitar Hero is established--even if III and 80s are more of the same, most fans already know it's what they like, and will hop all over it. Rock Band, on the other hand, is unproven.

This is a wait and see. It's also a market that could probably support two different titles, so there's nothing to say that both of them can't co-exist with their own separate fanbases.

Linnard

ive played guitar hero 1 & 2. after hearing all the new Rockband info and seeing this Fender I am definitely getting Rockband instead of GH3.

I dont see why anyone who has played GH 1 & 2 would buy GH3 over Rockband. To me GH3 is going to be pretty much the same as it's predecessors which isnt a negative , but why wouldnt people at least try Rockband first over GH3. The developers who brought you us GH are making Rockband so you it's gonna be awesome. I cant wait

Noks415

This is in many ways a godsend. My current guitar controller from 2005 is about to give up the ghost--many hours of rocking out have worn the thing out. The buttons have excessive play, the strumbar wobbles, and the whammy bar is loose. I've even had to resolder the wiring after some of it snapped loose.

The fact that my original SG decided to hold out just long enough for new ones to hit the market is a sign from $DIETY, as far as I'm concerned.

Linnard

Wicked awesome. I have always been more of a fan of the look of the Fenders vs. the Gibsons. My only disappointment in the Guitar Hero games is the lack of the Fenders.

What would be even more awesome is if the Rock Band guitars were Guitar Hero cross-compatible. Being able to choose your axe would be quite awesome. Also, I think it would really help if you made it so people didn't have to buy yet another set of toy guitars. Make all guitars work with all games!

Apreche

As a lefty, I actually like this design a lot better than the GH I/II guitars. I'm sure the volume knobs and pickup switch (?) will get in the way a little, but the location of the tremolo bar is MUCH better. It's still offset, but it's in a much friendlier location.
Unfortunately the body shape for lefties is less friendly than the SG and explorer (depending on if they put a strap peg on the back), but almost any left handed guitar player has already dealt with this problem in the past.

GoKeithGo

"2)if you're looking at your fingers to play, you're already losing - and in the case you lost your place on the fretboard, I've never had a problem seeing the brightly colored buttons on the GH guitar."

That doesn't mean others haven't. I have a very difficult time stretching my ring finger without my other fingers moving and I occasionally look down at the guitar to see where my fingers are. I also struggle with terrible hand coordination which keeps me from learning to play a real guitar (that and my lack of rhythm).

I also play the guitar very high up on my chest, I may be able to see the color of the buttons out of the corner of my eye now that they wrap around.

@velvet396: Wow...been playing Guitar Hero a lot lately? Does it really upset you that much, that these developers have are coming out with something that might blow Guitar Hero out of the water? I mean, when I look at that peripheral verses the Guitar Hero version I can clearly see a quality difference.

Be happy someone is driving the genre forward.

vindicated

"see what exactly you the heck you are pressing"
Three things:
1)wow - don't drink before posting in the morning.
2)if you're looking at your fingers to play, you're already losing - and in the case you lost your place on the fretboard, I've never had a problem seeing the brightly colored buttons on the GH guitar.
3)@Dudes_McGee: There was a third party guitar that had little set of higher fret buttons, but they were literally like buttons, instead of stretching all the way across.

velvet396
