Gawd, the Wiimote battery life is pathetic. I've went through boxes of batteries. Being that Nintendo is only claiming "cutting edge" in the environmental/energy used dept., maybe they should do something about that Wiimote and its dying every 2 hours.

hmm.. rumble is nice, and i'd definetly get a rumble version if it came out.

but as it is.. i dont really care.

rumble is totally overrated.

most of the time i dont even notice it. and i have even played games where i preferred to turn the rumble off.

how many games have you played where the rumble was necessary.

almost none.

in my opinion the motion controls are WAY better.

if sony cant get the battery to last a long time, i say just forget about it.

if your going to do rumble.. do it differently somehow.

like.. how about a rumble body suit that lets you know EXACTLY where you got shot.

nah. i wouldnt want that either. it would look SO rediculous.

almost as rediculous as people look playing the wii.

joelface

Are there actually people out there who don't use rechargeable 360 batteries? That's madness!

I have 1 rechargeable battery, and the play + charge kit, that just connects the controller to ANY USB port and charges the battery, even while I'm playing. So I have a great, rumbly wireless controller most of the time, and a great rumbly controller with a cord a small fraction of the time.

That's what the PS3 controller should end up like if it gets rumble. (Except without the option to swap in a different batter if you want).

But frankly, I'd support rumble for the PS3 if only for the weight, seriously. The controller feels like I got it from a plastic egg from a gumball machine for pete's sake.

Jawajoey

I was one of the people who was angry about the lack of rumble, I continue to want rumble and am holding off on a PS3 because of that and the price, and I am excited that it is coming back. There have always been several people who do not like rumble, just as there are several people who do not want online games. If you look back at comment history, most people are usually fairly consistent with their attitudes about rumble and online play.

Also, I am not very concerned about battery life when it comes to a rechargable controller. I have a big problem with the Wii and its battery munching. I am probably going to ask for a couple of rechargable packs from my wife for the holidays this year.

kingofallcosmos

@YoRone22:
I don't know man I have a 360 and although the sticks and triggers are great, that D-Pad sucks balls. Probably the worst implementation that I've ever come across, followed closely by (dah-dah): the "controller s" and the gamecube pad (I liked that but it was designed for a leeeetle perrrson).
If you play Pro Evo or street fighter 2 on your 360 then you are screwed. I've given up on those and gone back to playing my ps2 versions. It was just too frustrating. Just my opinion.

krisb

24hrs battery life with rumble enabled is about right. No-one wants a wireless controller that needs to be attached to the console by a wire. That's kind of an bad publicity move.

My 360 pad has never had the rumble switched off and lasts more than long enough. It gives enough warning that I can simply pause and swap out the battery pack when needed. Maybe sony can simply add a battery pack to the new controller and a battery charger on the side.

Oh and Nintendo! Don't think you get off scott free! Where the heck is YOUR rechargeable battery pack?

penhalion

Bad battery life? Sounds familiar. Hey, Sony, anyone with a Wiimote is familiar with short battery life, so don't let that hold you back. Just pack in a sensibly long USB cable and we'll call it done, okay?

@Runna: It's not like my bedroom is much farther than the TV, it's just on the other side of the wall. And how many times do you change games anyway when you sit to play. I just play 1 game per sitting usually. Usually I don't even change out until I get a new game.

@Papabear434: yeah man...I always charge the controller at my computer also, since I leave that on at all times.

I got 2 controllers now, wouldn't mind upgrading when the rumble comes out. Also pretty excited about time crisis4. I don't know why gun games are not popular, but I love gun games. Bought most of the gun games for the ps2, unfortunately some of the sorrier gun games also. I hope the pads on the guncon3 is good quality though. It has a lot of potential to be used in first person shooter games.

What? No. Double As are great. Buy a big pack, switch them in when the old ones die. No having to play wired because you forgot to charge it, or it ran out in the middle of your session. No having to deal with the LiOn battery degrading to nothing over a year and a half.

To be honest, one of my biggest problems with the Sixaxis is that it doesn't support double as. I have no problem with the lack of rumble.

rateoforange

I can't see why rumble support couldn't be patched into any game that allows downloadable content. I am already willing to lay money on the fact that games like Resistance will get a patch allowing for Sony's version of Achievements to activate (whether or not they backlog for the achievements you already have in-game is another question) so I don't think it would be long before it gets rumble support as well.

Especially since they probably knew (being a Sony related studio) that the embargo on rumble tech was only going to be limited to the length of the lawsuit. They should worry less about hardware improvement and focus on making the software keep up with what's already there, like making games that don't require split screen (like Calling all Cars) but can be played at 7 offline. That would appeal buyers, not rumble that can already be found in other consoles. There is plenty of things that the PS3 could do right now that can't be done elsewhere. Even the card readers can be used for gaming: Nintendo used the SD card for custom soundtracks in a their offroad game!

FP_slomo788

@TheIrishNinja:

The biggest reason I want rumble in my PS3 controller is actually to add a little weight to it. I hardly ever use the motion controls in Motorstorm or Warhawk because of it.

Not that they aren't good. They are very sensitive, fine tuned, all sorts of good stuff. But the controller is so light, it makes it to easy to over correct. I end up sweeping one way to hard and then turning way to far the other way to compensate.

With a little heft to it, I may have less of a struggle with it.

@Action-Bastard:

15 hours would suck. With as much as I play my PS3 right now, I have yet for a controller to even get into the halfway charge mark. I usually just use one controller and leave the other plugged in all the time. When one starts wearing down, I switch them out. And that only happens maybe once a month. That's DAMN good.

Not that I ever game for more than a couple hours anymore (I have a wife and kid, and they tend to get grumpy if Dad spends more than half an hour on,) but I would be greatly disappointed if my controllers started running down on the rare occasion I have folks over for a game party.

I think the limiting factor in battery life has to be the size. The 360 controller is shaped fairly large, but it's battery sits vertically along the middle where it's not noticed. They can add a decent sized battery pack there.

The Sixaxis has the battery horizontally between the hand grips, so there is only so much space in that bridge when you take into account all the buttons and motion sensors (that really HAVE to be in the middle.)

Why they can't put the battery in two seperate packs on either side in the handle, I don't know. They probably just want to even out the weight, so it's not tiresome to hold, but I WANT the weight...

Ok, pointless long rant done.

PapaBear434

Is it that important for a person to be able to play continuously, so they don't need to let go of the controller to use the bathroom? Wireless is cool, but unless you require the person to do serious twisting and turning motions, just give it a cord and avoid battery life issues. Let's face it, AA batteries are really the only batteries feasible for a handheld controller; D and C batteries are heavy, making motion based controls like lifting weights. A good compromise would be a USB chargeable controller too, like with the 360.

Slomo, for your own good, shutup. I'm all for PS3, but don't do that idiotic price thing, considering some people don't buy any of that... (well AA batteries, I guess)
And considering you have to buy an HDMI cable for PS3 if you do what Sony wants you to do.
Personally I've never missed rumble on the PS3. The only game where I've ever really thought that it completely complemented the game was REZ and Space Channel 5, though it made SC5 a LOT less challenging.

For shooters its pretty much worthless as it doesn't really add to the experience as much as it should. If it were a linear feedback (i.e. recoil motion) though then I would be on the other side of the fence. The only place that traditional rumble (two offset weighted motors) really works is in driving games (mostly offroad) and air combat games, though the power in most motors doesn't really give as much feedback as you might like.

To be honest, the best rumble I've ever used is the N64 original rumble pack, which was really quite awesome with Starfox 64, though that could be just good memories!

The place I would personally love to see feedback motors would be in the new Namco G-Con 3 guns! Proper arcade style recoil in those things would be amazing!

Flazh

Obviously I'll mention the three: Resistance (Still fun BTW), Motorstorm, Oblivion (Yes, I know... year old...360... buts its fun and I didn't play it on 360, so woopie) But since rumble is coming out later this year(I guess), I was aiming toward future releases: Lair, Heavenly Sword, DLC, others (listing bores me).

@Kosher Infidel:
And I'm not trying to argue, but no...I really don't miss rumble... Hell, it should have been there, but defiantly wasn't a big hit for me. I was playing the 360 at my friends (playing Oblivion) and I really didn't even notice rumble at first, and when I did it added nothing... (for me anyway). GT, and maybe MGS are the only ones that come to mind for rumble, but I'll use a wheel for GT and Kojima is the best developer ever so he'll make something work without rumble anyway.

Rumble is nice, but the motion control of SIXAXIS (when used properly, not tacked on) is as nice as rumble. I like to think I am like many PS360 owners. I enjoy rumble when playing my 360 and don't miss it when playing my PS3. MotorStorm with motion control on is great. Do I yearn for rumble on my PS3? Nope. Would it be a nice addition? I'd rather they not include rumble in their new controllers and focus on other things like videogames. Or at least make the "rumble" very strong and actually make it immersive in games. I didn't like the idea of having no rumble at first but after playing for a while i don't really care for it. I will care when they do another type of force feedback that makes you feel like you're getting slashed with a sword. that would be more immersive than anything else out there. lol

silentknome
