Customers tend to stay away from confusion. Sony doesn't seem to know what they wanna release and keep changing and rechanging the system for every territory as well as the same territory.

Their management is in chaos. Reminds me of this place I used to work at a while ago. It is no wonder why that system is having this kind of representation on the market. And a large number of their sales come from the initial stages due to launch hype when people were trying to resell 'em on eBay and stuff like that for profit.

They'll be lucky to break 7 million in worldwide sales this year with all these mangle-ups.

Who gives a rats ass.If someone is even basicly familiar with PC's, and know they can replace the PS3 HD anytime they want with a bigger drive then they are all set.Putting a 120 gig or larger drive in a PS3 would cost peanuts to do if one chose to do it themselves.

If you were to look at the actual specifications, you would see that the PS3 BD loads data significantly more slowly than the 360 DVD drive. That is the reason Bethesda used redundant data on their release of Oblivion.

It is not a huge difference but it is a real difference. Both machines have a lot of RAM so getting all the needed data off of the disk takes time. Every bit of speed helps.

And your 72MB/s figure is WAAAAY off. Most people don't have hard drives that can read that fast. If my math is correct, PS3 can read at a maximum of 13MB/s (8 times more if you measure it in Mb) whereas the 360 can pull data at 16MB/s.

So the 360 optical drive can extract game data 20% faster.

A game with a 5 second wait between matches/environments on the PS3 will be able to switch in 4 seconds on a 360.

When you are playing a game, seconds count 'cause I hate waiting.

Sigh - surely it's because 60GB hard drives are actually easier to come by than 40Gb hard drives?

And 80GB ones probably cost less than 60GB disks did when they started making the PS3.

Old components become more expensive when they are not as popular. I imagine it would cost Sony a lot more to put a 5GB hard disk in instead of the 80GB one!

Seriously - why not? I mean who actually cares? If they want to make the drive bigger then cool. Doesn't do anyone any harm. If you take every Sony decision and rank them in order by how much they deserve a 'Why, Sony? Why?', whis one pretty much comes bottom of the list.

(If they release this model in the US, wouldn't make sense as a price drop - nobody bought 20GB one when it was $100 less, why would people buy the 60GB one at $50 less? - but would entirely make sense as a replacement for 60GB model at same price given loss of backward compatibility.)

The 60GB PS3 will never see the light of day in Korea. It is also probably indicative of a future change for all PS3 models everywhere in the near future.
Furthermore, since the price of the new 80GB PS3 in Korea is around $540 US, you are witnessing the streamlining of the manufacturing process at work.
So, I believe that the reason for the 80GB model is not to introduce a new model but as a replacement for the 60GB, which in terms of manufacturing possibly has no significant, if any, cost difference.

Bundle this model with a game or maybe the GT and tekken downloads from the PS store and charge 600 for it. Lower the 60 gig to 525-550 range. If they are becoming cheaper to manufacture you may as well take more losses to increase your marketshare now before the other systems get too far ahead of you. This holiday season will be likely be the most important and the PS3 will need to be more attractive than it is now.

so, this is what im thinking(except the gold lining)

-20 gb totally phased out, replaced by 60 GB
-80 gb replaces 60 gb, gets a gold lining on the front instead of silver(lol)
-60 gb price goes down to 450 this fall
-80 gb price goes down to 550 this fall after releasing for 600.

20 added gigs does not make the console anymore appealing, but if there was a price reduction on the 60 gig model than that would be good. But i highly doubt it since there really isn't a difference in the manufacturing costs, so im guessing the 80 gig model would just replace the 60 gig one.

Who else here doesn't think there is any chance an extra 20 gigs on the HDD would merit another model of the PS3 (raises hand).

Its pointless, thus I think the obvious truth is that this will simply replace the 60 gig version. Its not like the extra 20 gigs will break sony's bank. But it would slightly dwarf the 360's Elite HDD size advantage.

If the 60GB is $550 and the 80GB is $600, there needs to be a little more than 20GB to justify that price. If it's something I can't add for cheap (kinda like Microsoft's ridiculously priced $180 120GB HD), then I'll be upset.

I'd be happy if they bundled a headset with the $600 80GB version, though. More people need headsets online anyway. Maybe throw in an extra controller, component and/or HDMI cable, rumble (too soon?), or something else.
