Yeah, pity the nerd who sits back clutching 1st or 2nd ed. D&D over 3.5. You want to talk cluster f***? Every play Mythus?

Nostalgia is great - it's still paper and dice, after all. But the rules are better, now.
1 & 2nd ed max levels based on race and 18(%%) str? Good riddance.

I assume they did 2nd ed so they could dumb down the movement rules for the game. Any more info on why they went with an older system?

Kuromimi

Oh, and yeah...3/3.5 beats the living HPs out of 2nd edition. However, I cannot fault anyone for 1st edition nostalgia! ^_^

crayonshinobi

Is Marlon Wayans gonna be in this one? He was so good in the first edition it was very exciting.
The thing that irritates me the most about D&D video games is they simplify thieves to the point where all they do is pick locks and backstab. Where are all the neat abilites like climbing walls and reading languages. We need more multiple solution puzzles out there. And not just "steal the key" or "kill the guy to get the key"
There are some things that changed and had nothing to do with the rules that threw people off, and Wizards has done some evil along with the good that is 3.5. I totally thought 3.5 was a money grab until I went over, and I've never looked back.

I think a lot of 2e players don't like the high fantasy turn the art took after 2nd eds relatively realistic works, and some flavor elements were lost in translation. But, I have to agree... 3.5 is much more streamlined without necessarily being dumbed down.

Crimson (PS3 ID Black--Tiger)

Alignments mattering is hardly new to tactical RPGs - check out the likes of Tactics Ogre, in which elemental alignment is a big factor on damage you do in battle etc.

I'm worried, though, about how well this game captures the D&D combat system. The screenshots (not the ones here, since I seem to have failed my spot check for them) seem to suggest we have a pretty standard move/cast/whack system.

This is a shame, since in D&D, you can do all sorts of weird and wacky stuff, like ready actions to interrupt opponents (e.g. prepare to shoot a disruptive missile at a wizard the moment he starts casting a spell), use grapple/bull rush/overrun to push or toss smaller opponents out of the way, do aid another to make it easier for another PC to hit the enemy, throw rope lassos, and so on.

FhnuZoag

2e was a mess, but 3e/3.5e killed a lot of spirit; it streamlined too much; every last damned thing had a massive chart attached. Really, D&D just had a hard time of itself ever since WotC discovered Magic cards and how people apparently like complex rule combos.

imaria

As if it wasn't obvious enough upon release (e.g., from the exodus of players towards other gaming systems), TSR has gone on record as saying that 2e meant to be a heavily-censored, dumbed down version of D&D targetted specifically at mentally challenged children. I have no idea as to what 2.5e was to be (I think all the "authors" of that monstrosity were lynched).

BD&D was fine. 1e expanded upon it, but in a less less than cohesive way. 3e/3.5e streamlined and clarified 1e. It's only the mental midgets who knew nothing but 2e that complain that 3e/3.5e actually has, y'know, rules.

On topic, D&D Tactics looks good, apart from speed (or lack thereof). How about something that plays as fast as the Gold Box games?

emag
