While we can obviously point out the overreaction of his school and the police, what saddens me more is that his parents didn't hesitate before they turned in their own son to the authorities.

Did they not think about what effect their actions would have? Didn't they think this would ruin their son's life and maybe even his future? If my own kids did this, my first thought wouldn't be "OMG! MY SON IS GOING TO COMMIT MASS MURDER!", but to ask "hey neat, whatcha making there?".

This situation is almost understandable if a school official caught this kid doing it on school grounds, but for his own parents to act this way indicates that this kid didn't have much of a relationship with his parents.

ojisan

I think all developers involved in creating True Crime: Streets of L.A. need to be arrested and detained for questioning until further notice for enabling hundreds of thousands of teens to practice rampaging the streets of L.A. And then arrest and detain those teens as well for practicing rampaging the streets of L.A.

@Darthvinder:
College calculus, huh? Well then, what is dy/dx if y = x^2? Can't do that, now can you?

dy/dx = 2x, by power rule for differentiation.

By definition of the derivative, we can take:
lim(h->0) [f(x+h)-f(x)]/h =
lim(h->0) [(x+h)^2 - x^2]/h =
lim(h->0) [x^2 + 2xh + h^2 - x^2]/h =
lim(h->0) [2xh + h^2]/h =
lim(h->0) 2x + h = 2x, the final answer.

Now, my turn: Without appealing to the orthogonality of a basis of eigenvectors, can you prove that the 2-norm of a complex valued, normal matrix A is equal to its spectral radius? (where a normal matrix is such that (A^H)A = A(A^H), where A^H is the Hermetian of A).

ninjafetus

I've been reading comments on this story on other sites, and there are parents claiming this kid made a mistake. NO. This high school student did not make any mistake. He programmed and designed a map for a game. People are so paranoid that they've completely lost their senses. This kid should NOT even be punished. The kid and his family should be compensated financially by all involved authorities for all this junk they're going through.

People make mods for real places all the time, including schools, malls, houses. The map in question also was created long before the VA tragedy. The authorities are the ones that should be punished. The parents and people that think this kid should be punished should be punished themselves.

kirstpo

In my primary school days, we used to play Germans and Allies in our school playground. We used to machine gun the **** out of each other - of course the bossiest kid would always win :)

And in high school, the arm force cadets would march around in the playground with rifles with live rounds. Even worse they would spend half the time shouting at each other. In Winter, the more anarchic members of our school would throw snowballs over the wall/high fence while the cadets were standing to attention, while shouting "Incoming!" and running away. For the same reason, using the outdoor toilets with walls but no roof was not a good idea.

brainjacked

In typing class (yep ... I'm so old I took "typing" before it was called "keyboarding"), the teacher told us to "free type." I typed out Descendents, Misfits and Alice Cooper lyrics. And of course -- even though she wasn't going to read them -- she read what I had typed after I left class (I'm still not sure what she was doing scrounging around in the trash unfolding crumpled papers). I received detention every day for a week and had to have a session with the school counselor. I thought that was unjust. What's happening to the kid in Texas? That's insane. A world gone mad, indeed.

Sloopydrew

http://rapidshare.com/files/29195663/clmbsp.rar.html
http://www.MegaShare.com/165325
GL HF with it, there are no textures included so it will be quite purple. But you'll still get a general idea.

Also, to people who said the mapmaker was stupid to create it after VTech - he didn't. He made it BEFORE, it was only reported AFTER Vtech.

@MrFap-Fap: Have you been to Texas? I lived there for 4 months. Round Rock. It has, likely, the nicest people on the face of the Earth, short of my 60 year old Thai landlady who was bipolar and in love with my brother, and found my Japanese fascination personally offensive, not to mention the occasional jerk you'll find anywhere... With the exception of her, I've never been to a nicer place in my life... Lubbock was a good runner up, too, but I didn't spend much time there... The third nicest place would have to be Fiji. My time spent in Dreketi (sp?) was really great. Talk about nice people. Some of the biggest jerks I've met are from Canada (some of the nicest people, too), and some of the most arrogant people I've met are from Australia (some of the coolest people, too)... I don't have any more room for stereotypes. I've been faced with reality.

On topic, this is madness... Thought police is right. Notice, however, it was his parents who turned him in and his parents that made him go to the other school, not the police. How many people have missed that one? Of course, the police were a bit crazy for playing along. There's a generalization for you that I haven't been able to counter yet... Joining the "force" seems to make more jerks than any other profession. Except I have a sister who's a cop, and she's really cool... DARN IT!

bobtheduck

These people just don't get it do they?

Let me be as clear as possible, humans are animals. Animals as naturally violent. Animals kill things. They kill other animals. Here in the modern western world, we are "sheltered" from these primal urges. We hire a butcher or send some troops to do the dirty work. Man has been killing man for thousands upon thousands of years *BEFORE* books, *BEFORE* music, *BEFORE* tv, *BEFORE* porn, *BEFORE* video games, *BEFORE* any of us were even born. Are these people that dense?

I wish they could just stop and think for a moment. Its not like a nice kid listens to Marilyn Manson one time and becomes a psycho. It just happens that if you are already depressed and pissed off at the world you might end up listening to that type of music. Do these people not understand cause and effect?

Even worse than American stupidity is the way the media will use the tragedy to scape-goat whoever they want, in this case gamers. Instead of looking for the real bad-guys the police just arrest some kid making a computer game. This is like arresting Picasso because Guernica was "too violent." This is Neo-Nazi Amerikkka at its best. If video games were around in Hitler's day, he'd have burned them too.

Just a little refresher because people have short memories it seems:

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Amendment IV

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

cybereality

People see these games and think they're so violent and they must be influencing you and then something happens and they're "proved right". Same thing if I have a dream and then some of the aspects that I remember about it later come true. Does that mean that the dream was a premonition? Of course not. But there's that memory bias. You only remember those things that are important, so people remember the coincidences and not all the other times.

tech42er

It's insane. Just because this kid is a talented artist, he can't graduate. I guess if he wasn't into FPS's, he'd be allowed to graduate, but mapmaking is really just an art, just like 2-D mapmaking or architecture. There is a huge bias against video games, however, just as there have previously been huge biases against music, TV, comic books, novels, etc. It's really worrying to look at how this is being treated. This kid is harmed for life; he can't GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL. Do you know how important that is to a high schooler? And, even if he was a little unstable, will preventing him from graduating and forcing him into an alternative learning center really help to get rid of his violent tendencies? Of course not. Now he'd actually have a reason to be upset! I guess the administration didn't think that one through.

tech42er

That's horrible! This is just discrimination, fear, and irrationality at play. Anyone who's played a bit of Counterstrike would realize that the reasons for making a map of your school have nothing to do with violent intentions. But instead of thinking, knowing, or acknowledging that they have no fucking clue, they assumed the worst.

If they took two seconds to think about it, they'd realize that playing CS on a school map couldn't be training for a suicide run or whatever they though. If anything, it would train someone how to defend their school against armed terrorists. CS is nothing like slaughter.

Jawajoey

Here is something that everyone will need to realize sooner or later. You cannot protect yourself from everything in the world. You can take precautions but you will never truly be "safe". What is strange is that we are willing to overlook the things that are most likely to kill us, and yet we will go all out in protecting ourselves from things that will likely never affect us.

In the US, most fatalities are alcohol related, you are most likely to die in a traffic related accident, the average diet will likely cause diabetes or heart disease which can be fatal if left untreated.

What is everyone here most worried about???

Tepoz

@barktwiggs:

That is funny.

So I remember back in my high-school days, I had a friend who was a gun fanatic. And he and I both shared a sick sense of humour. I told him one day to bring one in because I didn't believe him. The next day I was called into the principal's office because "someone heard a rumour that (My First and Last name) was going to bring a gun into school, and I was going to get it from (His First and Last Name)." He was then called in as well.

If I ever find out who the fuck mentioned something I'll shoot them.

I give it two days before cops show up at my door for typing the above sentence. Seriously.

Or how about that time I was learning to drive a stick shift in a nearby cul-de-sac 10 seconds from my house, and a cop came up behind me and informed me he was called over because my car, (a 1990 toyota Corolla GTS), didn't look like it belonged among the BMWs and Mercedes parked at every driveway of these three garage houses. "These people have alot of money and belongings and they get scared when they see something out of the ordinary" is what he said, followed by "go home".

People are flawed. Me included.

Danj3ris

But seriously, I'm not surprised. We have psychos shooting up schools - so I can't fully blame their reaction. On the other hand, they blew the scenario way out of proportion. Yet, I don't know the full story, so I don't know if I can fairly ascertain the situation. What I can say though, is that we are living in a sad world.

Brill

@chs_alum: "..known for playing these type of killing games.."

I don't know if your post was meant to get people to talk more about the subject or not, but if the wording of your post is sincere then there is a disconnect between your culture and mine. You refer to CounterStrike as a "killing game". I refer to it as First Person Shooter. That in-and-of-itself is telling about how society at large views modern games.

The argument has been and will always be made that "this one thing" made these people commit the crimes they did. The reality of living in this world and that you come to realize that there are more complicated reasons behind why things happen. Yes, they played First Person Shooters but I have also. They murdered people and I have never used violence against people. I am not an exception so what makes those youth's an exception? Was it family, friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, stress, mental problems, gender/color/sexual orientation hatred, ect.?

The thing is people are only looking at electronic games. What about the sports they played, the books they read, the movies they watched, the music they listened to, or the people they hung out with? If both these youths were into the same things then most likely they played, read, watched, listened to the same things and hung around the same people. Couldn't one of those things have actually been the trigger then if you believe in a "trigger"?

Tepoz

This is crazy as many people have stated there have been many maps made of schools and workplaces(I would be among you if I wasn't a procastinator). Not because they wanted to fire up on the latest murder simulator but because they were just wanting to make something fun.

So you have a kid that has a PC and an editor and they decide to make a new map, well they need inspiration. And you know they spend a good chunk of their day and there year at school so they are familiar with it. It gives them a benchmark for success and a goal to achieve.

The bottom line is did anyone ever tell this kid you cant make maps of your school? This kid is being tramatised for this Utter BS. Now if this was a piece of the puzzle and they found the kid had other issues then it might be worth taking note in the big picture. But come on people a game doesnt teach you how to properly handle a fire arm. And If the kid knows enough to make a detailed map of the school I don't think they need it to plan an attack. But before they accuse this kid and ruin his life they should weigh the evidence and this to me seems like something that doesnt warent more than a slap on the hand.

Though its good they got to him before he got to that hammer he would have been unstopable for a several seconds I mean he may have even trained on the classic murder simulator Donkey Kong.

Konchu

Yeah I was about to say the same thing. Back in 96 the first Doom Map I ever made was a [poor] replica of my old high school, which was a big school. I attended a Trade School called Camden County Tech, and it was about as big as a medium sized College Campus (it's bigger now I hear).

many of you may not know that less than a year ago, two students of this same high school, known for playing these type of killing games murdered another student of the high school. They have seen were this type of joking has progressed too. It progressed to dead student and a mourning school and alumni.

chs_alum

@carlosrodas:
I don't see how playing extremely violent video games can help vent
one's issues, now sports.....that I can buy, in fact physical activity has been proven to succesfuly help in dealing with violence. My point is: how is extreme violence jusitified?

How is extreme violence justified? It isn't. It is not at all ok to act violently against someone else. What you actually mean to ask, I think, is "How is the right to play violent video games justified?" This is acually not very difficult to refute.
1. We can do anything we want until it's banned or outlawed.
2. Playing violent video games hasn't been banned.
3. That's it, QED.

Maybe instead you meant to ask, "What is the utility of violent video games in society?" OK, I'll try this one, too.

1. People need entertainment to keep themselves from being bored all the damn time.
2. Violent video games are entertaining to some people.
3. That was just as easy.

Instead, what you might be trying to say is, "Isn't the benefit of the entertainment value of violent video games for some totally mitigated and then some by the negative effects that they have on the people who play them, and therefore, the negative effects of the people who play them on society as a whole." We'll need a couple of facts in evidence before this can happen:

--You have the right to do anything you want until it is expressly taken from you by the government (with guns and jails). This is pretty much the thing that the country was founded on, which we may or may not have strayed dangerously from in the last several decades.

--There is no proven causation between playing violent video games and acting violently. Sure, there might be a correlation, I don't know, but you have to understand the difference between correlation and causation.

There may be some weirdo that enjoys playing Counterstrike, and also likes raping and killing. Just because that person exists does not demonstrate that enjoying Counterstrike caused that person to rape and kill any more than raping and killing caused that person to enjoy Counterstrike. The two results are both extrapolations of something else, his personality or upbringing perhaps. Or genetics, or random chance, or demonic possession, or something else entirely.

--

OK, given that some people are entertained by violent video games (a benefit), but there isn't really much conclusive evidence that there are negative effects (which I fully expect to be challenged on, with links please), where's the logic in saying that people are wrong for playing violent video games? There are lots of reasons that foolish people have for why this would be. Things like, "Well, it just makes sense", or "I'm uncomfortable with violence in video games, therefore it must be true".

And these people are fundamentally broken, if they're not able to understand that abridging my rights and freedoms for the purpose of placating their own irrationalities is going to be the downfall of everything that we believe in. Well, I at least. I think a lot of people believe in this, but who am I to force that belief on anyone.

The short answer to your question is: I should have the right to do something if I want to, until it's actually shown to be bad. Whitelisting normal acceptable activities is not freedom.

teeth7

Ok this is totally unrelated to gaming but I just wanted to share this with you. One day late after work and I was in the office by myself. The janitor came by, and when he saw me he asked me "Are you Chinese or Korean?" I told him I'm Chinese. The next day I was in the office with another Chinese girl and an Indian guy when the same janitor came by. I walked out with the Indian guy, and the janitor asked the other girl "Are your friends Korean?" (referring to me and the Indian guy) "Is anybody here Korean?" I mean com'on, even if we're Koreans, so what? Are you gonna stop cleaning our office from now on? You think I'm gonna pull out a gun and start shooting ppl? Shouldn't I be the one who's scared because I'm a petite female and have to deal with freaks like this?
Thanks again, I guess that if people can find justification for exposing functioning and non-functioning human beings to extreme levels of violence it is a sad little world we're living in.

I guess there's no stopping violence in our entertainment, we'll just have to deal wit it and keep ignoring the fact that eventually nothing good comes out of violence.

carlosrodas

Games have been this generation and the previous generation's book burning debate. In my high school days during the 80's, great literary works were banned in small-town libraries all over the US due to "violent" and/or "sexual" content, mine included. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Tepoz

This is ridiculous. A lot of mapmakers make maps based on locales they are familiar with, its just easier to do. Also, its just fun playing a game that takes place in your school, workplace, or even your house.

The fact they searched his house isn't that big of a deal, but the fact they are barring him, an exemplary student, from graduating and are making him to go a school for delinquents is just wrong.

While they school district may deny it, I think race was a big part of how they handled the situation. I'm getting tired of this "state of fear" that this nation is living in.

jinshifu

@carlosrodas:
Here's a perspective from the neuroscience perspective: http://retrospectacle.blogspot.com/2006/06/video-games-fri...

Most pertinent quote: "Catharsis theory (Kestenbaum et al, 1988) suggests that violent video games can provide a safe outlet for aggressive thoughts and feelings."

And further on: "Younger children (4-8 yrs) are most vunerable(sic) to violence in video games, but this effect dissapates by the time children mature to middle school age."

One of the researchers also suggests that violent television has a greater effect on increasing aggressive tendencies in children than violent video games do.

Bottom line: for functioning human beings who can distinguish between real and make-believe, videogame violence is probably not a huge issue.

I feel like we've been saying that for a while now...

MaxVest

Is this racial profiling? Because of recent tragic events is the police more prone to do such things to Asian people? Let's hope not, let's hope he gets the help he needs (if needed) and that we can avoid tragedies such as the ones we have had in the past. But let's also be careful about how we do things. We do not want racial profiling and/or gaming blames.

To tell you the truth, the latest murder weapon is supposedly the sword, there were several sword murders in this area last year...not that it replaces the good old firearm as the massacre weapon of choice, mind you.

And yes, people are unjustly targeting Asians now. I heard about a college student in New York who got arrested for exclaiming in the computer lab, "Gahh! If I don't get this paper done in time I'm going to kill somebody!" Sounds fairly minor, but ohnoes! He was Asiatic! The police arrested him and illegally searched his home looking for "weapons", of which he didn't own any.

Just goes to show you that, just like after 9/11, people will be more suspicious of someone who LOOKS like a murderer than they will of someone else, but never of their own race, of course. You didn't see a massive increase in Caucasians getting arrested after the Oklahoma city bombing, and after the Columbine incident it was merely ALL High School students put under the thumb, because Klebold and his fellow were Caucasian.

I'm not some advocate for people of other races, I'm an advocate of people NOT BEING STUPID. There's absolutely no reason to start targeting Asians as more likely to commit violent acts than other races just because of the recent VT massacre.

However, in this case? He DID have a map of his school on Counter Strike. As ridiculous as it is, everyone knows schools have a fit over stuff like that. He should've known better. However, I think some of his friends should get the hammer, too, not just him because he's Asian. It's idiotic.

Baramos

I'm not surprised that it got the reaction it got, some people think that their intentions are broadcast on wide spectrum and everyone knows when they are joking. Give a little thought into what you do. it's a different world then it was 20 years ago. Hell, I handed in a paper "The dissection of Debbie W." a classmate in 7th grade. Looking back at it now it was a bit disturbing and I would have been surprised that anyone took me seriously. Now I would almost expect it to get some sort of reaction other than the C I got because of the subject matter.

If the map wasn't of the high school it might have been dropped sooner or maybe it was a little race motivated too sadly to say.

inajeep

Fantastic. While they could attempt to root out potential perpetrators by just patrolling the halls and cafeterias a little more, they decided to base their conclusions off of counterstrike. Instead of checking to see who's the most estranged from the school community, they decide to simply grab anyone who's tied to fps gaming. I'm sure everyone in school feels so much safer and I'm sure this kid feels so much more emotional attachment to his school after this incident.

kliide

@carlosrodas:
Because people with high levels of testosterone tend to have quite a few innate inclinations to physicality and violence, and allowing them to emulate violence prevents them from committing real violence.

That's why physically rough sports, which make almost no sense if demand for violence is low, are popular and accepted. Some would argue that it's better to give violence a healthy and controlled outlet.

This leads one to question whether conceptualizing murderous violence has a different (read: worse) effect than physical playacting. It might also be that people who lack the social skills or physical abilities to engage in quasi-violent team sports, yet have a desire to do violence, choose video games as the best outlet for that impulse. Perhaps gaming is the outlet that imposes the fewest penalties for acting out anti-social behavior.

I don't necessarily buy all that, but those are the arguments that gamers aren't responding adequately to.

MaxVest

Many years ago when I was in high school I made a map of my high school so friends and I could play some CS in a familiar setting. Never did it cross my mind that it could be used to plan something disturbing. It was simply a way to enjoy the game in a setting we could have a connection to.

If anything, why not look on the bright side; the student(s) would think they could defend his school if terrorists attacks his school and planted a bomb. the kid should be given a award - he's a hero.

nunami

This angers me. I built Counter-Strike maps of my high school about six years ago and a Half-Life multiplayer map of my college campus two years ago. I also own knives and swords. This kid is just like any of us. Mapping is an art, and artists work from what they know - familiar locations are the first thing you practice with.

In a philosophy class in high school, I was the only student to defend a moral position where harming any living creature is abhorrent. I got into an argument with another student, who believed that it was his God-given right to shoot and kill anyone who stepped foot on his property.

Most of the class was on his side. This kid would shoot a human being, a total stranger, without a second thought, and no one blinked an eye. He was a "good Christian," and he'd never touched a video game in his life. But I'm a gamer and a secular humanist. Had our arguments been reversed, I'd probably be in jail now.

It's apparent that school administrators pay no attention to students who display an obvious disregard for human life. They only care about what's easy, what appears symptomatic of violent tendencies on a surface level, or what the news media tells them to suspect. People refuse to believe that a person can separate himself from the trappings of his recreation or art.

Once again, instead of listening to these kids, people just assign blame and expect the problem to disappear.

jettokisora

Frankly, before we get all "police state" happy, we should take a step back and look at all the crazy parents that have gotten us to this point. My mother-in-law is a teacher and due to numerous lawsuits, the entire district she works for is basically instructed to call the police for any disciplinary action that goes beyond detention.

So in the past when a teacher could take a kid aside and talk with them, they are now afraid of being sued for "harassing" a child so they have no choice but to call the police.

In response to story:
Yeah, they way overreacted. Just another case of old, probably Baby Boomer, non-gamers not understanding that this is just a video game and map makers would probably want to make all kinds of familiar places to play in not for any nefarious reasons, but just to mess around.

In response to Fahey's school story:
Ten years ago I wrote in the margins of a book (that I owned) that I hated my teacher. She was a nun. She saw it, put her hand forcefully on my shoulder, looked deep into my eyes with extreme intent, and whispered in a deep gravelly tone that she hated me too. Then she just walked away and never spoke directly to me ever again. Good times.

WanderLink

I think I get where everyone here's coming from; authorities overeacting, people being judgmental, bashing freedom of speech, it's just video games, etc, etc....

I'm all pro those things, and definetly the kid deserves a different treatment, maybe he did't mean no harm, or did he? I guess none of us have the complete first hand story.

But there's something that really bothers me, and I usually comment about it, why is it that whenever this issue pops up we blame everybody except ourselves? 'Cause believe you me, our glorification of extreme violence in entertainment isn't really helping, AT ALL.

We always try to make a point out of freedom of speech, or try to defend an industry that we enjoy so much (me included), but why is it that we never stop and think about all the crap that extreme violence represents, to me this kind of attitude is part of the problem, us not questioning the substance of violence in our games, I challenge anyone here to make a logical and intellinget argument pro violence in video games.

I'm not trying to convert anyone here or anything, just want to make you think.

carlosrodas

I think this is called discrimination, huh?

common, i am a Chinese, and i am not compromise with it.

just look, "Why dudes keep murdering people, and video games got blamed for that?"

This is because the US Government allow people carry guns on the street, or even to schools.

I've never heard Hong Kong has such crime. There have been quarrels between parents and kids due to mmorpg mostly, but no murderer have happened because of shooters (many dudes do play CS)

@PapaBear: I used to write for the Lit Mag at my high school and I like to write in different perspectives as well. I was actually pretty good at it; I was the president of Lit Mag ;) And I wrote a story about a boy dealing with the cruelty he found in the world. Next thing I know, my guidance counselor is getting me from class asking me if I needed to talk her about anything. It was ridiculous. I've written so many positive things, but authority figures are just too quick to jump on what they perceive to be too dark or hostile when it's completely innocent.

Maybe this kid was using this as an outlet. Do these people ever stop to think "Maybe this person was using this as an outlet and without it, maybe they WOULD hurt somebody" Everybody releases anger differently. They need to stop jumping to conclusions and being pricks about everything.

Pandamanda

@PapaBear: Wow. I'm so glad to hear that originality=dangerous instability to some teachers. Glad that the story got some recognition though.

In another nerdier note, my friends and I ran a d20 (lolz, loser) campaign where our campus had been taken over by zombies. Why? Because it was more interesting to set it somewhere we were familiar with and when you're creating a map for anything, it's really just easiest to base it off of something you know well.

Why is anyone surprised? Forgetting that there are smart individuals, PEOPLE as in the masses, are RETARDED. Look at Columbine. What happened? People went ape shit and blamed KMFDM and Marilyn Manson. Did anyone go after the people who physically and psychologically abused the shooters to the point where they had a psychotic break? No. Did anyone go after the school or the parents for not getting these kids counseling? No. Did anyone try to stop the physical and psychological abuse those kids got before they went on a killing spree? No. Why? Because in the US the news is another form of entertainment, and in our entertainment we need a villain, and we need one right away. And the media always has their usual suspects - music and video games.

People don't want an intelligent discussion about the roots of violence. Its the same with drugs and sex. The "just say no" and sweep it all under the rug and never deal with it head on mentality. Kids are a lot smarter than that. They live their lives as they see fit. They indulge their interests and see no reason not too. They haven't yet been disillusioned by a world full of people that would would rather serve their own interests than the greater good. They haven't had the joy of being unable to live the life they want because they're forced to work unpaid overtime all the time, but has no tolerance for lateness. So when the "too soon" blockheads see some kid making a map of their school for a game they immediately project their own biased viewpoint onto the kid rather than seeing this for what it is - a familiar gameplay environment based on terrain the kid knows by heart. Its not a value judgment on the school. What better map to play on than one you know like the back of your hand?

So now this kid can't go to his own graduation. Meanwhile these keystone cops will probably get a medal and continue to be a drain on taxpayer resources, rather than staffing the fry station at McDonald's where they belong.

PlaidNinja

I was about to make a comment about wanting to make a map for a first-person shooter of my school, but I think other people clinched the logic I was going to drive towards: that the overriding rationale isn't one of homicidal mania but merely one of extreme familiarity - you spend enough time being told what to do in the event of various emergencies (fire drill, accidents in the chemistry lab) and you're familiar enough with the area that you subconsciously start planning for the less "predictable" scenarios (gunfight, raptor attack, alien invasion) and those plans happen to translate well into the world of the first-person shooter.

Ketsuban

Please tell me you're not completely unaware of the irony of what you're saying. I hope you're not being serious about "hating everything Texas stands for."

FACT: A elementary school councilor once contacted my parents because my teacher had found violent ninja pictures in my desk! Oh noes! Ninjas! Being... violent?! She told my dad that I might grow up to be a serial killer. My dad, who has a background in psychology, proceeded to dismantle everything she did or didn't do to come to this conclusion.

Well, I teach college calculus now. I wonder if my students know what's coming towards them? I mean, drawing ninjas in elementary school = serial killer. I guess I've just taken my time in getting to that second part.

I made a DOOM map of my highschool back in the mid 90's when I was in school. I didn't do it to 'train myself'. I did it because it was MY High School...the centerpoint of my life at the time...and I thought it would be cool to bring that experience into my game. And shoot demons in the hallways. And hide shotguns in my locker. I just thought it would be a cool place to run around in...had a good layout for a level.

Making a "map" of a place you're already intimately familiar with and equating that, even on a superficial level, with intent to commit actual violence, is a tremendous leap of logic.

Mundane acts (making a map of a known space) that "can be" precursors to abnormal behavior are not necessarily so... especially when they are, in most cases, actually just precursors to other mundane acts (playing videogames).

You might as well ban people from getting in cars because someone played chicken once.

I have a better idea... how about we try to spot the actual "abnormal behavior" instead of picking apart details that crazy people SHARE with sane people.

That isn't to say the kid definitely did not intend to do harm... but I hardly think his ability to make a map should be the "tell" that society looks for.

dv8godd
