Cherrybomb, Folding@home has had a little study in HIV and Cancer too. So don't bash them because they are trying to make real life differences in the world that would take every human on the planet (working together with a calculus level of mathematics competency) thousands of years to maybe solve 1 protein fold (assuming none of those billions of people ever made a mistake... yeah right).
MJDeviant, look up "nanomachines" and "nanotechnology". Maybe you'll find a little more info on how that could benefit the folding/misfolding of proteins. But before we make a machine small enough to do that work, and actually can do that work, we kind of need to KNOW how all the proteins (or all the proteins in question) fold and/or misfold.
EVERYBODY- PS3 runs folding@home safely at 200 watts, much lower than the 360 probably runs anything, look at that massive power supply it has.
Topgeargorilla- PC's HAVE been running Folding@home since 2000. currently there is around 2 million computers running folding@home. ALL 2 million computers (which run folding@home constantly, unlike the ps3 version which you have to let it autoexec. or manually load it up) are contributing less than HALF of the total power of the system. and then you have the 100,000 ps3's. Those 100,000 ps3's sure are owning like things have never been owned before. Do the math yourself, if a ps3 does about 1 work unit a day, maybe 2, and if work units are 8 hours to complete for ps3, which they are, ps3 is running folding@home nowhere near as much as the 2 million PC's are. My pc that I am using right now has completed 9 work units, it hasn't closed folding in over 2 weeks. my ps3, which I turn folding@home on before bedtime and work (and I sometimes even forget to turn on folding...) has completed 12 work units, and in under an hour it will be at 13. PC's processors run at about 10Gigaflops seems to be for the high priced processors (which probably cost more than a ps3 itself). PS3 is currently rated by wikipedia as running at somewhere around 2.23 TERAFLOPs. 1 1Teraflops=1024Gigaflops. Do the math yourself, I believe you would be amazed at the ps3's potential, especially when you consider that not even folding@home is utilizing all of it's processing capabilities. I must say I share a little hatred for all three video game systems companies for different reasons, but I cannot ignore the fact that ps3 is simply making unheard of progress. Whether you love the PS3 or you hate the PS3, I don't care. But I will put boatloads of money that despite this slow, painful start Sony had to deal with. you want my own personal belief why I believe PS3 will win (again, for the 3rd time in a row) here it is.
FINAL FANTASY. Not 1 game console has ever been the less popular one, just so long as it had Squaresoft's (or now, Square-Enix's) support from the Final Fantasy SERIES.I will go generation to generation, listing the most popular game console, and what Final Fantasy's they had.

NES-Final Fantasy 1,2,and 3. NES was the first major success of a video game console.

SNES-Final Fantasy 4,5, and 6. SNES outdid Sega Genesis, remember?

PS1-Final Fantasy 7,8, and 9. Remember N64? Remember how everybody needed one around christmas when it came out? how the heck did sony, their first console with worse in-game graphics beat the n64 and Sega Saturn? It was going against 2 seasoned pros, and it turned out at the time to be the best selling video game console ever until...

PS2-Final Fantasy 10,11, and 12. PS2 is the current best selling game console. Ever.

PS3-we'll see, but Final Fantasy 13 is already coming out for it and it looks hands down like the best looking game I have ever seen. and you bet if they have a numbered FF on the ps3, it will have 3 numbered FF's for it. 3 Final Fantasy's per generation, and the system that recieves those 3 games has a habit of coming out as a major success. Consider that for all you haters out there who get pissed off that the ps3 is helping the world, and who actually believe the xbox360 could fold anywhere near as well as ps3. Also the HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray war is over according to one independant development studio. Blu-ray came later, much more expensive, with much better specs, and it is now on average outselling HD-DVD's by 3 to 1. Good job 360 with the optional HD DVD drive. Also movie industry's are moving to blu-ray to help speed up the process, and stop putting out on HD-DVD's. And if you believe that DVD's are not going to be dethroned anytime soon, it's time for a reality check. This is next generation. amazon.com's top 10 movies had Casino Royal as number 8 most popular... In Blu-ray, NOT HD-DVD. anyway, this post went a little further than I had planned, so I'll stop it here. I doubt most of you kept up with me to this point

XIndalecioX

cherrybomb: Protein Folding has a lot more to do with just Alzheimers, that is one of several diseases that they are researching. Also, with the extension of human longevity due to advances in medicine and science, Alzheimers is becoming much, much more of a serious issue, as people are increasingly living into their 80s, 90s, and even 100s.

Chebwa: Microsoft has already stated that they won't be doing folding@home with the 360. I think it had something to do with power consumption and inefficiency.

I don't think there has even been any mention of using the Wii for folding, and since it's hardware isn't anything spectacular, I don't know how much of a workload it would contribute anyway.

The PS3 is so good at folding because the Cell Processor was designed, at least in part, to be used for scientific calculations in supercomputers. The version used in the PS3 is a less advanced version, but is still extremely good at these scientific calculations.

I've heard that the electricity consumption isn't nearly as large as some people would have you believe, and it is, as far as I know, tax deductable.

Is there a Kotaku folding team, I wonder?

Suzaku

Having stanford work on Alzheimers and "other diseases" seems rather pathetic IMO as we eventually will have slight memory loss when we become old farts anyhow. Rather than wasting time on useless studies, how about they put forth the effort in utilizing the power for something significant like Cancer or AIDS studies rather. Idiots. And yes I agree, once the killer apps kick in, the folding will probably become "terrafloppy" (sorry, had to use it).

cherrybomb

That wasn't an actual hit to Kotaku, I'm guessing, that was making fun of PS3 fans who say Kotaku is anti-ps3... Really, people don't realize that Kotaku is made by a number of people who have various opinions, and maybe one or two of them honestly despises Sony and gets special pleasure from posting bad sony news, but that doesn't meant that represents the whole of Kotaku. So, in a way, I agree with him / (her?) but at the same time... This is the best place for game news, even if I have to put up with Sony hate now and again and again.

bobtheduck

i agree that he was definetly a little easily offended by your story.

but i have NUMEROUS times read sony-bashing articles, or articles that were written in a way that gave the xbox fanboys a reason to bash the ps3 (ps3 selling worse that n64 on amazon right now! type stories)

so.. i mean, maybe this story wasnt REALLY that anti-sony, but you CANNOT honestly look me in the eyes and say that kotaku doesnt sometimes put an anti-sony spin on things.

If anyone is interested in claiming Folding@home related electricity usage as a tax writeoff, read the below, which I fould here.

Ok here is the deal.

I did claim Folding@home on my 2003 return, and I did get my return
filed with no problems and made my payment to the IRS.

Here are the details of what I did and the results.

1. I claimed ALL the hardware I purchased that I still had reciepts for on
hardware purchased in 2003. However you can NOT claim the sales tax, as
that is a California tax (for me that is) but I did claim the sales tax on my
California state tax filing.

2. I used H&R TaxCut as my tax prep software. I entered the amount of $$
for hardware purchased AND I entered the amount of $$ for electricity used as a "Out of pocket expense". It is CLEAR that the months that the cluster was "Active" my power useage more than doubled. And these timeframes are proveable by my NetBoot servers activity logs which I printed off for my own records AND by Folding@Home's Stats page that
lists "Active Processors" which I also printed off for my records to
provide correlation IF I ever do get audited/questioned. I also kept each
power bill to provide an additional source of proof. All documents (i.e.
server logs, power bills, purchase reciepts & printed Folding@home Stats
pages) are being kept in a file cabinet. I will probably retain the records for 3 years.

The claim appears on my tax return as:

Stanford University/Vijay Pande Group - Folding@Home

That way it is CLEAR as to what I donated to.

Now for the totals.....

My total donation (hardware + electricity) was $1006.06
This resulted in a savings of $160.97.
My Taxes Due to the IRS WERE $189.97

Due to IRS $189.97
Donation Deduction $160.97
_________________________
Total Due to IRS $29.00

When you do your "e-file" through H&R Block online, they give you an
option to handle your return/payment electronically (and the hardcopy
forms also give the option via electronics deposit/withdrawl) I made my
$29 payment immediately and have recieved my California tax returns
in about 3 weeks.

Sounds like it is worth it to me.

I am now encouraged to donate even MORE to Folding@home.

If anyone has any questions as to what I did you can post in here
or email me at fatchick@adnc.com

And yes I am the same fatchick that started this thread. I just forgot the
password for my old account so I created a new one today so I could
pass this info along.

Just to note I fold on a computer I made with spare parts that I got cheap from newegg. I'm contributing to a "good cause" and not wearing down something that isn't so easily replaceble.

Btw the folding computer only cost $400 and is on 24/7, still running cool, and I'm not sweating the wear and tear these PS3's are unecessarily getting. I like the idea of folding, I really do, but I didn't buy a PLAYSTATION3 to be part of some distributed processing program to help fight AIDS and whatnot, FoldStation this is not.

Another thought, seeing as your donating electricity/bandwidth/personal investment of money to something such as this, would it constitute as a tax right off? Kind of like when people give to charity?

JTindahouse

Unique sez:
This project isn't about cures. It's about money free research going to pharmecuticle(sic) companies, so they get higher profits and their shares go up.

@Unique: The project is being conducted by a university's chemical department, under the oversight of a tenured professor. Results are not proprietary secrets held under lock and key by corporations, but are published publicly in medical journals.

Rolling your eyes at the profit motive shows both poor logic and an over-simplistic worldview on your part.

Remember, Sony is getting paid for having this feature on the system, because it is a hell of a lot cheaper then owning 250,000 ps3's plus the electricity to power them.

Incredible leap of logic. Show us a source that shows Sony is getting paid. Who is paying Sony - Stanford's chemical department?

Nice to see 2chan doing the fold, if only 4chan could do the same, hell we'd have cures for every disease by now. At least SOMETHING constructive would come from that.

In fact, that gives me an idea. Hosting companies that host sites like 4chan, IGN, Gawker etc, could set up folding programs on their computers to run in the background, or on servers that haven't gotten rented out yet, in return, that company pays the host for a certain amount of units processed. And organizations like Standford University could set aside a portion of their grants and government funds to give to the hosting companies. This would hopefully be passed down to the clients of the hosting companies (Gawker, IGN, etc) with lower server rental fees. Of course you could argue that if they're going to pay someone to do the processing for them, why not just do it themselves? Well, I would figure that in the end the researchers would make out on top by not giving too much money to the server hosts, and would also get the benefit of not having to set aside their own equipment to run the software, or pay the electic bills on top of that.

Or something like that.
protien folding is actually very important in developing new medicines. and its not like your helping out merck or something, its a university- still out to make a profit, but is for the most part, in the pursuit of education. and the people commenting that this is "helping rich people get their medicines" are, well, retarded. sure, all new treatments first go to the rich, and it would be nice if that changed, but eventually, more and more people get it. I'm sure stuff like tylenol was once very expensive. And if you own a ps3 (or 360, or Wii... or a computer that can play modern games), you are those rich people. if this was someone in africa who barely had enough money to pay for their food, nobody would ask them to use their electricity to help with protien folding.

=O

Yes the PS3 isn't capable of running the full suite but it does do very well in its task. As for the math wiz kid example, that why we have scientist and lawyers. Each doing what that person is good at and earning the big bucks doing it. :)

The PS3 folding@home sure made me run my pc to do this also. Before, I didn't pay too much attention to this distributed computing thing. I'm actually in 5th place in team Kotaku :) I'm still amazed at the fact the every time I come home, my PS3 hasn't locked up running this program for hours upon hours. I think my 360 would have eaten the dust if I ran it that much every day. It's just nice to be able to contribute to a good cause while patiently waiting for the new games to come out.
Protein folding is basically how proteins form the molecules in the human body out of the amino acids we carry.

Incorrect folding of a protein (ie: cells are not created properly and hence are damaging) can lead to some forms of cancer, Alzheimer's, and mad cow disease. @Unique,

your attitude is positively *Disgusting*. The work that is done to find cures for these diseases is *hard* and *expensive*. You need highly educated researchers, obscenely expensive custom equipment, sterile labs, production capability, etc. in order to find a cure for *any* single disease.

Do you think these researches live free? That they don't have to buy the equipment and materials they need? That they don't have families to feed? Cars to pay for? Mortgages to pay for? Student loans to pay back?

Yes, there will be profits made, and you know what? They're DESERVED. These are highly skilled and educated people devoting their lives to solving obscenely complex problems that would make you and I shit ourselves just to *see*. Moreover, you're flat out WRONG that "the poor will never see these cures". Pharmaceutical companies donate LOADS of product every single year to those who can't afford it, as do private charities, hospitals, and many times even doctors themselves. Then who pays obscene prices? Oh yes, the RICH do, and they do it happily and willingly, balancing on their backs the costs of drugs handed for free to the poor. Yeah, those horrible rich people, we should just execute *all* of them and seize their wealth!

Has there been any sort of rough calculation towards how many additional kilowatts one can expect to consume during 1 year of participation in this program?

This Folding@home thing is essentially indirect charity. Its popularity is an interesting phenomenon that should be noted and replicated elsewhere. It's tough to get people to open up their wallets, but you get past a massive hurdle if that direct link between "helping a cause" and "direct cash transaction" can be removed.

Think of all the parents of 15 year old kids who have no idea that a portion of their electrical bill is going towards funding Alzheimer's research.

markmarkmarkmark

I can't find anything as to how this is helping. I'm not knocking it at all, but I browsed through the stanford folding@home site and didn't really see what it means to know how a protein folds. I mean besides informational purposes of just knowing, what is it solving? Are there things that can fold or unfold certain proteins? Do they think they can make something to do that? I'm @ work so I couldn't really read every page of the site, but I couldn't find anything stating why they're doing this. I guess I don't know what this is solving for. Results-wise I mean. I know they have to understand what they are dealing with, I get that, I just don't know. Something seems missing, like physical lab tests or something. Sorry if I sound stupid, which I just may be, but I'm just confused.

MJDeviant

undoubtedly at Game Level.

It's worth noting that PS3 isn't--and isn't capable of--running the full suite of Folding workloads, and unlike PC's, which are measured against 3 different sets of Metrics, PS3 is measured only against one, at which it does extremely well. It's tantamount to taking a kid who's a math whiz but sucks at writing and languages, testing him solely on Math and then saying "Look, he's a genius!"

That said, this is really a good thing they're doing here, and I commend Sony for putting this kind of software on the PS3. Microsoft most certainly should do the same for 360, which due to sheer numbers *alone* would probably outpace PS3's output quickly.

It'd be great if Nintendo did this for Wii also, for though the output would certainly be less than 360 or PS3, that's not the point--every little bit extra helps, and there are rapidly approaching 7 million Wii's in homes across the world.

jasongw

What is interested is the hype behind this project. The poor will never see the medicines. This project isn't about cures. It's about money free research going to pharmecuticle(sic) companies, so they get higher profits and their shares go up.
If you disagree, please explain the process from this research to a cure to your wife's Alzheimer's.
Remember, Sony is getting paid for having this feature on the system, because it is a hell of a lot cheaper then owning 250,000 ps3's plus the electricity to power them.
It's nice that people are working on cures for things in this world. It sucks that the only reason these cures exist would be for profit.
With so few quality games, its no surprise that so many PS3 owners are using "spare" cycles for Folding@Home. Can't knock the motivation behind the cause, but I would expect as more exclusive titles are released more PS3's will be sold and a decreasing percentage of owners will be willing to pony up their PS3's time and energy (not to mention their electric bills).

djRuss

I don't think games will kill off Folding@Home on the PS3. It may likely just die off as people lose interest in getting work units done. However, leaving your PS3 on in Folding@Home while you're at work or sleeping isn't going to change because you have more games to play -- you can't play while you're at work or sleeping.

Maybe Sony will offer some sort of trophy/achievement for work done in Folding@Home. Then when Home comes out, people can show off how many work units they've completed in Folding@Home.

hexix

Id be supprised if the combined power of the wii is even 1 TF. Things like this make my eventual aging to dementia that much smoother a transition.

Ive still got 60 or so years in me before that hits.

cerberus_oz
