Massive damage is a term that is normally used. I heard it before the famous and horrific Sony press conference.

If they talked about Genji, crabs, or Sony then i would understand the reason to place this into the "not funny or not as funny anymore bin" In this case, i don't even think they were even trying to be funny.

The youtube 1 minute summary of the press conference still gives me a giggle or two though lol

I still find it funny as it was the whole 'riiiidge racer/hit the giant enemy crab's weak point for massive damage/real-time weapon change' was said not as a lame joke ala AYBABTU, but as part of a supposedly professional press/media presentation. Someone *actually* decided that those were the words they should say up on stage (and I'd like to stress the whole "you get to fight in actual battles that happened in ancient Japan, like fighting giant enemy crabs" nonsense).

It's comedy you can't buy (like the AllIWantForChristmasIsAPSP flog).

I find this all quite amusing. Light-hearted jabs now being in Pokemon, after all of the buzz they recieved being in Super Paper Mario; YEAH! break down the 4th wall!

Also, since I didn't see it mentioned, we can't forget the man just outside of Hearthome City, on route 208 (a few steps away from the sign when you leave the connecting building) that states after beating him:

"That battle will surely become a stupendous masterpiece painting! I shall title it... "My Pokemon Is Fight"!"

There is no way that can't be a throw-back to SomethingAwful, and the book "My Tank Is Fight". Nintendo did something right here.

Now if he said "We are going to hit your Pokeman's weak spot for massive damage" Then it may have been funny. Well, yea it would have been, but an over zealous E3 demostrator's phrases can only be funny for so long. Where as Ninjas and Pirates are timeless.

Weirdly, they wouldn't allow a 'massive damage' quote in Starfox Command despite that game having a Giant Enemy Crab boss, and being released (presumably) within BAshcrafts acceptable 'still funny' limits*.

I want to slap Nintendo's translators sometimes. I've counted at least two Something Awful references in that game, as well as the "massive damage" thing, and the scattered "noob"s and such.

I mean, I can barely stand internet memes when they're used on the internet - people who use them in other contexts are just...the worst sorts of people, really.

(although, slightly hypocritically, i laughed at "a winner is you". maybe because it's more of a reference to Nintendo's history that became a slight internet meme, rather than something pulled off some stupid forum)

"Massive damage" is a legitimate term, the only reason it's a joke with Genji is because people thought Genji was going to be realistic because it takes place in a historical setting... Back-to-topic, I do find the paradigm shift in localization a welcome change - I would cringe back then with the now-infamous "All your bases"-type lines, but to actually see localization taking into account proper language nuances as well as the vox populi of internet fora speaks volumes about how far the industry, and gaming culture, has evolved in the past decade.

Occasionally there are still funny jokes using "All Your Base" so I don't think the Riiiiiidge Racer, giant enemy crabs, massive damage and real time weapons change are ready for the dustbin yet. Although I think Sony will need to release some new memes for us to take the piss out of fairly soon.
