Based on their statement of no comment, I'm not positive of anything. I am however just making logical conclusions based on my observations.
They currently lose money on their 60gb PS3, and it's quite obvious that no one is in the business of losing money, so raising the price would just make sense. And they're obviosuly not going to keep both models the same price, that would just be silly. So from that I will assume that they will raise the price.

So all I can really say is that is not a US/Canada 98000 barcode on that box. It likely isn't a 98001 or 98004 barcode either. What does that make it, since it is A/1/1 region, which pretty much only covers North America?

Those cable symbols are exactly the same as the US 60GB ones, I looked. They wouldn't alter the component cable anyway, as HDMI is not available on that connector.

If Sony comes out with a new PS3 that only adds an 80GB drive and nothing else, and they try to charge more for it, they're idiots. I think frankly if they come out with a new 80GB PS3 and don't include an HDMI cable, they're making a mistake.

I fully expect the 80GB unit, if sold soon, will be marketed as a "special edition". Perhaps with a pack-in game, perhaps with a funky-colored case. This would explain why the 80GB markings are in orange instead of white.

But I have to say, still my money is on this being a fake, I'm just not at all sure.

I can understand why MS released the Elite, I think but what they should have done is upgrade the core with the HD AV cable, new HDMI, ethernet cable and the wireless controller. Then all they would need to do is sell the HDD seperately. There would only be 1 system, and the user would just select the memory card or HDD of their choice. Retailers would be happy because this would save space and confusion. The only downside for MS is retailers may make more money from the system than they do because the peripherals aren't packed in. So they don't have to pack in an HDMI cable, but they would save money on packaging and shipping (possible) and manufacturing since it will only be 1 hardware variant (with different color offerings).

Just my 2 cents.

1. The difference is too small to offer any real differention from the 60GB, thus having no raison d'etre.
2. Sony already realizes that the price of the PS3, although justified in their minds, is not being accepted by the public en masse. So, if anything, they will reduce the cost rather than increase it.
3. The manufacturing cost of hard drives is constantly in flux, so it is quite possible that an 80GB drive would be a better investment for them. With a relatively low increase in cost they can boost the specs of the PS3 to a competitive figure especially if the 360 Elite gains acceptance.

And for those who are bitching about how they bought the 60GB model and how this new model is somehow hurting them, well, it's clear that those are the younger posters of Kotaku who have never purchased high tech toys before. This is how it has been since high technology has been consumerized. So, bitch on.. bitches.

It could be fake, but the red part wouldn't be the only thing that would need to be added. The region code would have to be swapped out. And that's assuming that SONY used an entirely different model number for some other country that also includes the same languages as the NA boxes.

Needless to say, in order to be fake, it would take quite a bit of work and a lot of knowledge regarding SONY's worldwide packaging practices. If someone had that kind of knowledge, why would they change the drive size info from white to red?

This can't be so easily dismissed.

Assuming the one on top is the same as the one on bottom, there's something up here. The A/1/1 region code on the left would mean it is a US/Canada model.

However, the UPC (bar code) for the US units are 711719 800002 for the 60GB (98000) and 711719800101 for the 20GB (98001). The 80GB 98004 should be 71171980040? where the ? is a check digit I don't know how to calculate.

0's are pretty obvious in barcodes, and I can tell you the barcode on the box on top only has at most 2 of them in the last 6 places. So it can't be 7117980040?.

Which means something, but I don't know what. Perhaps it means this isn't really a US/Canada model and thus has a different UPC?

I can't imagine the person faking this would alter the barcode.

I don't believe the Canadian units say "Go" for Gigaoctet. The regular US/Canadian version already has the accessory contents in 3 languages (as in this pic) but only puts the capacity in GB.

So I'm pretty confused by all this. Just the orange of the size (US/Canada drive sizes on PS3 boxes is in white) would make me think it is fake. Or a special edition.

Every time the low end mass market drive size increases SONY can stick them in the PS3 for the same cost. If you recall the Xbox at one point had to start paying more for the older, smaller HDDs to stay in spec -- due to the fact that the mass market no longer made such drives. I hope all console makers follow their lead here in the future. It would be nice if you could keep all your downloaded content backed up for every system. Brave new world of online distribution. ;_;

Like I said it really, really doesn't matter to anyone who already owns a PS3. None of us are stuck with any sort of inferior model. We're stuck with a choice of whether or not we want to upgrade our PS3s with a higher capacity drive, but that choice was always there. This isn't the case of the 360 with its choice of either 20GB or 120GB and $99.99 or $179.99. So to make more storage space in a newer PS3 an 80 GB model, they just made a 2 HD model, a 60 GB with a 20 GB. This way Sony CEC/A can screw us over even more. I feel sorry for every PS3 owner no matter what system you purchased the 20 GB or the 60 GB models, and even this "New" 80 GB model. Oooh one more thing how has Blue-Ray DVD out sold HD DVD??? This is more of a waste of money than the N-Gage and the Virtual Boy combined. I am sorry but the PS3 needs a price drop of 50% no less. I know I live in a very rural part of America, but if this is the case around me, chances are this is the case around the US, Canada, the UK, and Europe. Sorry Sony but after the PS2 screw up I will still not buy the PS3, even if you make an incredible price drop of $300 on the system. I mean come o the PS2 was the worst screw up of all time, first you get firewire and 2 USB ports, then they took away the firewire port and left you with one USB port and made an internal DVD remote sensor so you didn't need to take up a controller port for the sensor. They called it the PS2 Plus, and unlike GM the plus didn't mean better!

Meanwhile they made the add on for the ethernet and HD expansion. After the PS2 plus came the PS2 two, smaller no fan and no room for the HD that you got with Final Fantasy. Ummmm and now they want to make the HD bigger in the PS3 why? so you can make more money on a waste of time and money system? Sorry Sony not this time, not this time.

I don't think there is really even a "Canadian" model, as the ones we get here have English, French, and Spanish on them. I highly doubt the 60GB version would drop to $499 just yet. It's far too early for a $100 price drop ($50 sounds far more reasonable and far less desperate) and $100 difference for 20GB of HDD space is definitely pushing it. Sure, Microsoft got away with it for some reason, but there's no way Sony could considering they don't force you to use proprietary overpriced hard drives.

What could have happened is that the original drive had 3 platters, 20GB each, and Sony was able to get a 2 platter model, but only in 80GB. it would be cheaper, so they figured why not.

The only reason they haven't announced it is because stores probably don't want to be stuck with excess stock of 60GB versions.

Also, being from Canada, I can tell you PS3's aren't nearly as prevalent here as they appear to be everywhere else. So Canada may get them first because they don't have stock hanging around.

Honestly I bought the 60 gig about 3 months ago. If this is gonna release I would say it's probably still a couple months off.

I would think this would take the 599 price over and the old version would drop to 449-549 maybe (more than likely 499).

Sure I already have one but I wouldn't feel jipped by this as it's only 20 GB difference, and that 20 GB isn't gonna make or break it to me. With HDDs being relatively cheap for the PS3 when I find I start having space issues I'd rather drop a 100-200 gig in.

The larger harddrive was hardly even my reason for my purchase of high end model (for the affore mentioned reason) but rather for the built in Wi-Fi. The card readers (which are actually pretty useful, and larger drive) were just kinda cake.
