The Elite has a different enhanced scaler chip for HDMI so this isn't something that can be retro fitted to an exisiting 360.

I'm not too bothered about any of this as I may pick one up when the new 65nm chips start appearing.

I'll get a PS3 too once the price in europe drops to 300 for the 60gb version. I expect to see that happen at around october or late summer as we now all know the sales figures are sell through to shops and not end users.

sadly, i dont think this is physically possible since their existing A/V interface has only analog video support with the output scaling chip they use. there's a really good ars technica article on the subject if you are interested.

That HDD is absurdly expensive and this new Elite version is, I want to say entirely superfluous but the addition of the HDMI is a necessary addition--though minor. I feel Microsoft should've just addressed these issues with reasonably priced peripherals as opposed to doing this.

I already own a premium, so this Elite Xbox can die and go to hell. I'd love to have HDMI on my 360, but VGA is working just fine, and I think the black look is ugly and outdated.

I do think it's bullshit that the HDD is $180, because anyone who buys it will be the early adopters, so it's like their getting doubly ****ed.

Microsoft cares so little for their customers that they're almost Sony.

Except that none of those console iterations added to the functionality of the console. In fact, if memory serves in past generations, new console iterations actually removed functionality.

eg. PS1 rear port removed in rev2. PS2 slimline not supporting HDD.
Only thing i can think of that slightly works like this is the 32x from Sega, the disk/cd (i forget which) famicom addon and possibly the extra memory in the N64. However they didn't cost the price of a new console nor did they vastly improve the features of the original since they weren't supported very well.

Again, this is an invalid argument as each phone provides the same three basic services and at the same time each phone provides unique experiences. They are not tied into a single platform like a games system. If my phone can't play java games i don't care because i bought a phone. However, if my phone doesn't allow me to send more than one text at a time (linked i mean) and others do then i'd be mightily miffed.

Umm, it is a special order 2.5" SATA HDD for MS made by Seagate that must pass specific standards of operation; not some loss leader 3.5 EIDE drive from Fry's that may or may not fail within a year of purchase.

Not to mention the prepping of the HDD to add the security features by MS to appease the media industry for the video downloads, and the custom enclosure to connect it to the 360; which keeps my entertainment center nice and tidy.

Now $99 for 20 gigs is outrageous, $180 for 120 gigs is a premium, but not unreasonable.

Don't get me wrong I think I should be able to use USB Flash drives and External HDDs for saves and backups, but understand the use of their proprietary HDD for DL content. It is media industry that needs to stop punishing it's legitimate customers.

Wow, I have a 360 now and I feel totally ripped. I mean, it's like they're saying "this is better than what we came out with a year ago, wanna buy it?" Whatever happened to getting right the first time?
If you buy this, as a current 360 owner you end up paying a crap load of money just because MS knew they could come out with a black one in a year.
I thought that the consumer always wins when companies compeate. Guess not.
They don't even offer price drops or built-in HD-DVD, I think they even mentioned getting a bluray player when bluray wins the war. How hard would it have been for them to at least put in wireless?

I'm just kinda upset that this new iteration comes out over 16 months after the original 360 came out. I didn't buy mie until the system was maybe 8 months old, and i still got ripped, because UNLIKE buying a car, not too many people were aware a new iteration of the console would be coming out the next year. So what bugs me the most is that i wont get any kind of upgrade offer. i may actually be forced to make a purchase from gamestop for the first time in my life, if the rumours of an upgrade offer, for like 150 bucks or whhatever, is true. Because not only do i think the black 360 is shweet looking, and i also want the 120 gb drive. The HDMI isnt too big a deal, as i have never had a HDTV in my life, though that may change next year *fingers crossed*

@Veltis: It's true, your arguement only makes sense if those features are what I'm really looking for in the first place.

If I really just wanted to watch Blu-Ray movies and play a video game here and there, ya, the value you get with the PS3 is a good deal for those uses, there's no point in argueing that.

If my primary goal isn't to watch movies but play games, it appears to me that the value is with the 360 where you have the alternate situation. I can play games on a premium system that has more than enough space for game saves and try out an HD movie here in there for download.

As far as wireless goes, at this point as I Cat 5 or 6 to be far more reliable so if I really want stable online gameing or downloads, why pay for what I don't want or need?

Comparing the different versions offered for the 360 and ps3 doesnt not compare to the different versions offerd for the genesis snes etc. the 360 and ps3 versions have very different features added between the different models, where as the genesis, snes, nes, and many gameboy models were just different sizes/cases not really any features were added. (i have all the versions so i know) in the case of the ps2 the new version added popular add ons that many people had purchased (i.e. LAN) As for the Panasonic Q that was something most people didn't even know about and was way out of the league of the regular gamecube. (the Q was pretty awesome with its mirror front ;)

Basically this generation is the first to offer choices at LAUNCH, unlike previous game systems that had relaunches of basically the same system with minor changes in LOOKS.

- transfer your 20GB content over
- then sell your Premium

360 will release a Blu-ray add on WHEN Blu-ray wins the format war.

You can transfer and then send regular 360 model to MS.

I recommend that eveyrone listen to Major Nelson's 30 minute podcast about the elite.

They discuss EVERY major issue and put out some very convncing arguments for their various decisions. It's also worth it to hear Nelson groan at the HDD price.
