Actually "cool" pop songs in France are frequently sung in English. Back in the early 90s when I lived there it was the only language to sing in. Singing in French wasn't played on the radio. Unless it was done by non-french artists. Go figure. It's the younger crowd that they're targeting with the ad.

I'm French and i assure you a lot of french ppl have a minimum skill in english language to understand "I love you" :)

With or without this Xbox boat no one wanted to buy the consoles (like 50-60 consoles sold in paris atm)

US and japan : PS3 60go 400€
Europe : 600€ + 5 months

A lot don't accept that :p

I'm happy to be french today (Never thought I'd see the day I'd say that, or type it too)

Just to add my personal experience as a french person (I'm not proud about that) we have a lot of ads in France which are in english and people don't usually mind except a bunch of extremists who still think that french is a universal language.
Every french know what 'I love you' means, so by extension they know what 'XBox360 loves you' means too.
Just adding my contribution: PS3 launch is France is a fiasco but that's what you get when you mess with us Fren... I mean Europeans (because in France we tend to surrender ^^).

Well, to make it short, you see about 50-60 people next to the "shop-boat" because they came to see the free movie projected in blu-ray standard.

There was another line in which you could enter if you show your cash money and really was able to buy the PS3, so you could enter the boat, see VIPs, eat things, and test the PS3.

There were as many security guards as potential buyers finally. Sony was waiting for about 3000 people, only 50 showed up....
Even worse, at the Champs-Elysées shop were the PS2 and PsP were launched successfully, only 5 peopled showed-up for the "midnight event"

Has anyone had any problems with their 360 since launch? Sure, there were a lot of problems back then, and there are still people having problems with launch units, but they're repairing them all for free, and usually send out free stuff with them, what more do you want them to do?

And Microsoft hasn't actually "bought" any Sony exclusives, it's all been down to the developers/publishers jumping ship. Would you really want your title to be exclusive to an expensive machine that, so far, has been doing rather poorly?

Stick it on the 360 as well, and you're almost guaranteed to make twice as much. If Microsoft were buying them, they'd be exclusive to the 360, not multiplatform.

Many advertisements worldwide do use short phrases in English. And even though France is slightly more resistant, they're far from an exception (though by law, there has to be an English translation on the page/screen somewhere). Some (usually older) Frenchmen may take offence to these English phrases but very few of them would not know any English whatsoever. And when it's Microsoft appealing to the gaming youth of France, writing 'YOU' isn't going to cause any confusion or make boil any blood.

And let's face it, Microsoft could have written it in Hindi considering all the people who turned up (by my translation, the Jeux-France site says the boat event "only atrracted around 20 people" and the Ave Champs-Élysées "4-5 people max"). Call me what you will, but I do take some joy in seeing their overextravagant launch events in Sydney, London and Paris failing to attract more than 100 people each.

I've been to Paris, and there is a fair bit of English. A popular T-shirt when I was there said "Peace and Love 100%!" Older French people are much more sensitive about the language; most younger people probably don't care all that much. I mean, just the fact that the name of the consoles are "Playstation" and "XBox" rather than some translated version means that it's not a big deal.

If this ad was meant for French it would be in their language. It would be that way even if it weren't a country which has a chip on their shoulder about their language no longer being the "lingua franca".

What everyone should look at is the amount of people at this launch. Less than 20. Because the Babelfish translation which is provided on the website the article ran on indicates it was less than a score of people there which is 20. Plus watch the video from the even under the article and you will see all the crowd paths they set up were wasted cause no one came.

Yes, taking pictures of the tower at night is a violation of copyrights. Why? Because it was lit by some lighting-architect dude and he "copyrighted" his "lighting". So by taking a picture of the Eiffel tower lit, he is "stealing" the scene, in some sort of nutcase way.

It's true. It's because of a law that prevents people from taking pictures of almost anything, and it all started when some woman won a case in court after she was photographed without her permission (like you know, when people film the streets in New York or any other city).

And it's not just in France, this kind of law is present in a LOT of countries, we are just not aware of it.

So you can't take a picture of a house in France, because the architect OWNZ it.

I don't know, Microsoft does this sort of stuff all the time. I remember reading on here back in December that MS had bought out the entire background of the PS3 IGN page for a Xbox 360 ad.

Similarly, when Wired Magazine ran a comparison review of the PS3 and Wii, Microsoft was there with a full page 360 ad on the opposite page. Of course, something like that is more Wired's fault for poor journalistic decision making, but..

It all just seems tacky.
