Of course, in pretty much every PC RPG from the last 10 years where you can play a female or male character, they have the exact same abilities, skills, everything. But hey, let's make more mountains out of molehills.

Karlott

How strange, when Dungeon Siege was first being marketed I was TOTALLY drawn to the the red-headed chick as well, and was a large factor in me having interest in the game. Strange how that appeals to female gamers.

Magwidgeon

shes right of course. i demand that i be made to feel normal for doing things i do, because if i did not feel normal, i would spiral into a black pit of depression at how much of a freak i was, give up, and return to the comfort of doing things everyone else appears to do while i repair my fractured sense of self.

I personally dislike that cover. You can cover half of her face vertically and she looks like a different person on each half (left side sassy, right side determined). I have never played the game so perhaps there's some reason for that, but it's strange.

Seriously though, if you want non-objectified women, don't change the male-centric game developers. Make a development office yourself staffed by women and let's see what rolls out.

Pal

I have to come clean that I don't necessarily end up caring much about objectification, but game sexism is getting to be absurd for other reasons. An example is in one of the first screenshots released for Clive Barker's Jericho that shows one of the female commando characters fighting in a tight leather outfit that exposes her hips and breasts. The backstory is that this is supposedly an 'elite unit' etc etc., which means of course that dolled up female characters are totally out of place and idiotic*.

I mean, I get the fact that developers and publishers feel they have to give male gamers their jollies in order to sell games, but I looked at that and couldn't help but extrapolate** those kind of decisions into the rest of the game... is it ALL going to be geared toward pushing the cardboard cutout target demographic stereotypical gamer's most low-level buttons?

* Maybe it will be the game's clear intention to present an unusual take on the usual 'elite commando unit' trope, but I'm doubting it.
** I tend to do this kind of stuff; maybe I should stop.

Gwog

I tend to overlook sexism in games. I realize the market is still male oriented, and honestly, if I want to play a game, I'll play the game - could care less if there was a scantily clad girl on the cover.

Yeah, making the market more friendly to the female persuasion would drag in more female players, but eh, that might take a while to happen.

Kotae

Hmmm, I hardly pay any attention to cover art these days, but I do like Final Fantasy's plain white covers (I'm in the UK so I get the PAL ones, which look the same as the Japanese ones.) and the box art for Ico (again the PAL one, the US one was horrible) was great.

The issue of sexism in games is rather a different matter though. The game industry really needs to grow up about it if it is to be taken seriously by non gamers.

hinges
