I'm sorry... this is cute and all but it's not nearly enough to make me forget all the crap that Sony has dragged gamers though. I know the genre this falls into but I couldn't help thinking, "What else is there to do?" during the whole video.

I can't also help but feel that comments like "Congrats Sony, this is exactly what gamers want on next-gen" or "ZOMG I WANT A PS3 NOW!!" are from people who are hired by Sony or are people that are just oblivious to the one-finger salute Sony has been gamers for a while.

GravitySpec

meh. just another (admittedly very, very, pretty) version of line rider, if you ask me. i give it about 3 seconds after release before someone posts a "ZOMG F'in SWEET LBP vid!!!!" on youtube. complete with soundtrack furnished by Nickelback. which will then be linked to by kotaku. and then hated on by commenters.

I'll be honest, this game looks fun and is pretty much gorgeous, but is this the game that everyone has been waiting for? The Wii seems to have the monopoly on cute and fun games for 3rd gen, and considering that the Wii is half the price, I don't see why this is really pushing people to ponying up the dough.

If Heavenly Sword destroys souls (as it very well might) I'll start to see the PS3 as worth it. So while this game seems like "pantloads of fun" it is just the initial look. Sony's gotta prove a bit more to me with Blu-ray, and then we need some original content that's outside the OMG ADORABLE genre.

Of course Home is also to be considered, but with the corporate policy of Microsoft being complete interaction of media, it's likely we'll see something of a similar sort by them depending on the success of Home.

Do you guys remember when the first Xbox came out and a lot of people were buying it for Halo? People thought the game was worth 350 dollars. Those people got lucky that games like KotOR, and eventually Halo 2, came out to rationalize the purchase a lot more. That seemed more like a gamble that could have gone horribly, horribly wrong though. I don't know if I have enough faith in Sony as a company to make that gamble. My experiences with SOE have taught me that.

deviantCharles

This game looks interesting but..why are people making it out to be THE reason to own a PS3? Is it really worh all the hype you people seem to be giving it?

In my book no, this and that 3dworld thing arent enough to warrant a $600 investment. Its going to take quite a few cool things that are exclusive.

d0x

Penny Arcade made a pretty good point about this. With Home and LBP, Sony has gone from "We're Sony, of course our product will sell," to "We understand that you want something worthwhile to play on your gaming machine, so here it is." It took someone else's take on it to crystallize what had been lightening my heart about this whole thing, and there it is. Sony is finally saying to consumers: "Okay, we are going to start talking about what you want, not what we think you ought to want." Even if I'm not exactly on the same wavelength as the music they're currently playing, the mere fact that they're actually offering something other than blithe arrogance and casual dismissal of consumers' concerns is hugely promising.

Digital_Sky

@Doomstalk: I can't really say I care a lot about either of them. I'll grant "neat" on LBP's graphical presentation, okay. I think most people are going on about LBP because it looks "fun" though (Wii's big selling point so far is "it's fun!"). All I could think when looking at the vids of LBP is how I'd probably enjoy it for 20-30 minutes and be bored out of my mind afterwards.

@interstate78: My original comparison was actually to GRAW, not PDZ. I don't own PDZ, but from everything I've heard and the few times I've played the demo, it's pretty weak. Sluggy frame rate, blah graphics, standard weak FPS gameplay. JMO.

Since I'm taking shots at popular games, personally I think Gears of War isn't that great either. It's got nice detail, but sometimes that detail visibly "pops" in, and the game itself is MASSIVELY overrated (yes, I own it and I'm saying this). Personally I'd call HALO 2 a better game than GoW in most ways... and I don't like most FPSs either. The one thing I really do like about GoW is its well-done hybridization of 1P and 3P viewpoints. If there's anything about the game I'd like to see become much more common in development schema, it's that.

Digital_Sky

I always keep reservations about how fun or 'complety f'in awesome' a game will be until I've played it. First thoughts, looks like a fun game for a group of people. Would I buy it based of that video, yes.

For those of you complaining that the game has no enemies, there have been plenty of games that didn't have them and they turned out to be classics. Marble Madness (no I'm not counting that weird solid slinky thing that ate your marble, or the acid :) ), Boy and his blob, and just recently Katamari.

If its just that its a 'platformer' with no enemies, think of another name for the genre, I like Flaberplast personaly, say it.. its gotta ring to it.

Khabi

@interstate78:

"
I said ORIGINALLY developped for PS2-- of course it looks better but its origins shows. If you really do have Resistance, just point your gun and zoom at any object, especially the ground. It looks like garbage.

And if you put PDZ and R:FoM side by side you will see that PDZ looks much, much, MUCH better than Resistance. All Resistance has is polygons. The textures are pixely and blurry. Just compare them and you'll see. PDZ owns Resistance hands down."

Don't be ridiculous. Resistance looks way better than PDZ in every way, shape, and form. Yes, I have both games. R:FoM doesn't have the most amazing textures -- it makes up for this in other areas, like particles and area size, easily -- but they're easily as good as PDZ's.

RedRedSuit

I said ORIGINALLY developped for PS2-- of course it looks better but its origins shows. If you really do have Resistance, just point your gun and zoom at any object, especially the ground. It looks like garbage.

And if you put PDZ and R:FoM side by side you will see that PDZ looks much, much, MUCH better than Resistance. All Resistance has is polygons. The textures are pixely and blurry. Just compare them and you'll see. PDZ owns Resistance hands down.

interstate78

Resistance looks damn good, and certainly nothing like a PS2 game. It looks way WAY better than PDZ (which is to be expected, and not some kind of ammo in the system wars). Few games can maintain a solid frame rate with as much going as this game does.

RedRedSuit

@Digital_Sky: I beg to differ. Resistance looks dated and like it was originally developed for PS2. Just look at the textures up close. It pales in comparison to even Perfect Dark Zero (though it may be *funner). Its only remarkable feature is the 40 or so online multiplayer.

interstate78

Holy... crap. I know others have said this, so maybe I should be a bit more erudite and sophisticated:

Holyus crapus.

Seeing this and the PS3 Home have actually forced me to consider buying a PS3, and I haven't bought any next-gen consoles and games yet. I was planning on the 360, probably not the Wii, and I've always been a PC gamer but then...

This.

This is what next-gen is all about. This is the Spore-innovation that I haven't seen on big-budget console titles in forever.

Heck, this is what Spore SHOULD turn out to be- innovative, collective gameplay that makes the player of the game the owner of the game.

And most importantly, lest we forget, fun. A trailer that makes me smile and giggle and remember why I play games?

That alone is worth the price of admission.

P.S. Enemies? Psht, who needs enemies? As the trailer demonstrates, your friends and their failure to master physics will be all the antagonism you need. :)

Antropical

@rdun: GRAW was out a little under 4 months from launch, and was hailed as the first truly next-gen 360 title. PS3 trumps it with R:FoM available on day 1, though. ;-)

I'd say the biggest reason for the appalling lack of quality 360 software at launch was a total lack of developer ambition, combined with heavy pressure from MS to crank anything possible out within the launch window. They paid for that hubris, and they should have.

BTW no offense to anyone here, but LBP looks totally "bleh" to me (not the music and graphics, which are awesome, just the play). The only game of this type I'm even remotely interested in is Braid... and I don't care much about that, even.

Digital_Sky

This just looks amazing, and it is definitely a +1 for the PS3 (they have a lot of catching up to do, though). Honestly, something like this would never get old, since users will constantly be creating new levels. I can imagine a website that serves nothing but new levels and puzzles for people to figure out and play. Whenever you and three friends are together, just download a hundred levels and try to go through them together.

Honestly, this is next gen. It's not about graphics or controls. It's about creating new things and enjoying them with friends.

Xagest

Unless it comes with a large number of already made levels, each with a specific goal in mind, it will just be another boring open ended game. Comeon people I mean its fun to make your own stuff for a little bit but for me its all about completing the singleplayer mode.

It would work if they set it up like warioware even where they had like 15 "levels" that are each unique and fun and you can replay whenever you want. Also maybe down the line they could release some sort of collection of the best user created levels as part of the initial download for the late adopters.

Sirusjr

This game looks pretty nuts. It makes me kind of glad I own a PS3 as a gamer machine (I'm already sold on Blu-ray but have yet to play a game on the thing) but I don't see it as something that justifies the price of the system for most people.

More than anything what it made me think was how awesome a 2D Castlevania or Mario would look with that level of graphics.

Enough with the 3D shit and relegating 2D to portable systems.

skullivan

Looks cool. Graphically impressive for sure.
"gameplay" doesn't really seem very solid yet though.

Rag Doll Kung Fu was the same way. I was really amazed by it visually, and then hated playing it. My friends and I spent more time comning up with characters.
This looks similar. Lots of time creating the content, very little gameplay.
I dunno, man, I dunno... I mean, it does look cool, but will it have much mass appeal without any objectives, enemies, or goals? I mean, Line Rider is definitely a cool creativity tool, but no one pays for it. Without something a little, uh, gamier, this could be the next Electroplankton---fun for a few (myself included), but not really a system-saver.

This is an especially ominous question for Sony, as this game could easily be overshadowed by Spore, which has lots of user-created content *and* actual gameplay---get the release date wrong and it could suddenly become an also-ran.

Still, this and PS Home are the first signs of an actual vision for the console beyond "more". I'm pessimisstic about Sony sticking to this vision---many a corporation has said they want to empower users, and then fled at the first sign of trouble---but it's a nice change to hear good news about Sony.

Well, at least you know I'm not paid to comment about 'em! Unlike, I suspect, some of the people here.

That Fuzzy Bastard

I'm very pumped for this and this will definitely be something I pick up for my PS3 whenever I happen to get one. It reminds me of the 4 player multiplayer game in Alien Hominid where you go through little puzzles levels with four people at a time, only those didn't involve any kind of teamwork. This is some cases involves teamwork, or is helpful to have friends with you, and the whole physics and being able to make your own levels looks very appealing.

They need to make custom levels downloadable for free over the internet, with user-made levels, and make them downloadable FAST, so they can incorporate a mode where you can hop online with friends, put the stage selection to random, and try out an infinite amount of new stages for as long as you want.

Mit

Clip looks pretty good. If they can actually get some interesting 4-player puzzles to solve, rather than just making this a single-player game that happens to let 3 other people join you, Sony will be on to something. If it is just the single-player game, it still looks like it could be a blast, but may be a missed opportunity.

totally agreed.. plus i've been waiting for an excellent co-op platformer for EVER.

i love all the little toys there are in this example.. like the rocks you knock over and job across, the rocketpacks, and the shell they had to lift... those floating stars..

i especially liked that one part that the one guy was having trouble with... the star that gets pushed by the moving block, which launches the star upwards..

I feel bad about constantly hating on the PS3, but seriously this game will be good if your playing with friends, if you get a dumbass in the game with you, have fun...

Not only that but sandbox games are limited. Sure you can have endless amounts of thigns to do, but only with the same things.

And not only that, but seriously Sony, wheres your big games? playing a bunch of small downloads is great and all but at some point, somewhere on the horizon, is there anything actualyl worth paying $60 for?

The_Truth

Hey, it looks like Toy Story!

Looks like the sort of thing that will have you pawing at your screen and wondering how the graphics look so convincing. Love to get this in hi-def - it really seems to transcend my expectation of game graphics up to now. Mind ou it seems locked to a 2D view - maybe that's a good thing...

Writing as a 360 owner, the next XBLA title is going to be hard to take seriously when this looks so fine and allows you to define your own game.

I would like to see more of the setup and how you design stuff, but so far this seems astounding.

I still can't afford a PS3 though.

drivenstorm

Wow. Just Wow.

I'm not a Sony guy, but this little LocoRocoish little game is a bless for this gaming world.

I seems to be so smooth, so simple, so easy, so enjoyable and... DAMN,IS A PLATFORMER.

An all the 2D/3D aspects that blend together so well. Is simply brilliant.

As I see it this is going to be better than Nintendo's weird experiment called Super Paper Mario, which it seems will combine Platforming+RPG+3D.

Sounds like a killer-app for me? Sure. Just release it with good timing, and maybe, just maybe, all this so called hardcore and bloodthirsty guys that think they are better just because they play games with guns would try and like this pretty good looking an seems to be fun game.

cYcO_pLuXxEl

The interaction between the 4 players is especially interesting, and, dare I say it, compelling? This is the first time I think I've been excited and jealous for a PS3 game, and it's a palpable excitement that similar to, but not on par with, the excitement when I see Mass Effect and think about how close it is to release. This may not be the critical killer app that Sony needs after so much bad PR, but it sent me from well into negative interest territory to positive in about 2 minutes of footage. No wonder it looks so good, and has such interesting physics; apparently it's made by the team who created RagDoll Kung-Fu. More importantly, the implementation of user created "plots" into a youtube-esque searchable and filter-able database is bordering on brilliant. Yes, it's an idea appropriated from youtube, and from Miis, and from PC FPSs that have allowed user generated content for ages, but if Gears of War taught us anything, it's that clever recombination and refinement of previous concepts can equal an amazing experience. It's not worth 600 dollars, but again, fuck if it doesn't excite me.

this represents everything the PS3 hasn't been thus far, and innovation like this will make it the long-term investment that it's promised to be.

i don't see anything that can't be done by other consoles as well (except maybe the graphics for the wii) but still, looking at that video i couldn't tell that it was for a Sony box given the direction that it's had until today. i stand by the PS3 as being a future console, but it's just not here yet.

noneother

Killer App
OMG I NEED A PS3
My 360 is garbage next to this!

These aren't things you'll be hearing from me. Yes, it looks cute, yes it looks fun, but it also looks like it'd get old quick. I also have to wonder about pricing - they could price this game right out of my interest if they're not careful.

I will say that home looks quite interesting... as long as they don't follow in MS's footsteps w/ velocity girl and never deliver on all of the functionality they're promising

What The Geek

wow i am totally impressed with sony. In the past month or so, we've seen several analysts change their long term outlook on the PS3 to one of positivity and the possibility of it remaining #1. If this is the kind of stuff that they knew about, I would say that Sony knows what we want and is finally giving it to us. Cant wait to see what else is in store for the PS3 later this year.
Time to start saving.

MindKiller317

I like the idea of it, but how much fun could it be to do this without "consequences"? You know... enemies. Will it get boring? I am not trying to be the pessimist here, because I like plenty of pointless games, but a platformer needs something to squash/kill you. I'll definitely check it out because the idea is interesting, but I feel like I'm not as gung-ho as the rest of you.

Also, was it me or were some of those characters having a heckuva time doing the tasks? And I mean the ones as simple as jumping on the ball...

boywundr
