What this fails to mention:

"As part of the truce, Sony will pay San Jose-based Immersion $97.2 million in damages and interest, as stipulated in the original court award that Sony was appealing. Sony will also pay $22.5 million in licensing payments through 2009 plus an unspecified amount of fees and royalties.

In total, Sony will cough up at least $150.3 million to settle the litigation, when factoring in $30.6 million in compulsory license payments the Japanese company has already paid."

Sucks for the early adopters, but at least Sony is trying to incorporate consumer feedback into their decisions, so that's a plus. And that's the only reason they settled with Immersion - that lawsuit could've easily been tied up for years with appeals, Sony did this only because of the massive amount of complaints.

That said, if they do decide to go with a redesigned, rumble-enabled Sixaxis as a standard they should at least offer a discount on a new controller to the folks who were the first ones in the pool, e-mail a coupon to those who registered their hardware.

Didn't Microsoft buy a chunk of Immersion when they settled the original lawsuit?

Ninja20XX

I think it was pretty low that Immersion waited forever to sue Sony and Microsoft on the vibration function so they can ride on the success of the controllers. With so many game controllers out there already, companies would have to pay large sums of monies if they are sued.

Sony, then says well we don't need your vibration function because we got sixaxis and it's better. Immersion then piss in their pants because they're going to NOT make a lot of money on the ps3. I bet they're begging Sony to use them back.

So the sixaxis without vibration has to take place, before there is a sixaxis with vibration. Sony would not have Immersion bullying them around and extorting money from them. I can't blame Sony for standing up for themselvse on this even though I prefer the force feedback on some game.

So, Sony settlement with Immersion is taking place because Immersion probably back down when they realize they weren't going to benefit from Sony.

nxp3

Rumble is not force feedback, another tech that Immersion killed off with patent litigation. If Sony and Immersion made nice, maybe we can hope to see dual force feedback sticks? I'd much rather have true force feedback than "sixaxis". I especially find it is a boon to racing games. Being able to feel the forces acting on your car means that you can maximize the power you're putting on the road; you can feel the instant one of your tires begins to slip. Might require little buckles on the sticks similar to decent bicycle peddles, which would also be pretty cool because they'd enable you to pull on the stick as well as push it; R4 and L4! And if FF works on the new vertical axis... Whoo boy, I'm in!

Geekwad

@ Marasai

There hasn't even been an announcement regarding rumble back on the SIXAXIS, it could be that they will add force feedback to driving wheels for all we know.

Let's say that they do incluce rumble on the SIXAXIS again in the future, how would this render the older SIXAXIS controllers useless? Sure they won't have rumble, but they will offer the same functionality, not to mention the fact that the battery life will be longer than controllers with the rumble.

Sure, customers who want rumble will buy new controllers, but they are not obligated to, nobody is being forced to buy anything they don't want.

Microsoft did this as well, when they released a new and improved "S" version of their controller, after they already had several million customers purchase their console and more controllers.

Companies do this, it's called business. People should be glad Sony backed down from their arrogant stance and decided to listen to their customers, sooner rather than later.

The good thing is that now they will be able to use the newer force feedback technology immersion developed late last year. Which is good for the customer.

Death_Warrior

@Blinded220:

The funny thing about making stupid decisions is that they often come back to haunt you. It isn't my fault they dropped rumble. it isn't my fault that they refused to listen to consumer demands. It isn't my fault they decided to shaft the early adopters by rendering their 60 dollar controllers obsolete.

It's a giant fuck you to everyone who bought a ps3 since they are now forced to spend EVEN MORE money to get yet another feature that sony should have included form the start.

What, I should congratulate them? They let a milllion people or so purchase crippled controllers and no doubt expect them to pay the difference just like they did with the ps1. What is laudable about that? Settling with immersion is great., but they should have done it before people bought controllers thinking that they would last the life of the system, rather than 4 months.

So soryy, but in my book, Sony doens't get a medal for doing what they should have done months ago, and forcing the consumer to take it up the ass.

Marasai

You do not deserve to get controllers with rumble! They are too expensive for you.

Also, we're removing motion sensing from the European release of the PS3 and replacing it with spiders. They have eight legs, so it'll be the OCTATCO controller!

Please tell me where on earth does it say the SIXAXIS will get rumble from this article? People - Sony and Immersion settled up for past due money. They did not say that since all is good that they can now put rumble back in.

Yes they said they look forward to working with the company now, but that means almost nothing. Hell, it could mean something as minute as force feedback back in a Sony brand steering wheel - which if they didn't have FF it would have been crap.

Still... it is quite funny watching you guys jump to conclusions.

Roroco

Ah, but I disagree with that assessment. PR will always be PR -- lies, misleading lies, harmless lies, exaggerations. It's annoying, but when all is said and done, it's not important. What's important is how good the product is. In the end, this (if it pans out) is a positive for Sony, and a big one at that. This may make Sony looks like jackasses for a few months/weeks/days, but in the end it will net higher reviews for games and higher sales for Sony. I am as critical of Sony for their missteps, both technical and PR, but the proof is in the pudding, and this news (if it pans out) is good in those terms. Period.

RedRedSuit

TO: SONY

As we all know, there is a very high probability that you will be reading this as you have already Blackballed, and then changed your mind about Kotaku and shown them love once more for their great work. While your attention is here I just wanted to say, this was a great decision. You wanted to revolutionize with the SIXAXIS but the fact remains that rumble, even though it is an overlooked feature, is important to the gaming masses. Also, quit lying to us. It only makes you look more foolish, we love you but you are sinking your own ship. Thank you for your time.

I don't see anything wrong with them showing that they listen to consumer demand. Originally the 360 was only going to have a handful of backwards compatible titles until consumer demand showed that they wanted more than that, and now there are about 300.

The reason Sony can't win with this is not because we are determined to hate them no matter what.

It's because they claimed that the reason they didn't have rumble was because it was impossible to have motion sensing and rumble. We knew right away that this was false, and that it was about their Immersion lawsuit, because wii has rumble and motion sensing. But Sony PR, AS ALWAYS, goes for a lie.

The fact that they are now reversing their choice doesn't mean we should congratulate them. It just highlights the fact that their previous claim was a lie.

Here is a lesson for Sony: Good PR is not about telling lies. When you tell lies that are easily disproved, this is actually very bad PR. If you can't get the technology you want for your controller because of an ongoing lawsuit, a better PR angle would be:
"Our competitors decided to pay a large amount of money to Immersion to put rumble in their controllers, but we decided to save that money and pass the saving on to the customer"
or
"If we can make an agreement with the technology owner, we may see rumble reintroduced down the track"

"Furthermore, the business agreement between the two parties also provides SCE with "certain new rights with respect to Immersion's patent portfolio."

Translation: Sony has to pay the 91m they owed, from the PS2 suit, but gets to use Immersion's tech for a very nice deal from now on. That's all Sony wanted from the beginning, and it looks like Immersion finally believed they would drop their tech entirely from PS3 to prove their point. Sony strongarmed them and got the better of this, that's what it looks like to me.

Let's all be happy that rumble will be back, and relax a bit with the 'but now no games can count on rumble being in the controller!' stuff. Rumble provides nice feedback and in *very* few cases (MGS for example) was integral to the game experience-- but let's not equate this to not shipping a HD with every system...

Easy to add to new games and old with a patch, and it's entirely possible for people to play games that have rumble features without a rumble-capable controller. Hell, there will probably be a mod kit at some point-- if I remember correctly from a SIXAXIS dissection page there is just empty space where the solenoids used to be.

I swear, Sony are such babies.
They get into a lawsuit w/ Immersion and therefore "decide" to not include rumble feature in sixaxxis and load a bunch of crap on us about how it's not needed and how games are better without it and bla bla bla.

Now, the big bully made up with the class favorite and are proud to announce that they look forward to having rumble again?

Pathetic, even for Sony.
Man, you guys are caustic bastards. Let's assume for the moment rumble is coming back.

This means that Sony was wrong, they got some feedback about it, and decided to listen to that feedback. Yes, that means they were wrong before and didn't want to admit it (why would they?). But now they've changed their minds. This is a GOOD thing -- not a BAD thing. It means that they can implicitly admit they're wrong and do something about it. If our President could do the same, we might not be in that mess in the Middle East right now....

RedRedSuit

"Due to popular consumer demand, we have decided that it was time to reintroduce rumble features into our controllers. We don't feel like this contradicts our previous position, in fact, we think that by including the much-loved rumble feature back into our products, our SIXAXIS controller will truly be the best and most innovative next-gen player input device, with unparalleled player control and immersion.

At this time, we have not set a price point for our new Immersion SIXAXIS controllers, but they will be priced competitively and will be available soon."

i can't imagine them bringing rumble back.. its simply too late.
You can't make a game that requires the use of a specific peripheral, that wasn't included with the system...
This is why you saw so few games use the original analog ps1 controller, like Ape Escape. Developers had to assume the analog-less digital pad.

I imagine the reason Sony included a Hard Drive in every ps3, is because they didn't want to make the same mistake as the ps2's hard drive. (Obviously microsoft didn't agree, but this is partly why there are limits to XBLA game sizes).
Now, bringing out a controller that not everyone can be assumed to have is just bad...
Sure, some games its a bonus, such as a football game or something...
But what about a baseball game? Where you are 'feeling' the strike zone as a pitcher... Can't even make a game that is designed for it because you may cut out so many people...

I would have loved this from launch day... see what happens when you're stubborn?

darkslide

More Sony rumors!?

While adding rumble to the PS3 would make it more attractive in MY eyes, I really doubt it'll happen. I mean, what are they going to do with the people who've already bought PS3s? Oh wait, I guess it'll be the same thing that happened when PSX owners were introduced to the first DualShock. Which is... actually, what did happen?
Can anyone remind me what the transistion from the first Playstation controller to the DualShock was like? I remember that the only reason I ended up with a DualShock was because my PSX was stolen and I had to buy another one. At what point did games start using the analog sticks as a standard?

Brill

OMG!! The day has finally come... I just hope sony can change their tune fast enough to include rumble in Killzone.

The only bummer is that I know I'll have to go out and buy two more controllers if and when they release the dual shock 3(or whatever they decide to call it.

And I bet they wont be cheap either. It's already $59 Canadian for one sixaxis with no rumble..imagine with rumble. :-P

How would they go about getting controllers with rumble into gamer;s homes? Some sort of mass recall? "Send us your Sixaxis, and we'll send you a 'new and improved' Sixaxis with added rumble".

If they wanted to integrate it as a main feature into games, they can't force consumers to shell out for controllers, they should just replace them for gratis.

Nick_San
