I've read Mark Millar's "Wanted", and I couldn't really get into it through all the overused profanity. It looked like he was trying to be the next Ellis, only instead of relying on fleshed out characters with Bowel Disruptors he had one of the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade face-melted Nazi stand-ins get assassinated by creepy doll-like things wearing three-piece suits.

In addition to that, Civil War DID suck. I'm not saying that 52 and Countdown didn't have some crap moments, but I was yawning throughout the whole affair. The only real reedeming value it had for me was The Punisher's War Journal, though I may be looking through personal bias as I am a great fan of The Punisher, though he is always great. Even when he's trying to kill Spidey.

Now for the point at hand. I don't care if you think he was talking about games being for kids or for pedophiles, the way it came across in print was crap. It looks like it's intended to be offensive, and many people are going to take it that way. I've seen people try to do things like this to push their books, and chances are this is what he was trying to do. Aim for shock value and hope you get people pissed off enough to buy the book, even if just to get it to rip up.

I've seen some good things from Marvel. They have Moon Knight. They have Cable and Deadpool. Secret War was freaking lovely, and a beautiful use of Nick Fury. When it comes to things like Civil War and writers or artists throwing out insults, I like to leave it where it is and look for the good things that the company has to offer.

RPGZero hit the nail right on the head.

MM exercises a fair amount of humor in his interviews all the time from what I've seen, and this is either a case of misinterpretation or over-reaction of the written word. Misinterpretation if it was meant to just be a joke and people are believing that he seriously thinks games are for pedos. Over-reaction if people know it's a joke and are seriously that offended...it's a joke on the internet.

If you're that easily offended that he's made a joke about gaming (he's a comic writer, I'm sure he knows the humor abounding from the fact that he's joking about gaming), there are other things mere clicks away that can offend us all equally, I'm sure.

Then we could all get along.

Not surprised this came from a marvel writer. No wonder Dark Horse and DC's Vertigo comics are kicking Marvels butt in sales.
He writes for a company that went after NcSoft & Cryptic Studio's for allowing people to create Marvel like hero's in COH. Then they turn around last year and announce that they hired Cryptic Studio's to start on working on on of their own a Marvel Universe online game.
Anyway the written sucks and so did the whole civil war run . Just one more marvel screw up sense changing the whole Marvel Uni after the first Xmen Movie.

I actually read comic books, and i thought Civil War (which he wrote as mentioned) was amazing (i'm picking up the last copy today)

and he wrotes the Ultimates (like a much grittier and realistic take on The Avengers) which is by far one of the best books i've ever read (not that i've read much, but it's still amazing).

Either way, I think the guy's an amazing writer and I couldn't care less

Damn this commenting system, it just ate a post about how the remark reguarding the "A" on Captain America's cowl pointed to some rather fundamental differences between Captain America and Ultimate Captain America (boyscout-doesn't kill/guns people down-thinks parachutes are for pussies) and how I had read "Civil War" and it had pretty much started strong but delayed itself to death and imploded for the sake of setting up "The Initiative"...

Regarding Mark Millar, he's a bastard (self-admited) He talks all kinds of crap and writes about all kinds of messed up things. Sometimes he does say things just to piss people off. Heretrix: Totally agree, "Civil War" just imploded unto itself. It was going so good into #3 and #4 and those "Frontline" issues helped alot, but they just kept extending it and extending it and everything got thiner and thiner and they just keep padding it with "specials"...I know they're just trying to set up thier "The Initiative" story and the eventual war thats coming afterwards (possibly having to do with some Watcher stuff from "She-Hulk" a while back) but...I get what Captain America meant, but it was still a very lame way to go about it....it, it just sucked..

Sounds to me like he just has a bad opinion of games, and gamers, and chose an unorthodox "bad word" to describe them... like some people might say "comics are for fags"... they generally wouldn't actually mean that people who like comics are homosexuals (or cigarettes)... its just taking a descriptive group of people that he doesnt like, and comparing/applying it to another.

Oh come on, the ending to Civil War wasn't that bad. I liked it better than I would have liked the standard status-quo upholding ending that most story arcs have. I didn't like the outcome, but I didn't buy seven issues and a thousand tie-ins so that I could read an ending that was uninteresting or inconsequential.

I don't read comics very often, although my parents were both huge Marvel fans when I was a kid so I got healthy doses of X-Men and Fantastic Four and the like, I watch the movies (X-Men, Spidey, and the new Batman, at least). I also own several Marvel games.

But what I DON'T get is, why would Millar blast the game industry when it's one of the things keeping his medium alive? Games like Marvel Ultimate Alliance, X-Men Legends, the Spider-Man Movie Games, and the like help keep people as fans of Marvel even if they don't have the time or money to spend on monthly issues of comics. That should matter more to him than people's opinion on the latest "OMFG WE HAVE TO CHANGE EVERYTHING BECAUSE READERSHIP IS DOWN" blitz.

He, of all people, should know that gamers and comic book fans often go hand in hand, being part of the overall "nerd" umbrella. And because he SHOULD know that, I'm guessing he was just trying to be funny. Unfortunately, it just came out as a series of bitter-sounding "derp dee derp"s.

And since everyone is commenting on comics now, I'll give my own two cents. Civil War was good until the massive delays fucked up all continuity within the marvel universe, and then Millar wrote that cop-out ending just to get it on shelves in time. I hope to god that World War Hulk turns out much better since Planet Hulk is the best comic I've read in years.

He's joking. Having met him on a few occasions and seen him speak at panels, it's obvious that this is his typical sense of humor. It just doesn't come across too well when an interviewer doesn't not the tone of the comment or conversation.

Millar (not Miller, btw) comes off as an ass most of the time. I mean, I think he's funny, but he still comes off as an ass.

It did suck and I read it.

1. It was hastily thrown together because Marvel wanted a big event to offset DC's Crisis

2.The big delay. It completely destroyed the flow of the entire Marvel line. Not just creatively, but financially because they didn't want tie-in books (ie: EVERY Marvel comic) to ship before the Civil War books. Leading to:

3: It was a mess to read. It was next to impossible to tell what happened before what and those lazy bastards at Marvel didn't even attenpt to help you out with a simple editors note (This comic takes place before..) like they used to do.

4. The scale of the battles made everything seemed crammed into the book and it was extremely hard to tell what the hell was going on most of the time. The art was the best thing about the books though.

5. The end. WHAT THE FUCK. Added to the fact that the series made me hate Iron Man who used to be one of my favorites...I thought the idea of Iron Man and Cap going head to head would be cool, and it was, but the ending made the whole thing seem like a big waste.

Civil War was a decent series with kind of a letdown ending, but that's almost to be expected after the expectations were so high. You guys saying "it sucked" are either kneejerk reacting to this article, or you didn't read it to begin with.

His first love is comics, and _that_ was the point Millar was trying to get across. Speaking as someone with a half-assed knowledge of comics but enough of a passing interest in them, I've got to say that Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was about 10 times better at telling a story, fleshing out the characters and playing off their personalities than Civil War was.

At one time the comics industry was more aimed at children, just as at one time the video game industry was. It really isn't fair for members of either to slander the other, since they both have to deal with the same ridiculous stigma.

That said, Mr. Millar (and it is Millar, not Miller) has a certain way about him. I can almost guarantee he was joking about the pedo thing. After all, the whole pedo/child abduction "aspect" of games has been in the media a lot lately, as we have seen here on Kotaku.
