Chris Taylor was a stand up comedian? Wow, that's news to me, and he's one of my all time favourite developers (entirely because of Total Annihilation). My hard drive will always have a place for C:\Cavedog\Totala (the only installation folder I ever allow outside of "Program Files".

Adding humorous scenes to a game is all well and good (if it's done right), but I think it would be difficult to make a successful game where comedy is the entire focus.

I can only watch a comedy movie or listen to a stand-up comedian's set twice, maybe three times before it gets old and just isn't funny anymore. Unless the gameplay is incredibly solid and addictive in its own right, a "comedy game" probably wouldn't have much replay value. And if I need my fix, why would I pay $50 or $60 for a comedy game when I can pay $20 for a DVD, $10 for a movie ticket, or next to nothing to watch hours of sitcoms on television?

The only way I can see this working is with episodic content. Funny television shows are good because they present fresh material once a week. Cheap, funny games with only a few hours of gameplay might work.

I never played Gex 64 but I loved the original Gex on 3DO. I think the comedian was different for the original.

Last great comedy game I played was probably Psychonauts. I hope Tim Schafer makes another game with his studio - I haven't heard anything recently.

I'm all for this. Comedy game attempts are always good in my book.

Granted that there is even more potential to flop, if we get at least one or two titles this generation that are as noteworthy as Ron Gilbert's stuff it'll be worth it.

I can't say I'm thrilled at the prospect of a console-based comedy game.

Why not resurrect AMEN: The Awakening, which was a very slick FPS that was unfortunately cancelled in 2000 with the death of Cavedog

This is like artists that try to write. Most people are only really good at one thing, so they think "Hey, I can draw comics, let's write some", and they're always fucking awful.

I'm sure some game developers are an absolute hoot, but being funny and writing comedy are two entirely different things. Hell, Dave Chapelle could write the game and I bet it would still be awful.

What a bad idea.
